Hey No, Standing Still did not come out as a buyable single in the United States. It DID come out as a buyable single in Australia (where it made the best debut she's ever had on the single charts and is still rising!), New Zealand, and Japan. In the US, record companies rarely release CD-singles, because there isn't really a market for them anymore. Record companies would rather increase the first week of sales for an album, than have big sales for a buyable single. However, to increase Standing Still's chart presence on the Hot 100 they could release a buyable single perhaps a few weeks after the album has come out. But I doubt they'll do that. Clearly that wasn't evident... but that's what I meant. I know that commercial success and artistic success don't go hand in hand necessarily, but I know that This Way is an artistic success (or at least I think it is)... and I think it'd be great if it had commercial success. Personally, I like it when art (whether it be movies, music... whatever) that I think is "artistically successful" is also commercially successful, because it proves to me that people aren't as stupid and as lame as they so often appear to be. Jewel is an artist that has massive commercial and artistic appeal, in my opinion. It's comforting when at least SOME decent artists are doing well commercially, amongst all the shit. As far as the huge fanbase thing... this is what I mean - a few weeks ago Bob Dylan debuted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his new record, selling something like 400 000 copies I think. In 20 years, I want that to be Jewel. I have no idea how Bob Dylan got his fanbase, I wasn't alive then. It was probably from endless touring. All I know is that these days artists get exposure not so much from touring (although that definitely plays a part), but more from radio play. Sure radio gives you fans that'll stick with you six months and then move on... but it also produces people like me. I first began to like Jewel when I heard Hands on the radio. I thought it was catchy... I then saw her on some tv show and though t, "huh.. she can actually sing". So I bought her CD (Spirit) which I didn't really like. I saw another retrospective of music videos and live stuff on TV and went out and bought Pieces Of You, which showed potential.. but I didn't LOVE. Then I found an all-live import bootleg of a show in Sweden... it was like $40.. but I thought "what the hell".. and bought it. And from then on I LOVED Jewel, just because I was so captivated by her voice on that CD. So then I found more bootlegs, and more unreleased songs... and discovered that she was a better writer than I thought etc etc. If Jewel hadn't turned out to be such an interesting musician, in an artistic sense - I wouldn't be here. But she is. So based on my experience, I think that artistic success and commercial success CAN go hand in hand. Continue with your "damn the man, let's beat capitalism" ideals if you wish. I just don't see things that way. Steve > > > Since when does being successful mean selling the most copies possible? > > How many copies do you think Springsteen's Nebraska sold? OK you seem to be confused. That girl talked about Destiny's child being "black music," and my point was that you can't categorize music by the color of who is singing it. So to help me make that point I said I will go listen to my white music to show how utterly ridiculous it sounds. Obviously you didn't catch that. ~kris~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 11:41:36 EST From: AEmerald78@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel on Radio I caught the last few minutes of a Jewel interview being done this morning on KISSFM in Cleveland. I wish I would have caught the whole thing though. I didn't know she was gonna be on, let alone in Cleveland. I was hoping if she were going to be on a station around here I would have gotten the 411 from a JewelLink...so I don't know what happened there. Anyway onto the good I can share with you guys. The DJ asked her about Ty and if they were engaged and she said no and he said to call him up and let him talk to him and he'll hook it up. It was funny. So they continue talking about Ty cuz I think the other female DJ likes cowboys and the whole bull riding thing cuz she was talking about how she would see Ty on tv and they -the announcers- I guess would mention Jewel. So Jewel told a little funny story about going on a radio interview with Ty so he could talk about bullriding. Well, that DJ was a big Jewel fan and kept asking him questions about her instead. And Ty was ok with it but she wasn't so she was like this is supposed to be an interview about Bull Riding. So the DJ asks Ty (Jewel -imitating the DJ guy with a deeper voice) "So Ty...what's it like riding a bull in front of Jewel"? "So Ty...what was it like growing up in Arizona...before you met Jewel"? "So Ty... tell us something none of us know...about Jewel"? Ty's response..."Well when she eats Mexican food she farts a lot". Everyone's laughing and Jewel was like-- I could have killed him! It was too funny. Cute interview from what I caught and she really charmed the DJ's there I thought she was going to be on more but nope :-( At the end of the morning show they commented on how great she is.... There is also a nice pic up from a previous interview cuz it was there before at www.valshow.com enter the site and click under pictures-celebs. That's it I hope it all makes sense and you all get a chuckle.
