Subject: [EDA] I got it! I think I just discovered why I like Michelle Branch so much. It's because she *is* what I had wished for and hoped Jewel would be post PoY. I look at it this way. Take the numbers 1-10 with the following tags. (Folk/acoustic) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 (Edgy/Rock oriented) Jewel is mostly around the 1-5 range. With a touch of 6-8 at times on her heavier sounding songs...the ones I particularily like. Whereas Michelle is mostly around the 6-10 range, with a touch of 3-5 at times. So they do have some overlap depending on what songs are compared. She'll do a few solo acoustic songs sometimes, but the majority is heavier sounding songs. So it's like the Jewel I had always hoped for. I'm glad I posted about Sean.. because it got him to say something.. and whenever he does it's usually very intelligent, if not a little harsh. I was expecting him to absolutely BASH standing still... but thankfully, he didn't... I agree with sean in most of his comments. SS is very produced, very poppy and slightly cheesy in places.. but (and this is the 98th time i've said this).. it IS a pop song.. and it is the first single... and it's a damn good pop song. as for the drum machine thing.. as hard as it is to believe, apparently that's not a drum machine. Jewel was saying on a radio show recently that all of the songs are recorded live in the studio..... and rick dees said "but that sounded like a drum machine.." and she said no, it was live drums. so yeah.. secondly.. i'm SO glad somebody finally commented not only about michelle branch as that typical cross between cheesy teen pop and lilith-esque singer/songerwriters.. it's very true. i'm even MORE glad somebody pointed out the commercialism in these "funky" r&b singers.. they irritate the hell out of me. I HOPE that Jewel's next album is going to be more ambitious than Spirit. Spirit was, in a sense, ambitious because it put ideas out there that were so non-cynical and sincere.. and in a world drenched in irony that's quite daring.. but musically it was trash... I wouldn't write off This Way until it's out and we can hear it... I really like Til We Run Out of Road... let's just hope she's taking herself in new directions. Pieces of You isn't a great record.. but it is ambitious, that's for sure.... I have high hopes for This Way personally. As for Tori Amos, I love her take on Eminem's 97 Bonnie and Clyde... really eerie. And.. I just got back from a Bjork concert... and frankly, GENIUS. She's just so FUN!
