I personally think "drying" makes more sense than "trying". What does "trying my guts out for every dime" mean exactly? > And then: > > > Working in an office building tall > > You don't know who's next to you at all > > But being out here > > The blood, the guts, the beer > > Is a test > > Only time will tell > > It brings you close, man > > Closer than heaven > > > For the last line of this verse I think it's: > > - -Closer than hell I definitely disagree with this. At first I thought it was hell too... but then if you listen really really closely, I think you'll find it's heaven. I'm very positive of this, for two reasons. Firstly, heaven kind of rhymes with man... it's not a complete rhyme.. but one of those kind of half rhymes (i forget the technical name)... and this song is completely rhyming lyrically. The other reason is that she seems to be talking about something GOOD (ie - not working in a cubicle).. so I don't understand why she would then compare it to hell... heaven just makes more sense. > > > Expensive cabs and shitty food > > Washed down with cancelled flights > > This week endorsement holidays > > You miss your boy and I'm why > > Oh the late night drives, the calls > > ?Dawn? to strike you like a knife - this is just a hunch > > Hey man, this is a beautiful life > > > For the fourth line of this I've got: > > - -You miss your boy and wife That's totally possible as well! In fact I think that's probably right. You miss your boy and I'm why was just kind of an out of nowhere guess. > > And for the 6th I've got: > > - -The dawn to strike you like a knife > ok.. well that's pretty much the same. As for Standing Still, I'm almost positive it's "call" not "goal". I've listened to both the live version and the studio version closely and I'm 99% sure it's "call". Well.. i don't know about you guys.. but I've been waiting with baited breath for Sean Hooks to unleash his criticism upon Standing Still.. both the song and the video! Where are you Sean? We've already heard from Derrek.. but he thinks that Michelle Branch's "Everywhere" isn't a pop song.. so that discredits him... but I would actually like to hear what Sean has to say (sarcasm aside)... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Oct 2001 23:36:55 -0400 From: "Kelli Coppens" Subject: [EDA] Jewel not on CNN Just watched Larry King. Subject: [EDA] Larry King/Jewel I think the show with Jewel on it was taped, so they could air it anytime really. I'm sure someone will let everyone know once another date is confirmed. If it wasn't taped, then I have no idea. It would have to fit in with her schedule so who knows if it'll even happen then. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Oct 2001 04:23:47 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] SJC: Michelle's Show Well I just got home from an amazing time seeing Michelle Branch in Dallas. If anyone has a chance to see her in their area, DO so. You won't regret it. She was much better live than I even thought she'd be...and I was thinking it would sound pretty good. Very impressive. She was the first of 3 bands, and still played 10 songs...much to my surprise. I figured 7 would be the max. I noticed she came on about a 1/2 hour earlier though so maybe that's why. All but one of the songs she played are her best ones (at least to me)...I can't remember the last time I saw a band whose entire set was made up primarily of the artist's best songs. She was cranking one out after another. She played solo acoustic on one song, Goodbye to You, which was amazing. Her guitar looked alot like Big Blue also...I never noticed her playing that color of guitar before. The other songs were with the full band, with her playing a few solo parts during them. I think all but one song she was playing the guitar. The band had a really good sound...everything was mixed really well, especially for an outdoor show. It was one of the best sounding outdoor concerts I've been to. Before the show started I managed to get a photo to her that was taken of me and Steve P. on Bourbon St. a couple years ago....hehe. Remember that pic Amy? (I'll be writing you later by the way) ;-) She got a kick out of it, needless to say. For those who don't know, her first CD (the indie one) got it's title from a bracelet Steve gave to her a few years ago at a show. After her set, she came out to sign autographs and take pics...even though the staff said she wasn't going to. I hate people like that. Of course I knew better, and I think so did the other 100 or so fans waiting for her...haha. We made all the security people look pretty stupid. She took the time to sign every single person's item or items, pausing in between for a ton of pictures too. I have no idea how many photos she took, but it had to be around 40-50 I'd guess. It took at least 1/2 hour to sign everything. I can't remember the last time I witnessed an artist taking the time to do this for their fans at this stage in their career. I know some artists will sign things here and there of course, but not like this. We only talked a minute or so since she was so busy, but seeing her sign everything and her interaction with the fans was all I needed to see to understand the type of person she is. It was really refreshing to see that in this day when so many artists don't take time out like that. I've heard some rumors that Michelle wasn't that way, and wasn't very fan friendly, etc. Well, you SURE could have fooled me! I just witnessed a 1/2 hour of fan interaction. AND, she woke up at 4 in the morning to catch a flight for the show today, so I know she had to be completely exhausted...especially after playing her set as well. Oh yeah...I just heard a 45 minute set, and none of it sounded "pop" to me. :-) So I rest my case. I think certain people know what I'm talking about. This wasn't anything like a Britney or or even a Dido show. Those would be classified more as pop. This was an electric guitar (with a guy playing who looked like he just stepped out of a band such as Soundgarden or Alice in Chains), a bass guitar, keyboards, drums, and Michelle singing and playing acoustic. No synthesizers, drum machines, dubbed vocal tracks, or other abnormal sounds. Just your basic instrumentation. Much like what I heard when I saw Shannon Curfman play, who SURE isn't pop. Shannon has a bit more of a blues sound to her songs, but I think the instrumentation was identical in both bands. I'd compare it more to something like Juliana Hatfield or Liz Phair. Other than the one acoustic song. That one was more like something Jewel would do. It was a good blend though. So go check her out if you have the chance. It may be the last time you get to see her without having nosebleed seats...you never know. :-) Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 13:40:11 +0200 From: "Shachar Segal" Subject: Re: [EDA] Interesting article from Atlantic. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "jake skyles" To: Sent: Monday, October 08, 2001 1:56 AM Subject: [EDA] Interesting article from Atlantic. > short album in January tentatively titled "The Ladies Choice." If I were the praying kind I'd drop to my knees and pray marketing had a bad day and realized that the next day.Jewel has a lot of fans who are in their teens and whose parents pay for their disc purchases. One disc featuring "provocative, adult-oriented photo shoots" will see that disc and all subsequent ones peaking out in the 1,000,000th (sic) place on the Billboard sales charts. Maybe marketing wants her to vie for record sales with Cicciolina :). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 15:36:56 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: [EDA] Why Jewel wasn't featured in the Women Who Rock magazine I emailed in my complaint about Jewel not being featured in the 100 Women Who Rock magazine and I got the following reply... "In the event that we do a follow-up to the innagural Women Who Rock, we'll need a few names to put in the second issue. This is not to say that these women are second-rate musicians, but they just didn't "rock" as hard as the women in the first issue. The ability to rock is more of an attitude than a skill, and Jewel, while a fine musician, did not possess enough of the rocker girl aesthetic to make the first cut. Thanks for your email, and enjoy the mag!"
