I've just talked to a person from WEA, and he said that "This Way" will be released here in Brazil on November 13th!! Isn't it great!!! I told him that Jewel's website said that Latin America would only get the CD on 2002, but he told me that they prefered to antecipate it and release on Nov. 13! I'm so happy!!! Subject: [EDA] From Today's NY Times: In an article entitled "Listeners Ask Radio Stations for Songs That Sustain a Weary Soul," today's NY Times reports (in part): On top-40 stations, with a preponderance of young women among the listeners, requests are pouring in for Enrique Iglesias's "Hero," the song he performed on the benefit television show "A Tribute to America's Heroes," and for Jewel's "Hands," which promises comfort and help. "We were getting an average of 350 calls a week for Enrique and Jewel," said Paul Cubby Bryant, music director of WHTZ. "Those songs will be part of the format until they don't sound right anymore." Rhythm-and- blues listeners have been asking for Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 16:26:47 -0300 From: "FabioJJ" Subject: Re: [EDA] Radio Pics To see the pics of Jewel, go to http://www.104krbe.com/home.htm and then click on DOWNLOADS. I kind of like it... Its a good song, just very produced... > for some reason, I think I'd like it much better if it was acoustic. > Especially the chorus, when she goes, "we're leavin', leavin' again" > I totally disagree with this! I don't get this whole weird definition of "produced". Is Til We Run Out Of Road "produced" because it's played with a band? I guess so... but that doesn't make it VERY PRODUCED.. it just has instruments other than an acoustic guitar on it. Actually, in my opinion, this song would be highly inferior if it didn't have the band with it.. the instrumentation is SO effective. Jewel would not be able to rock out the way she does at the end if this were just with an acoustic guitar. Production for Jewel should be two things - a) not overpowering to her voice.. and b) effective and not over the top. This song completely brings out the versatility of her voice.. it's quiet when she sings girly and loud and rocky when she starts to get into that growling loud voice she does. And it's very simple. It has a lot of instruments and layers, but it doesn't have a lot of little producer effects - it's basically just Jewel singing with a band in the studio. It barely has any vocal harmonies! The only "effect" I can think of is a slight little vocal treatment during the bridge which is really effective. I think it's safe to say that the album is going to be Jewel with a band.... if this makes it "very produced".. well... i don't know.. that's not my definition of VERY produced. VERY produced is Alanis Morissette's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie... where by the end if she touches another little button on the mixing desk you wanna strangle her. I think those who yearn for a rehash of Pieces of You (where there are barley any instruments other than guitar) are going to be disapointed. But I don't think you should be.. Jewel has so much more in her than just "the girl with the guitar". Anyway.. enough of that... here's a positive review of Standing Still by Billboard: JEWEL ``Standing Still'' Atlantic Since her 1995 debut, Jewel has amassed worldwide sales of 23 million units - but will that buy her a cup of coffee in the eyes of programmers? Here in the post-Lilith era, about the only two female singer/songwriters garnering radio favor seem to be Dido and Nelly Furtado. The first single from Jewel's fourth album - ``This Way,'' due Nov. 13 - and the first since ``Jupiter (Swallow the Moon)'' grazed the charts more than two years ago, is a jaunty but sophisticated outing, rich in its evolving textures and guitar-fueled folk-pop base. The song certainly feels like a visit from an old friend, as Jewel weaves her voice from girly vulnerability - singing the chorus lines ``Do you love me like I love you/ Or am I standing still?'' - then soars with conviction as harmonies take the reins and carry her skyward. Jewel called in some powerful names for ``Standing Still,'' writing the song with Rick Knowles and producing it with Dan Huff (Faith Hill, Lonestar, Peter Cetera). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Oct 2001 20:09:54 From: "Matt Adler" Subject: [EDA] Standing Still Video! I don't have much to say at this point about the Standing Still video. I think it was just great! It really was a huge jump in direction compared to her other videos. Much less symbolic but still great none the less. One thing that I am extremely excited about is Blue in her backseat and at the performance! Seeing Blue really put a smile on my face. I can't wait to watch the video again! VOTE!!!!! I guess it is inevitable on a show like TRL that such discussion with Jewel might take on a sophomoric sexual inference, but it is just part of the life on a ranch. Castrating is the same as neutering any male animal. I believe it is done to not only prevent unwanted breeding, but also to bulk up the bull. It also adds significant value to the animal later (as does dehorning and other vet services). Just like you might do with your pet, it is the responsible thing to do on a ranch as well. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #444 ***************************
