Atlantic wouldn't waste their time (they are in it for money after all) if none of the songs had potential to be hits...and 'hit' in today's marketplace means 'pop'...of course that's just my observation of how things at present and i do feel things are changing just a bit (with p.o.d. being #1 on TRL for awhile...only to be knocked off by britney) at least hopefully they'll swing back a little bit...the music industry is cyclical (as is everything) after all. >because if people can't accept the truth, then that's too bad. > be careful what you consider 'the truth'...noone knows 'the truth'...you are speaking of your own 'personal truth'...do not feel bad for people who do not share your personal truth. >But to me, the song sounds more "poppier" than Miss Spears' new single. Of >course hers is very "produced" as Jewel's is, but it sounds less mainsteam not surprising...spears' latest single does not have a really good 'hook'...there's nothing wrong with having a lot of 'hooks' in your music...it keeps the song it in your head (which of course the record industry drools over). The britney single sounds less mainstream due to its lack of a 'hook'...it'll be interesting to see how britney does with this as her first single...Atlantic is probably thinking...'gee...a lot of people have probably forgotten about jewel...we better have a really 'hook laden' song so that they jump on the band wagon again, jewel becomes mainsteam again, and we can make more money!!' just my perceptions tom the 'cactus' angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 16:12:59 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Fritz Creek Store/This Way Hey Let's not forget that some of the songs recorded for Fritz Creek Store actually ended up on Spirit (eg Deep Water and Innocence Maintained). I think that when Jewel cancelled Fritz Creek Store it was because she didn't like the way the songs sounded.. not necessarily because she didn't like the content. If she didn't like those songs anymore she wouldn't have played them on the Spirit Tour consistently. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 15:18:46 -0500 From: "New World Warehouse" Subject: [EDA] pop and geminis Just to kinda brush on something a few of you have been talking about regarding some of the FCS tracks being put on This Way. Now, I don't put full stock into astrology and all that, so anyone wanting to complain about that, don't start. BUT, I do believe there are some scientific explanations for some of it. Either way, with that disclaimer out of the way, I know being a songwriter for awhile now (about 12 years), there have been many times that I felt a song, "just wasn't right" for me at one period of time and then a few years down the road I revisit it. One song I wrote when I was 19, didn't fit what I was doing with music then, but now I'm 26 and I'm performing it with my current band. Sometimes, I think we get ahead of ourselves. Regarding the astrology thing, I'm a gemini and so is she and geminis are notorious for changing our minds on a regular basis, so there. As for the pop discussion, The Beatles were considered pop (and still pretty much are), but very few people say it wasn't any good (some of it was, but as a whole it still beats most stuff out there). They still outsell most current artists. I think the goal of any songwriter is to make a song that reflects what you want to say or express and have people WANT to listen to it. If you can relay your message with a catchy beat to it, then great. The "bubble gum" pop stuff is the stuff that gives music a bad name. Most of the songs are the same reused lines and chords and are "formula written" by songwriters only to turn a buck. There's always seem to have been this thing with people that when something gets popular on the radio, they want to say its "uncool" or "too poppy". I like songs for the songs, regardless if they get radio play or not. If they are #1 on MTV great, if nobody's ever heard of them, cool....no biggie. If I'm not mistaken Jewel co-produced this with Dan Huff. So, I'm > thinking maybe this is not too far off from where Jewel considers herself to > be right now. Having used the term, myself, for quite a few years now (okay, maybe 12 years. Not forever, but longer than most of the people I hear using it now.), I can explain why it's a bad thing when *I* use it. A song that's produced is one that's ready to release. It's a product. That's cool with me. It means I'll soon be able to buy the cd. Production is the actions to make a product. That's obviously not a problem either, else we'd never get the cd. Some songs require very little production work, others are meticulously assembled structures of many individual components. "Overproduced" refers to having taken too many actions in the creation of the product. It can be a weak song that couldn't be made any better, as much of the big-label stuff is. It can be a very good song that gets lost in all the slicking up. It can be a live song that someone removed so much of the odd harmonics as to make it sound just like some poorly mixed studio song. The point is that there are a lot of ways that the productizing (producing) of the song can result in a recorded track that has nothing to do with what would fit the song. It's about lost potential, or the attempt to disguise the lack of potential. You could also have a song that's "underproduced," meaning there's clearly some potential there, but someone failed to bring out the final bits to really make it great (or at least better than it is). This could be as simple as the left and right channels not being balanced, to needing one of the instruments to be redone, because the original recording failed to capture it (due to bad mic placement, or wind, or something, for example), etc... So anyway, the point is that songs, like wine, are a balance of different essences. Some have relatively few, others are very complex. Either way, the goal is to create a balanced mix. Overemphasize some, and they dominate the whole and take away from other parts. Allow others to disappear into the noise, and the whole is lessened. You need to start off with some critical juice (lyrics, melody, rhythm), but how you assemble them can make all the difference in the world. The masters are those who can recognize *just the right ammount* of work to do. The song has consistently been the most added song to Adult Top 40 and Modern Adult Radio for the past few days. So far it's added at about 20-25 stations in each format (although there is some overlap between the two formats). It's also doing well in mainstream radio. It's been officially added at 44 mainstream top 40 radio stations (out of a total of around 150 across the country) this week (which is the 6th best this week behind Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias, Britney, Mary J. Blige and Lenny Kravitz). The song should continue to be added over the next couple of weeks, and we should start seeing it appear on the Billboard Hot 100 pretty soon. If she releases a CD-single this song might even make it to #1. But even if it doesn't all indications are that this is going to be a major radio hit. Don't forget, radio stations no longer consider Jewel a "core artist" because she's been away for so long, and the last few singles off spirit were failures. She has to prove herself, and it seems like she's doing just that. Just out of interest, here are a few quotes from radio programmers across the country who have added the song. MARK THOMAS, PD, KMHX, Santa Rosa"This is a breath of fresh air!" DYLAN, APD/MD, KMXV, Kansas City"She played our show this summer and the audience is still enamored with her. That kind of vibe coupled with how good this song is make this a natural for us!" JON ZELLNER, OM/PD, KMXV, Kansas City"It's good to have her back and I love the way this sounds on MIX93.3!" TOMMY FRANK, PD, Q102, Cincinnati"I was skeptical before I heard this, but it's got tempo and a great hook, so it could be a big smash!" J.T. BOSCH, PD, WKSI, Greensboro-Winston Salem"This really is an incredible song!" STEVE SMITH, PD, WMGI, Terre Haute"This sounds like she's back! Perfect timing for this song." JOHN REYNOLDS, PD, WNKS, Charlotte"This is a great record! It's wonderful to hear her come back with something this strong!" JEANNINE JERSEY, APD/MD, WTIC-FM, Hartford"This is hot!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 22:16:23 EDT From: Cember76@aol.com Subject: [EDA] njc p.o.d.
