Loved the performance! It's the first I've seen of her in a while now and made me look forward to 'This Way' even more. I agree with the person who made the comment about her necklace and belt buckle, CUTE!!! They were obviously running out of time. I thought the performance was great. DON'T OVERANALYZE THINGS. She sang- it was great and the tempo was probably slower to emphasize the lyrics. TRL was great too. So intimate and wonderful. ~Rachel~ PS- Alisa-- I completely agree with what you said ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:18:50 -0400 From: casper31@juno.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel in Michigan and Radio Tour Hey Does anyone know if it is just going to be a broadcast from somewhere else or is Jewel actually going to be in Michigan to do the radio interviews and performances? I personally didn't expect him to interview her. A few days ago Tori Amos was on and she didn't get interviewed either. But her new CD was plugged I guess that was because it came out that day. Maybe Jewel and her people don't want to plug her new CD just yet. In light of all the recent events I think it is very smart that she is not promoting it so soon. And considering that it doesn't release until Nov. It makes sense to me. December. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:54:32 EDT From: Cember76@aol.com Subject: [EDA] trl west coast Has it aired here on the west coast yet. As far as Jewel singing Hands on TV rather than any new material, I think it is the right thing to do. Of course like the rest of the EDAs I would love to see and hear the highly awaited new material. However in lieu of the recent tragedy Hands is the more fitting choice. Whether or not you may like this particular song is kind of irrelevent. It has proven to be comforting to those deeply affected by the events. I think that it is rather selfish of us to demand new material simply because we want to hear it. Instead I think we should be grateful to see Jewel and I am personally touched that she cares so deeply. It may only be a song, but if it even helps just one person during this horrific time, then it is definitely worth it. Of course this is just my opinion. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:23:09 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] Jewel is the greatest!!! The list is continually growing more ignorant as the days go on. People who think they know other people, people who think they have more in common with Jewel than other people, etc. I've never understood why people send personal attacks to others via the list, when they're fully capable of sending a letter privately. In light of the recent personal attacks made though, all I wanted to say is that I feel very sorry for the person who made them...as she must be going through a very difficult time in her life. The emotion shown by her words were overwhelming. I hope things improve for her. Regarding people saying they share things with Jewel, know Jewel, etc....all I really have to say about that is that about 95% of this list has no clue who Jewel really is. You may think you know her...you don't. You may think you have alot in common with her, you don't. If you really want to know who Jewel is, then find out from someone who really DOES know her, and ask them how she REALLY is. I know alot of hearts will be broken, and many of you simply won't believe what you hear, no matter what, since your mind is already made up. You have put Jewel above almost everyone else in your life, and no matter what anyone says about her, you will always worship her. And that's fine, if that's the choice you've made. But don't go knocking other people's opinions about her simply because they don't agree with your own, and that may contain somewhat negative comments. I will say this...I truly believe Jewel isn't a bad person at heart. She isn't extremely mean. And she does do alot of good for some people, and organizations...or at least the money she's made does. However, on more of a personal level, she isn't what I bet most of you think she is. I really can't say much more but if you'd like more details, then just e-mail me *privately* (as in, not to the list), and I'd be happy to tell you. And, I honestly expect a few flames from some people, the same ones who always do, and the same ones I've long ago figured out. So go ahead and do it...I know you can't resist that anyway. But for those who actually will spend the time to think for a second and realize that what alot of people are saying about her (negatively) just may have some truth to it, well, you guys will be far ahead of the others. Open minds are wonderful. Unfortunately, this list has very few. Ok, your turn. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 18:33:03 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Letterman opportunity SQUANDERED Hey Just thought I would respond to some of this email. First of all, we all know that Jewel was asked to come on Letterman and sing Hands, because Hands has been played a lot on the radio in New York lately due to the tragedy that has occurred. The song isn't THAT bad. It's not her best song, but it's strength is that it's very sincere... and free of cynicism, which is important at this time. I also think that you have completely misinterpreted the way she refers to God in the song... I think her intention when she says "we are that to which we pray" is very much the same as when she says "we are gods hands".... maybe the first line can be interpreted as being "deeper" because it's a little more complicated... but she's basically saying the same thing. Secondly - I guarantee that you, Sean, will HATE Standing Still. It's a pop song if there ever was one. The lyrics, in my opinion, are clever (in places.. in other places they're pretty simple).. but the song isn't supposed to be serious, it's supposed to be upbeat and fun.. with little substance. That's why it's on the radio. I prefer the song to Hands because there's less programming and it seems more like just a band.. but it is a pop song most definitely. Not that that's a bad thing.. it's certainly what pop SHOULD be (as opposed to Britney Spears and NSYNC). Another album song - "I Won't Walk Away" is also kind of a pop song.... I can see that as being another single. It's a ballad, kind of etheral.. kind of a mix between Sarah McLachlan and Dido... it's nice, but it's not particularly deep either. I doubt any of the old school jewel fans will like that. Serve the Ego, I didn't particularly like when I heard it on Letterman. However, in it's new incarnation it's actually very good. She's added heavy bass and electric guitar, and kind of taken out the "middle eastern theme", and just left it as a kind of rock song in a minor key. The lyrics, to me, are actually quite effective. When I first heard the song I didn't like the lyrics because i associated them with Jewel trying to take some Indian bent... but the new version is very different from that. Break Me.. well.. I don't know how I can argue on that one. It's a pretty love song. I take songs (and movies.. and art in general) in the vein that they were intended... I think Break Me is a nice song.. it reminds me of songs like Near you Always and Enter from the East kind of.... and Kiss The Flame (although I think it's better than Kiss the Flame).... just a sweet love song. There are, however, three songs that I think you (and all the other old-school Jewel fans) will probably like very much. One is "A Long Slow Slide" which has very interesting lyrics, another is "Jesus Loves You" which has great lyrics.., and the final is The New Wild West... which is kind of along the lines of Life Uncommon in theme, but much better lyrically and more political. To read the lyrics go to Scott's Planet Jewel website (jewel.tanweb.com)... he has them all posted. I guess all I'm saying is, don't give up on the album yet. We barely know what's on it... all we know is that she feels it's more raw and less produced than Spirit was.... and we've heard one song in it's album version.. Standing Still... which is obviously the most mainstream as it's the first single. Oh, and I doubt that thing on Amazon is actually the cover. The cover probably isn't even finished... from what I've heard there were like five supposed covers when Spirit came out.. so I don't think that is definite. If it is I'd say I'm pretty dissapointed with the cover as well.... but I don't think it is. IT's probably just a temporary thing that they send with promotional copies for critics and whatnot. We'll see... Oh.. and with Love Me Just Leave Me Alone.. she said she's cleaned up the drums, tried to find a way to fit a lot of verses into the song properly (ie - -without cutting verses, because she likes it having a lot of verses - classic Dylan style), and added a pedal guitar part in the first verse. later Steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:32:49 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] One example As an example (referencing by previous post)...Steve Poltz would qualify as someone who really knows Jewel. So if you aren't Steve, or someone of similar "closeness" to Jewel, then you really can't say you *know* her. Some of her former bandmates I doubt even know her. Sure they know things about her better than most on this list do I'm sure, but I bet they don't know everything about her. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 18:46:33 EDT From: Fabsurfgrl@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] letterman Alisa, Speaking of lack of intelligent, caring people on this list, I do believe you took the cake there, darling. I find this message quite hypocritical in many senses, and much to my normal behavior, have to respond. First and foremost, I don't care if you're an artist, or the CTO of Microsoft - you cannot say that you "know" Jewel, or anyone else for that matter, (aside from perhaps friends and family members) any better than the other guy. You may think you have some "deep understanding" or "connection" with Jewel because she's an artist, but I assure you that you are sadly mistaken. I've said this many, many times before, but PR has much to do with who you think Jewel is. As for people needing to "keep negative remarks to themselves" have YOU learned nothing? For as much as Miss Jewel professes love and peace, she also professes the need for people to have freedome of discussion and expression. And yes, my dear, that even means comments, remarks, and opinions that may very well seem contrary to yours, and to their own existence on a list that is, in your eyes, very specifically supposed to be for dire fans only. Do you honestly think you were some sort of psychic, or had some sort of advanced connection with Jewel because you found a very obvious song "fitting" for a tragedy? That seems not only very egotistical, but also quite odd. And, I would like, as I'm sure many on this list would, for you to offer your definition of "Jewel fan" for our clarification since you seem to be the one to dictate who is and who isn't indeed "a fan." Nice comments, tone and intonation in your reply to Derrick specifically.Very angel-like indeed. Mind you, I have no problem with people being mean, or angry, or even unangelic, but I do have a problem with those that write a long excerpt telling others to be nice, then say "fucking hypocrite" to people. OH, and in regard to your ideal that you think you've heard more "old Jewel" than anyone, I assure you, you are quite mistaken. I for one, was friends with her before she was ever famous, and before her first performance at the Innerchange. So, since you appear to be into this "tit for tat" BS, I'll throw that into your mix. And again, you are simply sounding foolish with all of your "I know her better" nonsense. It really isn't helping your cause. You have every right to be upset, everyone does. So, you should take some time to read what you are saying and see your own hypocrisy in your statements. Why do you REALLY have issue with someone discussing Jewel's belt? Or her hair, or shoes? Dig deep inside your psche and find out why that bothers you so. You may just learn something. Finally, remember, freedom of discussion, even your ranting, is a good thing, for all.
