They were talking about 'Hands' and asked her to tell them a few lines from it...she goes "Let me remember them...umm" haha she never remembers her song lyrics!! Anyway they then talked a little about that and then how everyone was helping out...it was good to hear her on radio again. I can't wait for Letterman tonight. "Musically, I think we are in a comfort-food zone," says Tom Calderone, senior vice president for MTV and MTV2. "People are gravitating to artists and songs that make them feel secure. We at the channel have been digging deeper into our library over the past week, playing things like Bob Marley and old U2 and Wyclef Jean." Upcoming albums from Suzanne Vega (Songs in Red and Gray, Tuesday), Elton John (Songs From the West Coast, Oct. 2), and Jewel (This Way, Nov. 13) could take the spotlight as listeners desire the soft and sensitive over the hard and hurtful.>>>>> Also, page 2D, the page where the mention of Jewel occurs, there is a gorgeous picture of her with her hair back and she's sitting on a couch with her chin resting on the armrest, it's a close-up of her face. I was hoping > for Standing Still maybe, but now I'm not so sure. I guess I'll get the VCR > ready just in case, but might end up recording my 10th or 11th "network" > performance of Hands. Ugh. She's playing Hands because she doesn't wanna seem like she's going around plugging her new single when this tragedy happened just over a week ago. Hands, which of course it isn't her best song, is a very appropriate song lyrically right now. Basically all the TV shows (such as Letterman, Tonight Show and even TRL) are trying to feature content that is relevant and sensitive to this situation, as opposed to just celebrities plugging their latest projects. Jewel will obviously do the talk show circuit in a MAJOR way (she always does.. even with Joy she did a ton of TV appearances) in October and November when the album comes out, but now she is being asked to give these performances that are slightly more relevant to the event. From a promotional standpoint it will only help her get back into the public eye in the coming months.. but that's not the real issue.. the issue is that she's playing hands not because she's PROMOTING it, but because it's a relevant song right now.. which I think is great. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 20:47:46 EDT From: JeWeLzKeWL@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel on Drugs?? I just wanted to reply to this post as well as the list: I think it is very possible that jewels managers or record co. or whoever they are might be nervous. Yes, Aerosmith did not have an album for many years; but that was in the '80s, a very different time then. I dont know about Poe.. But that was 5 years ago and in the music media buisness, trends change the times quicker than you think. We are living in a terrible time of mindless pop culture. Britney, Christina, N-sync, even that girlie band (thats not really a talented band in my opinion) called that was on pop stars... i cant think of the name.... Eve something... well anyway these groups are throwing out hits left and right which puts a lot of pressure of real muscicians like Jewel. The trick is, these "non-artists" dont even write their own songs! Heck, most of them like Britney and Eve whatever dont even sing... its all fake! So of course its easier for them to pump out hits because all they have to do is starve themselves and get their nails done. Jewel should be okay whatever happens. She is real. Real artists like Bob Marley or John Denver live on. She can afford to release a cd without a label right?? Well, i dont know if there are legal stuff with that but whatever. She will still write songs and poetry probably for the rest of her life. Being on the Jewel list i am sure we can count on always having a connection with her. I don't know about Spirit, but she's made a lot of money for her record company. And, it's only been 2 years since her last album. Some artists take twice that. Poe didn't have an album out for almost 5 years when she finally released Haunted. In the 80's, when Aerosmith was super-druggy, they didn't release an album for almost 10 years. If I was Jewel and they did boot me out, I would say good riddance and find a company that respected me more... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 22:14:01 -0400 From: "Kelli Coppens" Subject: [EDA] Re: South vs. North Just adding into the convo about radio stations in south vs. north. I live in the west now (Utah) so i thought i would add. Before moving here from north jersey area i thought for sure i would be surrounded by country music and none other! Much to my surprise, Salt Lake City has at least a dozen (yes,12)great radio stations that feature rock/alternative/pop. One other thing thats interesting... there are almost no black people in this city yet there are quite a few rap stations. (I dont listen to rap and i am not saying that only black people do but the majority does) So there ya go. Although so far i have not heard "This Way" yet. Maybe i should try to request it... I have to say that people may have their personal reasons for why a certain song is special to them, like Gina and her sister. I dont remember which songs in particular for my case but i have a reason why Jewels music and this list is special to me. Two years ago i attempted to committ suicide. But i wimped out. Instead i dropped the knife along with my body to the kitchen floor and cried all night until i fell asleep. When i woke up i was laying next to my stereo (on the floor) and a jewel cd (i think POY). I played it and her words made me feel there was hope and everything will be okay. She inspired me to write poetry and this I believe is what saved my life. Since then i have only had positive people (well okay there is one exception - he he he) in my life. About a week later maybe less is when i found Jewel.org and joined. Thats my story [IMAGE] KelliUtah angel I think that is totally not correct. If your life revolves that much around a song, professional help may be of some assistance to you. My favorite Jewel song is "Angel Standing By," because I used to sing it to my little sister who died of cancer. But if someone came on the list and said "Hey guys...ASB really blows chunks. I think it is the worst piece of song writing I've ever seen," I may not agree with them but I certainly wouldn't say it destroyed or insulted me personally. Opinions are just what other people think. Just because my best friend hates the color green, doesn't mean I'm offended because it is my favorite color. Don't let people's opinions bring you down over such trivial matters as to who likes what song. It's just not worth it, as many of us can attest to. I CANT WAIT! i think jewel is being really smart about what she is playing on tv right now, i mean the single isnt even out yet in most of the world. and we all know that jewel only sings what she feels like singing..... ex. mtv music awards when she sang angel standing by instead of foolish games!! jewel will be jewel and i love her for it!! being a singer myself i know what she feels like. as for the this way cover.... i know and am very good at cd cover art in photoshop and some of the covers i have done for jewel in my computer class have been increadibly more interesting than the one i saw... but jewel of course looked wonderful..... but i am possibly going into advertising and i am taking marketing right now.. and the format for the cd cover is completely off... you should really never put the singers name and the title of the cd on the "same line"... in advertising the proper way to do it is called a z format or something to that effect.... you see it in magazines all the time.... one word, for example jewels name, in the top corner and it ends near her face.. so the viewers eye goes right to jewel and looks down to see anything special about her, which leads their eye to the name of the cd at the opposite bottom corner.... it always works and it makes the consumers eyes move around and stay interested. anyway.... if the j-team is looking for someone to design jewel merchandise..... ILL DO IT!! anyway, im done but i still LOVE the cover... jewel looks awsome! now and zen girl - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #420 ***************************
