The women I baby-sit for called me yesterday. She is in Orlando, Florida right now with my dad. Her husband Tracy, and her two kids are staying here in TN to sell the house. Anyway she called me and said that a few days ago the office building she works in, which is a communications building, was broken into. The people who broke into and they racked up over 11,000 min in Phone calls to foreign countries like Ahfganistan. She said the FBI came in there yesterday with search warrants, and they listened to all the Voice mailbox' of employees there, and there was a 45 min voice mail left on one of the voice box' in Arabic. They also took all the companies lock box keys to search. She called me this morning, and said that the FBI was still there. This needs to stay within the confines of the Eda's. They are also looking for two cars with Florida plates right now too. Tina is supposed to call me tonight, and let me know if their search has led anywhere. Unambiguous war, that is. Until now, the shadowy thugs who engineered so much death and destruction--in New York City, in Washington, and elsewhere--were playing for small stakes. There was the first World Trade Center bombing, of course. And plenty of evidence that terrorists for years have been targeting America in such relatively small-scale ways. There was the murder of U.S. servicemen in Saudi Arabia--at Khobar Towers, and before that in Bahrain. Then, last year, there was the USS Cole in Yemen. In each instance, the casualties were relatively light, the destruction relatively limited--and the origins of the attack shrouded in mystery. Now, of course, the butcher's bill is staggering and the destruction appalling. But, as ever, it is unclear just where responsibility resides. And now New York--indeed, America--is wondering: What NEXT? Who NEXT? What can be done both to prevent a recurrance, and to extract a measure of justice for this appalling attack. Actually, justice has little to do with what happened yesterday. It was an act of war--asymmetrical war, the experts call it, pitting small bands of dedicated professionals against a mighty nation with the intent of sapping the target's will to defend its legitimate political, economic and military interests. Heretofore, America's response to terrorism largely has been: 1) Legalistic, in the case of the first WTC attack: Indictments were handed up, prosecutions undertaken, convictions gained and long sentences imposed--on a handful of foot-soldiers. 2)Rhetorical, in the cases of Khobar Towers and USS Cole: America talked loudly and wielded a very small stick; that is, nobody has paid ANY sort of price. Those behind yesterday's atrocity thought they could get away with it--because they heretofore HAVE gotten away with it. Random terror is, indeed, difficult to defend against. America is a big target, after all. But it doesn't need to be difficult to RESPOND to terror. America needs to gather the will to turn political terror's principle ingredient--randomness itself--AGAINST the terrorist. It may not be clear precisely who is behind yesterday's attack. But America's intelligence community surely knows--in a very general sense--who is capable of pulling it off: motive, capability and will are clear enough. To HELL with the Clinton administration's "let's gather the evidence and proceed in court approach." It's time for a random application of AMERICAN power--tangible attacks on targets of opportunity. And that's just for starters, The day after the LAST date fated to live in infamy, the president of the United States went before Congress and made it clear that the war just begun would be ended on America's terms. Then, sunken battleships were belching smoke at Pearl Harbor. Today, the World Trade Center lies in ruins and the Pentagon smolders. Nothing less than unconditional victory was acceptable six decades ago. My last outstanding friend called 10 minutes ago. He's a firefighter in Williamsburg, Bklyn and was not on duty when the call came in about the WTC. He went in as the first building collapsed, but was not close enough to suffer any severe injuries. He worked all yesterday, and throughout the day today, clearing rubble, and getting people to trioge centers, and hospitals. He's going back tomorrow to help out. So, please do, continue to hold him, his coworkers, and their families in your prayers. One of his good buddies lost his entire ladder company (Chelsea). Keep those cell phone lines open, and continue to call your loved ones if you have not heard from them. If anybody else is missing a firefighter, please call this phone number. Ennosigee is believed to be a distortion of a Greek word meaning "earth-shaker". Aretuse is believed to be a distortion of the greek nympth "arethusa" who was transformed into a stream. People are trying to put "two great rocks will war on each other" as the twin towers, but to me, this one can't be parralled with yesterdays disaster. "Earth shaker" is reminsent of an earthquake, and "fire from the centre of the earth" sounds like a volcano (add the earth shaker part to that, and it makes sense, since the earth shakes when a volcano erupts). The "two great rocks" sound to me like two strong countries. But I love that city. When I was kid I saw a big huge ant hill. I kicked it - I don't know why, I just did. I stopped and watched as the ants all scrambled about all confused. Then they organized and went back to work, rebuilding and living. They're ants - that's what ants do. The next day the mound was back. This tragedy is just too much for me to understand, rationalize, explain or comprehend. I just hum the star-spangled banner, realize the "flag is still there" and go back being who I am. I am sad for the senseless death of anyone, but I am not scared or worried or hateful.
