That is completely different from war. This is the act of a terrorist group (inside or outside of the US - assuming that they're from the middle east is stupid, because as of now there's no proof that that is true, although it is definitely a possibility). When we find out which terrorist group, and all the facts are uncovered, the US will most definitely go to the extremes to bring those people to justice - which is completely justified, seeing as though it looks as if 10's of thousands (or even 100's of thousands) of people have been killed. However, that doesn't make this war. I live in NJ right by NYC. I first heard the news in Spanish where we were asked to pray for all the victims. Then we watched everything on TV and it was the most horrible thing. Everyday on my way to school I see the World Trade Center along with the rest of the skyline. Then I got worried, cause my Dad was coming home from Japan on United Airlines..and I started crying cause i had no clue if his plane was hijacked. He was on his way to New York City and then he was gonna drive home. People in my homeroom were crying and 5 girls go "My Dad works there!" and I felt so bad. We all went to the offices to call. Luckily, all the people that I'm friends with, their parents got out just in time. But there are other people in my school that probably weren't too lucky. On my way home I looked at the skyline and just saw smoke..and i was so scared. Then when I got home there was a HUGE puff of smoke in the sky. Just about a half hour ago, my Dad called. He landed in Canada and had no clue what was going on. I told him the horrible news and he was just so shocked. I'm so scared right now. I know that my life won't ever be the same. I hope that all of the EDA's and their families are okay. I will continue to pray. Thousands dead, the entire airspace shutdown, potential world market crash. Why does such hatred still exist in the world? If this action came from the Middle East, will we see Desert Storm 2? Somebody is going to pay big time for this. My thoughts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. Sorry if I'm rambling, but it's 1:20am here in Australia and I was just about to head off to bed at midnight when I picked up on the news story. No way can I get to sleep now. Just after midnight I was speaking to a mate who lives in northern Australia (Darwin) and he said that the 5000 sailors who were in port there were literally running through the streets to get back to the ship. I will gladly offer sources for anything in my post, so feel free to ask me to defend my views... I do not know if Sandy really read my post. I did not say that we were at war. I said (or wrote rather) "Act Of War". No, an act of war does not constitute "war". Here is the legal definition: ACT OF WAR - any act occurring in the course of declared war; armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or armed conflict between military forces of any origin. 18 U.S.C. I think we can safely call most terrorist groups a "military force" despite not being raised by any one government. The pentagon building is the headquarters of our "military force." To further state my case, here is part of the War Powers Act of 1973: SEC. 2. (c) The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces. The third entry more than covers today's events... and make no mistake, today was an attack. An example is that by law the president of the US can order US troops into combat for up to 90 days without getting congress to declare war. People attack each other, people die, but still is not a "legal" war. Korea was a "police action" Vietnam was consider one as well. The NATO troops (US soldiers included) that have been hurt, killed, detained in and around of what used to be Yugoslavia have done so while on a "peacekeeping mission." We sent Troops into Panama to get Noragia (sp?) for mainly drugs. That was not a war, but a few people died. None of the things I have mentioned are truly wars by your standard, but they were all Acts of War. I am sorry to make such a big deal of seemingly a small point, but no where in my post did I say that "I' or "we" are at war.As for misunderstanding the 'let shit happen' comment, and "there is nothing you can personally do about this horror, so just let shit happen and let the people who can deal with it"... Well, I truly think that everyone is capable of doing something to help, no matter how small. Now, if you had read my first post you would have seen I do not expect people to pick up torches and pitchforks to rush off after some unseen monster. There are things we can do, need to do. Yes, I understand that you were speaking about letting other people handle retribution of this act of war. Where the 'everyday joe' can help with that is writing his government, congressman to let him/her know how the 'everyday joe' feels, of what he/she wants done. We have anti-drug rallies, why not anti-terrorism rallies? (though I think there have been some). There are things we CAN do.Once again, I am sorry for the flame style post that has often plagued this list, but I feel strongly about this, and do not want to be misunderstood.RowdyPS as for people rushing to get supplies... I do live in a more rural area, but I have seen none of that, and of the people I have talked to, across the country things have been quite calm, all things considered... People should be prepared for emergencies of all type. A reserve of food and such things would be easy for most people to maintain (I'm not talking freeze dried crap) if they wanted. But most people have that "it can't/won't happen to me" attitude. I am not on my puter at the time, but I will post about how people can be prepared for things in further detail later. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #393 ***************************
