Main reason is, it catches people's attention and makes them want to go buy the album. The "established" fans who love the more "serious" stuff are gonna buy the album anyway. Basically, once the first few "new" fans are gotten, then they tend to release more serious stuff for those who aren't as easily sucked in....YWMFM really made POY famous, but it's not nearly as deep and melodic as Angel Standing By or Amen, but that would tend to scare some people off if they heard it on the radio. Hands was definitely not the strongest song on the Spirit, but Barcelona, wouldn't have done too well either (although Spirit in general is much more "radio ready" than POY). Any good artist/songwriter will usually write a couple of poppy tunes in order to round out their sound and grab as many fans as possible. It's the artists that do ALL poppy stuff (i.e. Britney Spears) that tend to annoy people after awhile. I don't think poppy is bad...sometimes I prefer something with a good "hook" in it and sometimes it bugs the crap out of me....but it's good that I can get either from any Jewel album. Now you can see the EDA pics, pics of Jewel after the show (courtesy of EDA Angela...thanks again) which I have tried to touch up a bit to try and bring out some details, and a pathetic little sketch for those of you who wanted to know what the interior layout looked like. You enter through a small restaurant/bar with a dozen tables or so and proceed through a side doorway into the concert room. This comfortably seats approx 160 people (in rows of chairs) with room for another 40 or so upstairs in a small balcony. The room is shaped somewhat like an L with one side running along the length of the stage and the other side running along a wall length bar. (They closed the restaurant and bar for the night.) For comparison, the concert room is approximately the overall size af Java Joes in San Diego and for an east coast reference, about the size of The Iron Horse in Northampton. (And for an Amsterdam reference--about 2/3 the size of The Melkweg. ;-) It was quite small with no bad seats and they have a really nice installed PA system suspended above the stage so it blocks nobody's veiw. An extremely nice equipment setup for such an intimate venue. It's obviously prepared to rock in there! The stage was a small riser about a foot off the ground. At the front of the stage I think we had four or five rows of twenty people and then continuing rows out into the back of the room. Around the perimeter of the room were bar stools, so folks in the last row were elevated a bit. But even against the back wall, it was less than 30 yards away so it was nice and intimate. Oh, and coincidentally, the room is painted all black except suspended from the front wall are two human adult size white plaster angels floating above each side of the stage. Overall, a great place to catch a show and from the atounding list of people who have played there, I wiah it was my neighborhood bar & grille! MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 02:52:07 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] the new songs hey well... interestingly, the songs that i uploaded yesterday and I tested thoroughly have been removed from the server. i suspect this is because so many of you have been downloading that the server got scared and deleted the songs. i think that if i re-upload them it will only be a temporary solution... so i'm going to email them to somebody else on the list (who shall remain nameless presently if only to protect him from 500 email requests for the songs) and he'll post them on his site (which apparently has a reliable server) and all will be well. you might have to wait like 1 or 2 more days. now.. just my few little cents on the songs: I personally don't think these songs will make the hardcore "old school Jewel" fans all that happy. I personally, however, quite like them. First, Standing Still: To whoever said the instrumentation was bad, I TOTALLY disagree. I think the instrumentation was very good and very appropriate. And to whoever said it was too poppy (i think it was the same person who didn't like the instrumentation), I also disagree. The only thing that makes it "poppy" is that it's upbeat and catchy. it's definitely a single... it's a catchy tune. the comment about the lyrics was kind of ridiculous seeing as though most of the lyrics are indecipherable (at least to me).... however, from what I could decipher, this song is not as deep as the atlantic. lyrically it kind of reminds me of Down So Long..... not in content, just in terms of being very, kind of, lots of to lyrics to explain not very much. I don't know what i mean by that, but I feel that this song is more about the tune than the lyrics. it's kind of the same as songs like "Love me just leave me alone" (this song is nothing like that song musically)... the lyrics don't really mean anything, it's just kind of a fun song.... the chorus goes like this: am i standing still/beneath the darkened sky/or am i standing still/with the scenery flying by/am i standing still/out of the corner of my eye/was that you, to pass me by? i won't walk away is very different from standing still, but i doubt it will impress hardcore oldschool jewel fans any more. it reminded me a little of serve the ego when i first heard it (it has kind of an etheral sarah mclachlan/dido sound to it).. but it doesn't have the middle eastern thing that serve the ego (which i'm not a huge fan of by the way) has. i really liked the instrumentation on this, especially at the end of the chorus. it kind of combines bass (this song is very bass-heavy) light electic guitar, and light piano with what seems to be kind of a drum-loop. but it's basically a ballad. lyrically, again, it's not deep as the atlantic. it's basically about commitment in a relationship... and the fact that most people aren't prepared to kind of take that full of "becoming one" with their partners etc etc.... it's quite a sincere song.. but not as sappy as it sounds when you actually listen to the lyrics. i don't know.. i see this song as being another single. i'll try and give you a sample of the lyrics, but it's hard to make out... 1st verse: a lonely street lamp/man on the street walking home/?/?/tide can bruise/violent indigo/rush home to your arms/you sooth my weary soul CHORUS: wrong or right/be mine tonight/hush ?????/love can die/but mine is blind/others stray/but I won't walk away/I won't walk away 2nd verse: clubs are full/of couples resisting being one/they wear their youths/like badges that tarnish all too soon/we'll be a team/our two will be one/love will be our fortress/when all else comes undone repeat chorus the bridge is completely indecipherable, then the chorus repeats again. however, oldschool jewel fans.. do not depair.... i have also heard A Long Slow Slide, which is much more up your alley. the lyrics are much more complex and kind of ... dark. it's full of very interesting imagery that i have not yet really figured out. the tune is also quite dark. i doubt this song will have much added instrumentation on the album, but i hope it has some (ie: i loved the subtle strings in Enter from the East and Amen... something like that I could see). anyway... yeah... it's much more, kind of, daring than anything on Spirit.. so that should please some people. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime is the other song I've heard. SHe's given the song a slightly new treatment. The instrumentation is just slightly more refined compared to the rough version she played on tour. the basic guitar riff has changed slightly.. and the lyrics are a little different.... the 3rd verse is totally new and there's a whole new section to the song that has a completely different.. kind of.. tune, in a way. i like the new version, personally. it's still a very rolickin' tune but it has a few new touches in the instrumentation that kind of give it a slightly more polished feel. some of you may hate that, but i enjoyed it. oh, and jewel's voice in the live version was great. she really went into that kind of deep, jazzy voice she does (none of this girly singing). here's the added verse... the new section's lyrics are a little bit more difficult to make out so i won't try to transcribe those.. but i can figure out the third verses new lyrics. now sister mary/used to be a nun/she thought that she'd retire maybe have her some fun/mister joe of the philadelphia joes/well he walked in the post office on?/he said "hey sweetheart, you know you look alright"... then it goes into the chorus. this is a very light-hearted song.. it always was.. but she kind of brings out the humour in it in her performance... she gives it a lot of character. anyway, that was my over-long review. my final consensus: i like standing still better than hands, i won't walk away is the token ballad (so far) and it's not bad.. it's very pleasant to listen to, if not a brilliantly deep song, a long slow slide is a very interesting song, and the new version of everybody needs someone brings out the humour of the song. i've also heard that jesus loves you and new wild west are more along the lines of a long slow slide... everybody who has heard new wild west (as far as i know) has raved about it as being one of the best jewel songs in a while... so that sounds good. later steve ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #368 ***************************
