In Clueless it (Jewel singing "All By Myself") appears when Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is lamenting her unrequited love for Josh(?) and begins window shopping all alone ("all by myself"...get it?) at some Beverly Hills shops. It's about three-quarters of the way into the film...maybe further. While I do not know where in the film her "Under The Water" appears in The Craft, I know "Foolish Games" is NOT in the Batman & Robin film...it's only on the soundtrack CD (I never could figure out THAT kind of thing...there are MANY cases of songs on soundtracks where not even a glimmer of a note of the song is in the film). Well, yeah, I can figure it out....it's called MONEY. For most of the time since finishing promotional duties for her 1998 album "Spirit" and the 1999 Christmas collection "Joy," her only public performances were renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on the bull-riding circuit--where her boyfriend, Ty Murray, is seven-time Professional Rodeo Cowboy Assn. champ. She was close to making that her only performance venue, period. After a whirlwind stretch of five years in which she sold more than 11 million albums in the U.S., wrote two books, became a fashion icon and co-starred in a movie ("Ride With the Devil"), she was done in. "I got real tired," says Jewel, 26. "It got real hard for me to keep up with everything. I ended up having to take a lot of time off and wasn't sure I'd want to come back to the business or not. There's a lot about it I love, but a lot that doesn't suit my nature." Jewel reconnected with her nature while living in the wide-open spaces of Murray's Texas ranch and in the rodeo world. But she also reconnected with her music and is ready to return to the pop life--although she's making sure her nature is reflected in both her upcoming album, due Nov. 13, and her image. On the latter, she says to expect down-home rather than designer. "It's every girl's fantasy to get dressed up," she says. "But now I want to be more of what I am in everyday life--blue jeans and messy hair." The music too will be less glossy this time around. She's traded in the pop sheen of "Spirit," which was produced by frequent Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, and the Christmas sessions, produced by veteran Arif Mardin, for an earthier approach closer to the folk-rock base of her debut, "Pieces of You." The new material was co-produced by Jewel with Dan Huff (Faith Hill, SheDaisy) in Nashville, and ranges from the expected first single "Standing Still" (which actually could go next to a Faith Hill song on radio) to the gritty "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" (which would be compatible alongside Melissa Etheridge rockers). The singer-songwriter even recorded an invitation-only live show set in a Nashville coffeehouse recently, with some of those tracks likely to make it onto the album. "On the first record it was easy to keep it raw and undone," she says. "Then suddenly people are thinking they have to make hits for radio. I was really protective of the songs this time." Not that Atlantic executives--and Jewel--aren't looking for hits now. But they agree that it all got a bit out of control before. "She's become incredibly mature and directed with a really fine sense of herself," Atlantic general manager Ron Shapiro says. "Marketing her now is about letting it be known that where we left her is not really what Jewel is. "She's not the cover [of fashion magazines]....We're not going to be too precious, not going to take advantage of every opportunity this time, but choose things that are going to let the truth be known about who she's become over the last two years." - ------------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 16:49:28 -0400 From: "Amanda" Subject: Re: [EDA] jewel in films?? For those of you who have heard Standing Still, I was just wondering what you thought of it. According to everything I 've read, it seems as though this is going to be her next single, so I'm kind of curious. Who would have thought that even though I went to Nashville and have heard almost every other song that may be on the CD, the one I haven't heard is the single!! But, like Scott and I were talking about... I'd be happy if I didn't know the tracklist before the CD came out. I always enjoy an element of surprise. I'm glad that there will be atleast one song on the record that I have never heard before. But I'm still curious if the people who have heard Standing Still think it will be a good single. Thanks! ~Rachel~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 00:08:14 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] Re: EDAs gone down hill... i know this is another long one from me... but please read it! well... again i am seeing all this tenssion on the list. i just started posting on the list this summer and when i got my first few messages i was really disapointed... i was like this is the list everyone is talking about, the list i was supposed to be excited about being on... and i kept thinking, most of these people dont even sound like they like jewel. i mean im always reading these messages saying how some of you dont even really like jewel anymore, well i think that you should not post messages like that on a list that was created becuase of jewel. so a few months ago after my first few emails i recieved i was thinking of not being on the list anymore, but then i thought oh well im here for jewel so ill stay, there has to be a few good ones out there still... then she did nashbash and it all changed for a little bit... so i stayed... luckily in that time i found a few EDAs that really were here for jewel... so here i am still on the list... also i agree with all of you out there who are saying how jewel doesnt owe us anything... i mean dont you think shes given us more than enough... its true that she has more dedicated fans than any other singer out there, and she gives us soooooo much... i mean private shows arent enough for a lot of you. and what about all the cds she lets us get away with having, youd have to be a fool to think she doesnt know we have them! is no one on this list greatful! i mean we have jewel and she brought us together as fans and from there we became friends... now that in itself doesnt happen to the fans of every singer or famous person for that matter, and that alone is enough to be greatful for... and the fact that she herself said she has many more albums to come, that "this way" isnt the last! i have to say i am very disapointed in this list right now. it was all fine around the time of nashbash, was that cus she was giving us something.... does she always have to be giving for us to be happy... well not me! she was "gone" for 2 years and i only love her more... cant you all see how much better she is now that she took that time off... she is so relaxed and happy... couldnt you see how beaten down she was getting by the end of the spirit tour..... which by the way i love that album!! some of you just dont seem to appreciate anything. i mean let her hang out with ty, let her ride her horse, let her feel free like she did when she was a kid in alaska hahaha, the point is leave her alone, stop acting like she can never give you enough.... if all she had ever recorded was POY i would still be happy and she would still be my favorite, considering there is no other album out of my 52 jewel cds that i listen to more than that one! i sent in one post when i first started writing to the list and all i got back was people jumping on me for what i said! i mean really what has happend to some people on this list that gives them the right to just attack people on here for everything they say... so its ok cus im ready for you to attack this message, dont worry im expecting it. i think you all need to remember that we are the EDAs cus jewel decided to live bravely and do what she loves and here so many of you are taking advantage of her dream! its terrible!! i think those of you who have decided jewel isnt for you anymore shouldnt post at all, but keep your friends you have met here. i dont think those of us who still really love and appreciate jewel want to hear about how you dont. the real test to a dedicated jewel fan would be who remains a real jewel fan after 2 years of getting nothing from her! well... i passed... of course i was never getting nothing from her, i always had the knowledge that she would be back, that she wasnt finished... and i had what she had already given me... and that is enough for a life time... and im not talking about only cds(which im sure i have more than my share of, but its only cus i love her, and i dont care how bad the qualitly is, its jewel!) but im talking about the way she touches you, the way you cant get enough of her from that first time you see her... well i know i understand myself on that topic and im sure the really attached jewel fans do as well. well im sure many of you will be happy to hear i am done... with this message that is... not with jewel, sorry to those of you who cant stand me, but ill never be finished with jewel! now and zen girl forever!! the disapointed angel... alisa - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 20:25:16 EDT From: LuckyStarr42@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] jewe; in films?? There were 2 others that day as well. Since were remembering one lets think of others as well. Without being too morbid may I offer my theory on the bahamas crash. From What CNN said the band had required that ALL equipment be taken with them. This caused the plane to go over its maximum take off weight- which is the amount of weight the plane can carry with one engine. One of the plane's two engines did fail and with the maximum take off weigh exceded there was hope of an emergency landing. I dont know who will be blamed for the accident, but this is definately a major factor in the accident Eliot~ saddened by so many losses ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 22:50:30 EDT From: Wigglytooth523@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Spirit Hey Angels, I did like Spirit. I like Jewel's growth musically and lyrically. But I am a huge sucker for a girl and guitar. With Jewel's amazing voice, the guitar is all that is neccessary for backup. And sometimes that is more than needed- her voice is that good. I feel the production of Spirit sometimes blocked that wonderul voice. But I admit some songs break the "girl and guitar" rule such as Love Me Just Leave Me Alone. Eliot ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #362 ***************************
