That's pretty obvious. But what most other people aren't doing is pointing fingers and whining about what can't be helped. If Atlantic decide to release the sessions, that's great. Maybe we could organise some kind of campaign to try and get them to release it - e.g. Roswell fans sent in 12,000 bottles of tabasco to UPN to get them to renew it. Something like that would be much more effective than sending an angry email to the list. Tom PS - I just want to recommend a great artist called John Mayer (www.johnmayer.com) to you all... He has a great voice and his lyrics are similarly frank, funny and inspirational as Jewel's. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 12:22:50 -0500 From: "LH" Subject: [EDA] What the fans deserve Okay, once again I feel the need to come out of lurking for a bit (actually, I guess I do post quite a bit now...anyway) to be able to throw my vote in the direction of Jason's reply to the whole issue of Fritz Creek and Jewelstock. Some people are never happy with what they are given and will always look a gift horse in the mouth. I think some of you are missing the big picture here. Jewel doesn't "owe" you squat. If you pay $15 for a CD, then they owe you a CD...that's it. Anything beyond that, the artist and/or record company does by their own free will, whether it be to "bribe" fans, or just because they are generous. I think MrBB has outdone himself over the years in going out of his way to make sure the EDAs have a "hook-up" with J-Team. They constantly do things to make sure that the EDAs are appreciated. When we went to Nashville, everyone was given bottles of water after staying out in the heat. They didn't SELL bottles of water, or anything, they were given to us free. But no one around me was complaining on how we didn't get a steak dinner with that. Sure, technically, they can afford to...sure, they'd probably get massive kudos for doing it, but then someone out there would complain that they didn't get cake with it. The fact is, if we DIDN'T get the bottles of water, I don't think anyone would have said "Well, forget this, they don't care about their fans" and left. So, once again it was an expense (no matter how small) and effort that wasn't necessary, but was done to be thoughtful. Jewel or Atlantic (or whoever, depending on the case) takes the time to organize, perform and PAY for those recordings or events and they can do whatever they want to with them. How many artists out there do as much for their fans as Jewel and J-Team ? If you can't appreciate what you've been given, go try and get some of Metallica's un-released stuff....last time I checked, Jewel didn't sue thousands of fans for having unreleased material. If I gave you $5 for a painting you did, poem you wrote me or whatever....does that mean I can harass you for anything else you don't use no matter if you want people to see it or not ? Being a recording musician/songwriter myself, I know I've got lots of stuff I'd rather no one ever hears again (pretty baaaad) and nobody is gonna tell me that I have to give it to them. Ok, that's it...I'm done taking up list space and time. Thanks again to Rowdy for the CD...at least I feel like there is some benefit (besides seeing Jewel) from dealing with that whole little adventure. Because she has a poem title "Morning Song" and another one "Daddy". I think most of you know already about "Daddy" but I just found out that she had one called "Morning Song". Do you think Jewel was inspired by these poems to write these songs? Perhaps inspired by that idea to produce something different? What do you think? I think "Daddy" has the same sarcastic tone, although Jewel emphasises more by singing Daddy almost at the end of every verse, with her cute voice which then gets very rough.<< i see the similarities with "daddy" although i'm not sure about morning song. i forget what the poem was about. i love sylvia plath also. i'm reading her journals right now, not the unabridged ones though. =0) love megan, the smily angel =0) have you had your smile today? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 13:18:41 -0400 From: Wrong Number Subject: [EDA] Bootlegs speaking of bootlegs.... But the fact remains that whatever your "motive", in the end you gave to the list (cds and stories) and you gave to Luna (by spreading her music) without expecting compensation. That is to be commended and not really a basis to call your reasons not "clean" :) I would love to have Luna out for an LRC one of these days. We have a healthy record of supporting our EDA performers here in Southern California and I see no reason why she shouldn't be a part of that. I also thank you for your kinds words about my article "Gifts Freely Given" on the EDAF site. I would ask others of you to read it (http://www.edaf.org/pw_vierling.htm) and let me know what your thoughts are on it as well. It is the first thing I have ever written of this sort and am curious as to others thoughts on it. We'll soon be putting out the call for help with Project Warmth and and I hope many of you will join in the fun. Anyhoo, I believe I have hit my posting limit for 24rs so I'll sign off. I'm still tingly over my first live Jewel experience (NashBash) and to me, that's more than can be expected from any performer. If I had no Angelfood, no EDA list, no special releases, just official albums and live shows, I honestly couldn't complain because Jewel blows me away. Even the inferior Spirit album is superior to most music out there. I'm more than a little bothered by all the negativity and finger pointing I see on the list at times. It seems to ebb and flow. When NashBash became the main topic of conversation, suddenly there were people questioning the integrity of J-team. After the show, the negative stuff slowed up. Now, talk of FCS and JS4 has led to demands that all these selfish people give up their treasures to the struggling, abused EDAs. It seems that every time something special is given to us, there is someone upset because they didn't get enough to satisfy them or, as with NashBash, they didn't get any at all. Here's a reality check: NO ONE CAN ACCOMMODATE EVERYONE. Take what you get and be happy. this is a fan club, not a country in need of revolt. Jewel and J-team are incredibly generous and regardless of how much you get, you're getting more than you should expect. I agree that it would be awesome if FCS and JS4 were released in some fashion. In fact, I do think that it would be acceptable to ASK for their release. Maybe the EDAs could do some sort of group thing, I don't know, send letters, email, something. And if someone out there does have a boot of either, let's get some trading or treeing or something going on. But there's a difference between "Hey Jewel, I'd really like to have a copy of FCS" and "Alright you selfish bitch, hand over the goods." And if the end result is no FCS or JS4, accept it. dan, the long-winded and probably offensive angel - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 14:27:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Lee Garner Subject: [EDA] FCS and JS4, other stuff... Howdy ya'll, I've seen a lot of controversy here lately, and to say the least, I hate it. I cannot believe some of the things I've heard, but that's not what this post is about... I believe that Atlantic and especially Jewel have the right to give us nothing if they want. The simple fact is, they give us plenty. Mr. BB keeps us in touch with Jewel and her people, not to mention great highlights on HGH and Clearwater with letters from Shane. I REALLY wish Jewel would give up Atlantic whenever her contract is over, and start her own label. Then she would be free to do ANYTHING she'd like. I'd also like to see Jewel take some time off after her next tour for "This Way" to do something new...after all, music and writing aren't her only talents. It was my understanding a long time ago that at some point there would be a video (dvd?) sort of compilation of her career and her creative process (or something like that). I assumed that the whole interviewing EDA's at the Nashville show was part of that plan..... I guess I'm also the only person who thinks Jewel should do whatever she wants with her music - if people like it then great, and if the don't, well then they just don't - I hate it when people say things like so-and-so 'sold out' - they made a choice, and it was their choice and that's it.... I know I've heard most those songs before, but I'm curious as to hear what a professionally (live or studio) recording sounds like of those songs... I mean, bootlegs can be crappy quality sometimes. Actually, I was more interested in hearing the songs that were recorded for the album that are so freakin' hard to find on bootlegs, if boots with those songs even exist (tough girl, for example?) but whatever, its up to atlantic. they and jewel probably don't want this stuff to be released, and i can accept that. (however, whether or not it reflects where jewel is musically, it still would have been a cool album... some of the songs intended to be on it were/are some of my alltime jewel favorites.) There's this Christian band I really dig. They're called Waterdeep. I love their music and songwriting... their praise songs are awesome. Anywho... so they have this official fanclub thing called the "Swim Team". And the members of the Swim Team occassionaly get special CDs that are only available to them. They aren't released on the general market, so only those who are on the Team get the releases. (for example there's high quality boots that become available to them directly from Waterdeep, and there's also a studio album that is available to them) I don't know, I guess I'm saying that it would be cool if something like that became available to us. But Jewel is hugely known, so Atlantic might not do this for fear of people making copies and selling them to non members, or whatever. Waterdeep doesn't really have to worry about that because they're not hugely known... not even in the Christian music industry. So a rare, limited Waterdeep release wouldn't be as high in demand on the black market as a Jewel release. But look on the bright side guys... if Jewel really did write on the reels "do not open until 2021" that would be awesome... I've seen some releases from old bands like Lynard Skynard that recently came out, with "new" never heard before material from way back when... and how the Beatles song "free as a bird" suddenly came out of the closet a long time after it was written and recorded... its pretty cool when stuff like that happens. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 00:49:38 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel concert stories gina wrote about the "riot" she created at the pantene pro voice concert... so i thought id share my story of the riot i caused. ok i know its a bit long, but its a good story so read it please! unless you dont want to of course:( well it was back in '99 at the now and zen concert in san fransisco, an all day concert and jewel was the main act! anyway i managed to get to the very front, there was no seating, it was on the grass... any way.. i made it to the very front right up against the fence just feet from jewel and nothing separating us but this fence and a very huge security guard... i couldnt believe it i was directly in the center... out of 4,000 people i completed my second jewel goal after seeing her once... so this was my second time. well it was about 5 hours of waiting through other acts before jewel came on... as usual she took about 30 to 40 minutes before she came on... i couldnt feel below my neck by this time with an audience of so many people pushing on me, but i didnt care, i was gonna see jewel!! then the band started setting up there stuff and i saw doug right next to me and my brother and i yelled DOUG!! and he gave us a thumbs up and waved so we gave him the same back! then about 15 minutes later i saw jewel walking up to the stage with poltz on one side and brady on the other, she came on stage looking fabolous wearing a great shirt saying "rodeo whore" on it, i love that shirt, and she was wearing the same skirt she is wearing in the interview portions of the sessions xmas video!! anyway every one was freaking out and going insane over jewel... jewel was kinda upset cus the sound people kept messing things up, but i heard her say to doug off to the side "f*ck um" it must be her favorite swear word hahaha. then a guy in the audience called jewel a "f*cking sellout"... but he was drunk.. and jewel replied "im a f*cking sellout?!" (yes its the story she wrote about in chasing down the dawn hehehe, but i was there) so if jewel is still wondering why he said it it was cus he was drunk, then he was removed from the concert.. good thing cus he was right behind me! but it might have had something to do with jewel telling about her going to the transvestite bar the night before and singing life uncommon for them... (yeah that is the story she wrote about in chasing down the dawn as well... its the one about her doing karyoke to foolish games and nobody knowing its her til the end of the song)..... any way by the end of the show eveyone was a bit insane to say the least! so when the show ended the stage people were throwing stuff off the stage, doug and tony threw there guitar and bass pics right at me, i have them both... i have jewels pic and one of her new guitarists pics now too!!!! got those last sunday at humphreys! any way the guy then threw out her water bottle, i thought my friend jessie would get it but she had moved so i desperately started moving towards where it was gonna land... then i leaped for it not looking to see the other 20 girls leaping for it, well i knocked them all over and started wrestling with this girl for the bottle, i was gonna get it out of her hands and i almost had it but i was pulled off by my mom... so i started a 20 person pile up and it was really cool... i also had to hold off about 30 people from pushing me out of my spot before jewel came on.... but i did it!!!! so there is my really really long jewel story, i hope you all enjoyed it... the few that actually were bored enough to read it. alisa, aka now and zen girl and yes it was that concert i am named now and zen girl from... it was where i met micheal and chuck from jmerch for the first time in person and it is what they knew me by for a long time, they know my real name now too... actually just micheal i didnt meet chuck til my third jewel concert... when i met steve... but thats another story... oh well its quick... i was getting something signed by steve the third time i saw jewel last september 27th and i was telling him how great his nails looked since jewel had painted them earlier in the car that day... i was lying of course, he knew it, but they looked horrible, they were yellow and orange and pink and red on every finger and they were all lumpy and uneven, but hilariously jewel!... it was interesting hahahahahha and very funny... but then he said "thank you love" and i was like... he called me love.. and i backed up right into a drinking fountain in front of tons of people... talk about embarassing... at least it wasnt jewel hahahahhaha ok im really done now... i must be bored hahahah alisa does anyone else have a jewel concert story?! go ahead and share... ill read it! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #359 ***************************
