I just thought I'd share that I'm entering my third year at Molloy College on Long Island, NY. I'm currently a Psychology major with certification for Special Education. I may be switching to a DOUBLE major of Psychology and Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology (no Special Ed), in which case a 5th year will be necessary. Oh, what to do, what to do! Oh well, hope all are having fun in San Diego. My sympathy to Amanda, it's never happened to me but I know it must be terrible. My cousin (22 years old) had a different experience, she was held up at gunpoint for her wallet and she had the guts to say "no, i'll give you my money, but not my whole wallet" so the guy agreed, and then apologized! Jeez. This world. On a lighter note, I will try to attend Randi Driscoll's performance on the 25th in NYC. I have to find out more info (time, $, age to get in) but hopefully I'll get to go. Talk to you all soon, enjoy what's left of summer! ~Patricia "El mundo es mi pollo" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 10:48:36 -0400 From: "Scott" Subject: Re: [EDA] Article Yes, I'm curious about that also.. Howdy ya'll, I read Amanda's letter, and I got an idea...if 25% of the list sent a small amount of money to Amanda, it might cover those bills and stuff she has to pay, until she gets paid in September. Just an idea, even sending a dollar would help, but I'd say try to send $5, if you can. First, I'd like to hear from Mr.BB and Amanda, to hear what they think of this...so ya'll get back to me. I have 3 Jewel posters that I'd like to trade for some new Jewel music on cd if possible. I'd really love the Puyallup show from Washington last year!!! If I can't get any music from them I'll be giving them away for postage to whoever on the list wants them, but I'd really like to trade if possible. The posters I am interested in trading include: 4ft radio shack promo poster (I still have a bunch of the little ones too.) purple dress poster with black hills gold necklace blue background concert poster, Jewel playing guitar (not big blue) hitting harmonics, wearing black. If you are interested please let me know. I'd like them to go to others who will appreciate them like I did for so long. P.S. I also have a ~ 5ft x 4ft "You Were Meant For Me" UK release poster I will eventually be passing on, but not now. If you want me to keep your name in mind for when I do, let me know. Charles. Round heah, we take care of our >own...let's try to bring Southern hospitality to >Cincinati ;) While Lee's ideas of course are noble and all, unfortunately I cannot allow such happenings occur on this list. Yes, in the past we've raised funds onlist for charitable causes, but they were either more widespread or projects concurrent with other large charitable causes. (although in one case four years ago we raised substantial funds (in concurrance with a larger cause) for an individual in honor of Jewel's birthday). It is very unfortunate what happened to Amanda, but with roughtly 1,800 list members, things like this are going to happen all the time, and they do. In just the cases I happen to know about, we've had many list members have costly car accidents, cars stolen, house robberies etc etc. This list is just not the right place to have a fund replacing/raising cause in a situation such as this. (I hope this does not come across callous, as it is not my intent, no at all... I am just tring to be brief yet get my point across). There are other reasons why this canot be allowed to occur onlist, but I won't get in to them now. Now, in the unfortunate case where someone may lose an entire home due to a catastrophic event such as a fire or weather calamity (that has happened to list members too) or some other overwhelming event, yeah, we as a group can come together to help out, but certainly only if a well known/long-time list member oversaw the effort. Let's just hope that event never comes so no one we know has to go through such an occurance. I must >say that i even laughed a bit last night at some of them Speaking of laughing/humorous calamities......I recall when an EDA had a car accident. Car had more than a little bit of damage, she had bumps & bruises (nothing serious). It was the fall of 1996....shortly after the JewelStock tape tree was completed. Her MAIN beef was she could not get a tape out of the car tape-player after the accident....it was just stuck in there. It was one of the JewelStock tapes and less than 24 hours after the accident she was writing me for a new tape :-) Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 16:37:31 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC Thanks speaking of car accidents.... nearly 3 years ago, it was my first day of work at my new job. I found it!!!! Down-home diva Jewel plays by her own rules Singer believes in herself rather than pop's fickle fads By George Varga POP MUSIC CRITIC August 19, 2001 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- DATEBOOK - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Jewel, with Jillian Speer 7:30 tonight (sold out) and tomorrow Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Drive, Point Loma $65 (619) 220-TIXS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- What do you do for an encore after selling 20 million albums, writing one of the best-selling books of poetry ever, starring in a film by acclaimed director Ang Lee and becoming an international celebrity? For Jewel, the answer was easy, if not risky in this era of fleeting attention spans and fickle fans. "I took two years off, and decided I wasn't going to do anything in music that I didn't want to do," said the local singer-songwriter, who recently completed her fourth album, "This Way," in Nashville. She will preview a few songs from her upcoming album when she performs with her new band tonight and tomorrow at Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay on Shelter Island. "I like the craft of performing and songwriting so much," Jewel continued, speaking from the Rancho Santa Fe home she shares with her mother and manager, Nedra Carroll. "But I'm in this strange position of being a singer-songwriter in this massive pop medium, and the most important thing is maintaining my authenticity. So I decided to make a record I liked and believed in, and not pay attention to radio or trends. And if it hits, it hits." And if it doesn't? "The music business has really become similar to the movie business, in that it's all about the opening week (of sales)," she said. "But all of that is buying into a mythology, and I just decided not to believe in any of it anymore. I'm oddly about as ignorant about pop culture as I ever have been. I don't tend to listen to the radio; I just write little songs and go about things in my own way. "And I'm looking at it more as a career; it's just my fourth record and there will be more. So I took a lot of the pressure off myself. . . . It's important not to get stuck in that game of outdoing yourself." Commercially speaking, trying to outdo herself would be a foolish game for Jewel. Her 1995 debut album, "Pieces of You," has sold 13.5 million copies. Her 1998 sophomore effort, "Spirit" (5.5 million copies sold), and her 1999 Christmas release, "Joy: a Holiday Collection" (2 million copies), were also successful, as was her first book, 1997's "a night without armor," -- which with 800,000 in sales is one of the most popular poetry books ever. It also inspired the parody "a night without armor II: the revenge," by New York slam poet Beau Sia. "I thought it was really cool," Jewel said of Sia's satirical book. "I met that guy. Actually, he was really nice. I knew my poetry was something relevant that would speak to kids. That's why I included a lot of my really early poetry, so kids could watch my progress develop. Doing that encouraged so many kids to start writing and keep a certain self-awareness through their lives." So, here is a contest: Prize: one Luna Taylor CD, Mariposa. For those who haven't heard of her, she is a singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas who is in the process of moving to Northern California. I guess you could compare her music to Jewel's, but I've begun to like Luna's better. you can check out a couple of her songs at www.lunataylor.com I will pay shipping for this, but please only people who do not have her CD need apply. Contest: Okay, like I said, very bad things have happened, and I'm a bit down... So, write me at rowdy_white@hotmail.com describing your wildest EDA adventure, in detail. I pick the winner, they get the CD... simple enough... No, I do not grade grammar, spelling and all that, but I like tales that read well... no limit on length, but as you can see by the way I ramble, I like long tales as well...
