The comment about the fiber optics is correct. Also there are several factors involved in transmission of e-mail when everything is working correctly. First you must send it to your isp. Then that mail server must negotiate a connection to the other mail server where the message will be received. All the messages are put in a queue for transmission (basically a line). If either server is extremely busy, the line gets longer and longer. Just imagine how many e-mails must have been sent to that address at almost the same time. I'm sure the server was working over time to keep up for a while there. Then many mail servers are setup to try again every 30 minutes... if your email was put in line and couldn't be sent the first time, it could have been several hours to several days before it reached its destination. Also I noticed that the original message bringing up the e-mail issue was from Hotmail. Microsoft has been having problems with ASP .NET code, and they have imported many of their MSN services to it. Its quite possible this delayed hotmail as well. Finally, I'd like to thank Mr. BB for his patience with the list over the last few days. - -- Lucas Holt Luke@FoolishGames.com ___________________________________________________ http://www.foolishgames.com/ "She runs through the streets With her eyes painted red Under black belly of cloud in the rain In through a doorway she brings me White gold and pearls, stolen from the sea She is raging - she is raging And the storm blows up in her eyes She will suffer the needle chill She is running to stand still" - -- U2, From "Running to Stand Still" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 11:10:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Mya Smith Subject: [EDA] Does anyone remember..... hey guys it's me, mya, again and of course i have another question for ya. this one requires those who have any clue what i am talking about to think back to last week some time. someone, somewhere, posted the name of this website that is totally dedicated to the 80s and i forgot to write it down. does anyone know the name of the site, and if so can you email it to me please? thanks guys. and, if you have no clue what i am talking about disregard my psychotic ramblings. talk to you all later...oh yeah and for all you who got invited to the private party thing-CONGRATS!!!! i am jealous ;) but really happy for ya too:) CIAO! Actually I sent in my info by the deadline, and Mr.BB didn't get it. I forwarded it to him again to prove that I did, and we are currently trying to work something out. I was curious as to the venue, because well I live in Nashville, and being the true Eda that I am I have Eda's staying at my house from all over the place, and I figured since I know downtown, I know how messed up Nashville streets are downtown, with all the one way streets. I know the venue now actually also I know it is a small venue, and that If you don't know where you are going it can be confusing to get to. I just wanted to know whether or not it would be easier to get them to meet at my house or at the venue. Furthermore, It had already been posted to the list that it is secret info not to be given out, so I don't know why you felt the need to be special and send me you're own private little e-mail. Bickering and childish whinges aren't going to get anyone anywhere. I have the money right now to get to Nashville and stay over and see the gig even though I'm in the UK. But for one reason I didn't apply there was no guarantee I would get a flight or get a hotel and I didn't want to take someone else's place. now Jewel, her recording company Lenedra and MrBB and everyone else involved have given an opportunity to 200 people to experience something they won't forget. Now I will be the first to admit I'm incredibly jealous but I think these people have a great opportunity and I'm genuinely happy for them. I couldn't go to Bearsville this year but next year I may be travelling from the U to Bearsville then Busk my way across the US for a few weeks. Hopefully I might catch Jewel then. It would be lovely if I could, but I won't bank on it. The purpose of this message isn't to upset anyone or tell other s what t do, but I just think that some of you should know you have really embarrassed yourselves, and to a very small extent, the genuine people on this list. So please stop it and lets wish 100 EDA's all the best in Nashville and make plenty of EDA noise for us so we can hear it on the album!! I would also like to give my sincerest thanks to everyone who has organised this Nashville event for remembering the fans that really matter. I also find it amusing how it was only a few weeks ago that people were saying Jewel was out of touch and should remember the people who put her where she is now. (all gone quiet from you Mr. hasn't it?) Finally I would like to ask a few questions not regarding this event: 1, How many people were at Bearsville this year? 2, Anyone wanna busk across the US with me next year? 3, Any EDA's wanna be on any of my messengers please private mail me, I am 19 years old, male and from Yorkshire in the north of England. Thanks to the J-Team once again for this event and also for my Bits and Baubles CD and thanks to Mike Connel for keeping his calm with some of you, the guy has the patience of a saint! And also cheers Mike for providing this great service that I fear many people take for granted. From what I read in Kelli's post, she wasn't trying to accuse any 1 of anything..and neither is Derrick from my point of view. What's wrong with wanting to know? And why isn't it any of our business? My Mom asked me the same thing..how are they being picked. Should I have said.. "SHUT UP MOM ITS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW!" Too uncontrolled, and not private at all. They chose EDA's for this very reason. It's a controlled group of fans who will hopefully sit there and listen and be quiet when she's on stage. > But no, they invited 100 EDAs plus 100 guests for free, all the > 200 have to do is get there. (and of course have a realistic chance to get > > there) > Yeah, that's *all* they have to do...haha. See, I've seen alot of letters from people no one else has. I'm not the only one with this opinion. And I really think it's everyone else making a huge deal over this. I had one question, and just one, from the very beginning. How were the winners picked? Period. It's simple. Usually when people dodge questions, it's because there is no good answer, or because maybe they're ashamed of it, or it's something they know will cause controversy. Otherwise, shortly after I first sent in that post, another would have appeared saying, "the winners were chosen this way....or based on this criteria., etc. Thanks for asking." And that's it. > So what if we don't know how they whittled XXX number of requests down to > 100. I am sure whatever process they used was as fair as possible to the > applicants when all things are considered. > If you don't know, then how are you sure? You are as sure as me, and anyone, unless you know. Right now, I'm not sure at all. I hope it was fair, but since no one has said this, I don't know. I mean, the fact that there are going to be people with an invite who are NOT going, therefore making it impossible for some who COULD have gone, to be able to go, isn't fair in itself. So don't say you're sure it's fair. > Was someone invited that won't be able to make it? Yes, of course. Where > people not invited that WOULD be there? Yes, of course. > Was there a way to ensure all 100 invites WOULD make it? No, of course > not. > Not if all 100 invites lived a block from the theatre, not if all 100 > invites had 6 months to plan. > Um, ok. > Heck, you didn't even try to get invited, why do you care so much as to > how > 100 were selected? > Cause the EDA's deserve to know...at least the ones who tried to go...and didn't get chosen. (I think I hear an echo) And how do you *know* I didn't try to get invited? LOL Don't ya just love psychology? > 100 of your fellow list members have an opportunity to be at what promises > > to be a very special event. Be happy for the 100 who get to go and please > stop trying to give the non-invitees any more reason (unfounded at that) > to > be disappointed. > Again, I never said I wasn't happy for the 100. I've written many people privately stating how cool this chance is for them. I just think for the ones who didn't get picked, that there should be some way for them to at least know WHY they didn't get picked. If this is too much to ask, then I'm sorry. I didn't think it was a trick question though. I'm just thankful that other contests and games aren't operated this way. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #302 ***************************
