So far, about 30 have shown up (of 37 expected), but with at least 4 known last-minute dropouts, the only MIAs I can think of who have not yet arrived are Mark "Crunh" Nissley and Rebecca Smith. The rollcall can be seen at http://www.quackquack.net/bv/who2001.htm As for highlights(?) from Day One....in rambling non-chronological order.......Amy was offering much in barter for a pair of socks, as she forgot to bring ANY and it was getting pretty cool here last night in the Catskill Mountains. But I loaned her a pair of my brand new size 15s and she doubled them up and used them as a sleeping bag. Young (maybe 8?) Katerina Campbell (Tammy's daughter......Robs too) gave a both hilarious and somewhat accurate offering as to "Where the stars came from" as we were gazing at the dippers and planets in the usally stellar nightime skies here in the mountains. Hmmmm...oh yeah...those of you that know Dennis will appreciate this. I was pondering with Amy Neufeld and Tom Proven as to whether or not I should (just for sanity, peace and quiet and giving SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE TO TALK FOR A FEW MINUTES DAMMIT)....I was pondering offering (NOT betting, offering) Dennis a $100 bill if he could KEEP HIS MOUTH CLOSED for 60 minutes. ( I would be safe, right? This IS Dennis we are talking about) Amy told me Dennis needed the money and would possibly accomplish it...so, I tabled the idea for now. I still may offer it tonight just for the heck of it. Will be fun for all to see if he can do it. Yeah, it's a hundred bucks, but it's "Live On The Edge" weekend for Mike ;-) Twas my first time seeing the "met on the EDA list" O'Briens since they were just Tom O'Brien and Rachel Martin. While they both have always been uppity people, it seems to me they were moreso yesterday, and VERY happy together as man & wife. It's nice :-) For a while Rob Campbell was building this cardboard cutout cathedral clock thing-a-ma-bob all by his lonesome at a picinick table. Rob, being quite the fatherly type (he DOE have two young children here each year with him and Tammy), likes to go off and work some projects each Bearsville, so this was not unexpected. I was only watching him from a distance, so I have no idea if it's (the cutout clock) going to be great, or if Rob just needs some help, if ya know what I mean. If he finishes it today, two of us plan on holding him down while the rest of us feed it to the campfire Gods tonight. (not sure if we'll actually do this, but we'll have digital photos for y'all if we do) Don't know why, but this motel smells like liverwurst......I'm worried. Oh, for you newbies wondering "What the HECK is this guy talking about?"...in a very small nutshell, "Bearsville" is an annual event where about 30 to 45 fellow list members, many returnees but a good 5 or so newbies each year, come to the woody & mountainous Woodstock region of NY State. We do so because many of us met at JewelStock and subsequent events and became good friends and like to do this each summer. Contrary to what some think, we do not sit around in these mountains praising the gal this mailing list was formed for, heck....her name MIGHT pop up once or twice a day. I cannot recall the last time any of her music was played here (when we DO have a CD player rolling). We just be normal folks having a normal and fun campout amongst friends. There's LOTS to do in this touristy/summer fun region and we always do. It's ALWAYS nice to meet people face-to-face that you onlu knew as RacelKitten435@aol.com or whatever. (You can also meet many "face" at Gerrits' EDA Yearbook at www.endor.org/jewel where HUNDREDS of list members past and present have entered profiles with or without pictures. Check it out...sign up) I gotta get my butt in gear and get to the campsite....so, in closing....those of you that were "on the fence" about coming this year had better be here in 2002. Besides, if you too are a chatterbox, perhaps I will offer YOU a $100 bill next summer to pipe down for an hour ;-) How can you refuse a chance like that? I'll report in later, and perhaps other AOLers will to as they can sign on here with me, Mike - the "roughing it in a motel" angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 11:13:12 EDT From: Fabsurfgrl@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Cool Tool for Your Sites, guys... Hey guys, Mandy here, been on the list since the beginning. I know a lot of you have sites dedicated to Jewel. For any of these sites that have multiple links, you should get this free tool that will make those links searchable, categorical, etc. There's no software to download or programming. It's pretty straight forward. We just got done with the latest version. For any of you on the list that upgrade to a paid version, I can give you 1/2 off, but for most of you, the free version would work just fine. See http://www.linkbank.com for info. Sean Penn asked Jewel to contribute a song to his 1995 film, "The Crossing Guard" (It's on the soundtrack.). Emily is the daughter of the protagonist, she is killed in a drunk-driving accident 6 years before the events of the movie. Jewel heavily rewrote 'Jessica' to make 'Emily'. Way back in '95 list members seemed to prefer 'Jessica'. Hi all, Jewel would like to invite 100 of you (plus one guest each) to attend a private free concert/live recording session in Nashville on Monday, July 30th. To be one of those 100 people you must first determine two things now and then proceed with the instructions. They are simple yes/no answers: 1.) Can I realistically be in Nashville on Monday, July 30th? 2.) Can I receive instructions via email toward the end of next week? If you can answer yes to both questions, and you'd like to attend, please carefully follow the instructions below for your chance to be invited. We have a very short time to compile the guest list for this show and cannot answer individual questions at this time. Simply follow the instructions. If we don't have enough EDAs by Monday morning, I'll post this to JeweLink, but we're hoping it can be filled with EDAs. When the guest list is full, those 100 fans who are invited will be contacted directly via email to confirm that they and a guest will be attending and will then be given the location in Nashville and time to be there. This will happen toward the end of the week. Once you have followed the instructions, please do not write me to check status. All 100 people will be contacted directly. Just be patient and check your email. I'd only add that we respectfully request that you do not post this information anywhere else. Doing so will only reduce the chances of fellow EDAs. We are not initially posting this to JeweLink or anywhere else because we want EDAs to have this opportunity. OK. Here we go. In an email addressed to JewelConcert@aol.com, send the following information on five consecutive lines as below. (DO NOT hit reply to this email or it will go to the wrong address!) Your first and last name Age The address on your ID or drivers license Best email address to reach you Guest name (you can change this later if needed) That's it. We will not share this information with anyone other than the people who will be compiling the guest list and those checking IDs at the door. Good luck to everyone. This should be another soon-to-be-legendary night of EDA list lore! It was amazing and it seemed so personal, unlike the bigger venues that Jewel has played in the past. I'm writing two days later because I was a little hung over. Me and my friend, who is a newly formed Jewel fan, went out afterwards to the village and the Bowry and had a great time and didn't get home till about 5 A.M. She, my friend, said she never knew she could sing like that and compared her to pop groups and thought she couldn't sing and was enhanced by studio magic. She was obviously wrong and now say's she wants to get her CD. Some of the EDA's were writing that they didn't know if she did new songs or old songs but the setlist's that I've read were correct. She sang YWMFM, Hands (accoustic), Break Me (not really a new song but new to Jewel CD owners I guess), Chime Bells, and the Cold Song. When she asked "What do you guys want to hear" most of the people were saying her regular album stuff like "Down So Long" and "Foolish Games". I didn't hear anyone request any of her "newer" or more rare stuff at the time. A funny thing happened though while I was there. When the first contestants, who ended up winning, came on they started playing the wrong video and stopped it half way, as the group was singing too. When the video stopped I accidentally yelled out "You guys suck" meaning the video people, and it might have sounded like I was referring to the group. Instead of being embarrassed or afraid I just laughed and apologized but I honestly didn't care because I was there to have a good time. I was right up front, even though I got there late, and had a good view of the stage between two camera men. Another funny thing was that before Jewel sang "Break Me" she said that all the single guys should find a single girl and at that point I really wanted to but then realized that it might have looked like I was with my friend who is a very beautiful girl and we've had our moments but we're just friends. There was actually one girl behind me who was really beautiful and even stepped on me accidentally but I felt like an idiot because of what me and my friend looked like, plus I wasn't there to meet girls, I was there for fun and Jewel. If I met some of you, hello again, and I'm glad you guys were cool. I would have to say that the majority of you were younger girls and very energetic too. That's a good thing, you shouldn't be shy at concerts. The best part about them is that you're there to get the feeling from the music and there's not many moments that are as fun as a good concert. Thanks for a good time EDA's and of course Jewel. I went to see a small concert at the C-Note instead by Jack Hardy, a longtime folk singer who's songwriting workshop i've been frequenting. I thought maybe I'd go to Jewel afterwards, in time to see her performance (I had no desire to see Willa Ford), but then I ended up not going, since I was having fun where I was and went out to dinner with some nice people and didn't feel like trekking all the way up to Central Park. So, I guess I'll have to catch Jewel on TV next time 'round. I could have been right up front at SummerStage if I had gone and gotten there early, but then I opted for a concert where I knew the people performing that was much less high profile and very good. So much for Jewel... Although, when I saw the write up in the Daily News today and reading peoples' emails I had a twinge of regretting that I didn't make it...but, oh well...if had been another night I would have gone but I guess I wanted to see this concert instead. The point of this email...nothing, really, except that I guess two free tickets to a Jewel concert practically in my back yard and I passed it up for a smaller, more intimate concert by a song poet that I know...had I known I wouldn't end up going I would have gladly given away the tix, but oh well...whatev _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #288 ***************************
