Crystal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 18:36:32 EDT From: Sokooletc@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Obvious Bias on the list I don't write on the list all too often, especially since the recent invasion of the peanut gallery came but I felt like it this time. Do any of you Jewel haters or Jewel obsessives realize what a "bias" is? A bias is when you will negate everything else one person has to say because you have a dead set opinion that what you feel is "fact". What some of you have to realize, and some of you have already, is that this is a free country and we can have whatever opinion we want. I can guarantee I can walk out on the street right now and find at least four different opinions as to who is the greatest live performer ever. The list of performers and groups are so diverse and so wide spread that to narrow down everyone elses opinion to say that Jewel "is" the greatest performer seems pretty crazy to me. I love Jewel and "in my opinion" is the greatest live performer "I've ever seen". I'm not speaking for the world, I'm not speaking for the list and I'm forgetting all the past legends that have come and gone. The obvious truth is "I haven't seen any of them to form an opinion of them". I'm sure if I was older and saw ! the Beatles I'd be saying they w ere, or Elvis or Jimi Hendrix, but I never saw them. I saw a bunch of groups and out of all of them Jewel was my favorite, plain and simple. If we keep holding a bias to towards or against Jewel we'll never know what we're missing. How much easier would it be if, let's say for example, someone just saw someone in concert you never have even heard of last night. If they say "I think she/he/they gave the greatest performance ever" why don't you ask them why. What made that performance better or worse than a Jewel performance? You might be turned on to a whole new type of music that in a year from now you'll wonder how you ever did without it. I used to only like Hard Rock and Rap. That's it. Everything else I branded as wuss music until my ex-girlfriend played Melissa Etheridge . . . all the time. At first I didn't like it, not because she wasn't good, but I was closed minded and didn't really listen. Then, the more I heard it the more into it I became and then she played a show called "Duets" and I watched to see her and Joan Osborne. Guess who was on that show that I saw for the first time. Our girl, Jewel. The very next day I bought the album and listened to POY constantly. I just loved the music. After thinking about it, if I had never listened to Melissa Etheridge with my girlfriend at the time I would have never given Jewel a chance. So keep an open mind. There's so much great music to be heard. Keith "the extremely tired angel" P.S I'll be at the free concert on Thursday the 19th. See you there. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 08:59:51 -0700 (PDT) From: liz lee Subject: [EDA] ABC game O for orgasm?!?! What does that refer to? Are we talking about the same person? Jewel is rarely in the spotlight. She's hardly done anything in the last two years. Take a look at somebody like Bob Dylan, he still manages to tour the world and perform at least 100 shows EVERY year. > Oh and if you want something thats going to be recorded in like, one week or > somrthing, then you're going to get a peice of crap. Buddy Holly has got to be one of the coolest songs I've heard ("Ooh-wee-ooh, I look just like Buddy Holly,/ oh, oh and you're Mary Tyler Moore..."). Another one I keep playing is Travis. If only I had known who they were a few months ago! Then I would have gotten Dido tickets. Of course, there's Coldplay, my favorite song so far being Shiver. I've also discovered Aimee Mann' "Save Me". I recently watched Bjork in Dancer in the Dark and I fell in love with her songs. ("You will always be there to catch me... when I fall!") And another new artist I like is Radiohead. I thought their song "Creep" was like the Beatles's "This Boy"--the singers are telling a girl to get away from her present squeeze. But it's about the singers saying _they_ are the creeps. I also put on R.E.M.'s Imitation of Life a lot. But I listen to Ayumi Hamasaki mp3s the most. It's very painful and intimate...she just broke up with her girlfriend of 12 years and mother of their children, Julie Cypher, and you can hear the pain and heartbreak in her voice in all of the songs. If you remember, Melissa gave Jewel one of her first big breaks when she invited her on the VH1 show Duets (which strangely only lasted one or two episodes....it was a good concept).. Melissa played all of the instruments on the album and added some loops and stuff on the computer.. So it's almost all her doing.. You can watch the video for the first single, "I Want To Be In Love," starring Jennifer Aniston and Melissa's new girlfriend, Tammy Lynn Michaels (from the cancelled WB show Popular) on Melissa's official site, melissaetheridge.com ...It's a great video..
