Maybe your definition is technically correct as far as how the name > originated (although I can't verify this), but regardless, the majority of > the world and radio stations use the terminology as meaning the "other" song > contained on a single. > Well I'm going to say the same thing to you - maybe your definition is 'technically correct' as far as how the name originated, because your definition 'technically' makes sense, but the majority of the world and radio stations use the terminoogy in the way I explained - your definition makes far more sense to have been the originater than mine does since we no longer use vinyls or tapes to the same extreme as before - besides, otherwise, as someone else mentioned, you wouldn't hear of albums containing rarities and b-sides, because then that would mean the "b-side's" were all songs already on released albums, and therefore would be more like a 'crappy' hits record for the non-singles, and as we know, the b-sides albums do not contain other songs already on albums. For another example, I remember watching an interview with Metallica where I believe it was Lars who said something like "we came up with this really good riff and it kicked ass, and then we realized it was just a b-side to unforgiven"...so there was born "unforgiven 2".... if your definition of the term b-side was correct, that sentence wouldn't make sense, just as a b-sides album wouldn't if it didn't contain previous non-singles from another album. I realize my tone sounds rather bitchy, but I can't think of how to reword it to make it sound otherwise. Don't take it the wrong way though, or as if I'm trying to start an arguement... it's meant in the friendly-ess way, as a discussion :) Although I love to be right (who doesn't?) I really could care less in this case - I could turn out to be the wrong one in the end, it's just that in my head my definition makes the most sense :) ~<3~ Sandy - ------->http://www.envy.nu/angeloflove<--------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 18:02:58 -0400 From: "Shannon Mackie" Subject: [EDA] This Week's Pictures Yeah - that really doesn't look like Jewel at all - Her hair is longer than all the other pictures, too. I'm sorry to correct you Sandy but i really gotta disagree with the same chord patterns comment! also you CAN have B-sides from a single on an album. B-Sides ARE what i referred to in the vinyl/tape explanation. Also take this example: Nowadays you can buy CD1 and CD2 of both singles. This is because hard-core fans want to collect the b-sides. If these B-sides werent put onto singles or B-side collections then they would be lost forever!! Some examples are Gene releasing the single 'sleep well tonight' with B-sides 'her fifteen years' and 'sick sober sorry' which ALL appeared on the album 'To see the lights' With the album being 20 tracks + 1 bonus track they could afford to release a single with all album tracks, which was only credited as 'sleep well tonight single' when it could have been a TRIPLE A-Side technically speaking!!! Also Ocean Colour Scene released 'B-Sides, Sea-Sides and Free-rides' and Del Amitri released a best of the B-sides album to coincide with the best of, and you could get a limited edition pack looking like a best of Box Set. U2 also released a double CD limted version of 'Best Of 1980-1990' with a B-Sides CD from the same era. Nick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 00:55:33 +0100 From: "Rowley" Subject: Re: [EDA] Question & OMG! OK, typically a band writes say 25 songs over a period of time, between them the record label the production team and influential executives they may pick 12-15 songs for the album. They then take some of these songs and spend a lot of time 'polishing' them. These particular songs are those which are viewed as being most commercially viable. leaving 10+ songs left over. now if the band releases 3 singls this makes typically for 6 b-sides. now you could use a live/session/remix of the A-side or the previous single. this would be to appeal to a wider audience, or you could use one of the songs which isn't on the album. So whatever you use it will be known as a B-Side. Now if one of these B-sides (or more) is a different song but with a similar/identical chord progression/riff/bass line/drum loop etc. i wouldnt say this was a definition of a b-side but rather a lack of inspiration, or dare i say talent? (obviously i do!) I would really like to hear an outsiders point of view on this as if im talking a load of lobbocks then i'd rather know!! Personally i believe my point(s) are correct because i have a big interest in music and the industry as well as being a musician myself. There's actually a really good chance that I might go to that now.. It sounds like a great opportunity, and I only live a few hours from there.. It's $25 for lawn seating; I checked at the stations's site (http://g105.citysearch.com/).. That's really cool, I'm more interested in the side stage artists so that's probably what I'll get.. Are any Jewel fans interested in attending? If I go (I'll find out tommorow or Friday if I can go) I'll meet up with you.. Katie, are you going? Okay then, let me know.. :-) <> scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME. AMPLIFIED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! It's very rarely that a movie makes me honestly mad.. Usually if a movie sucks, I'm disappointed and then have a "whatever..." attitude.. But when I see a movie that had so much potential and looked to have a spot in my favorites list up until the last half-hour, I leave pissed off.. The movie made me want to punch through a wall or two.. AI is a 3-hour movie that was flawless until it's last 30 or 40 minutes.. It was thought-provoking, socially/morally/societally important, and it had a high entertainment value to add to it.. But then something happened where it looked like the film was spliced with another.. The focus did a complete 180 and the last part sucked.. If you've seen it, I'm talking about when David falls and gets carried by the swarm of fish.. And that's not a spoiler; if you haven't seen it, that doesn't give much away.. Every single thing that happened after that point was so ridiculous and unrelated to most of the movie.. The film has put me in a bad mood for the night.. It was SO good and SO close to being a gem, but you can completely wreck a movie with the ending and this did exactly that.. I will never invest another 3 hours in that movie again, in the theaters or on video/TV.. However, on a positive note, I did spend a great near-2 hrs. watching crazy/beautiful, which showed that Kirsten Dunst is in a class of her own.. She will break away from the teen movies and be very successful if my predictions come true.. Jay Hernandez was a pleasant surprise even though his character was kind of flimsy and wibbly-wobbly at points.. And I spent another great 2 hrs. seeing Moulin Rouge again.. It's destined to be an underrated, under-seen classic.. I love it.. Even though it is damn near ruined by completely unneeded covers of U2 and The Police...These bands are sacred ground, folks.. Don't ever mess with their stuff if you get into public entertainment.. And the over-abundance of that damn "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" cover nearly made me pull my hair out.. But all's well, because the amazing numerously-repeated original song "Come What May" completely made up for it, especially at the end.. And Nicole Kidman's eye candy was a great compliment to Ewan McGregor's surprisingly great vocal skills.. Anyway, I'll shut up.. I just needed to vent.. :-) scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME.
