[Mike Connell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 01:23:40 -0400 From: "Scott Evans" Subject: [EDA] Ride With The Devil -- looking back I was just browsing through IMDB.com (it becomes quite an addiction), and I remembered about a certain forgotten classic. It was a great movie that featured an impeccably strong cast, a beautiful storyline, a marketable war plot, and critical praise. What was it? I wouldn't be surprised if some of you people who just frequent the list and barely read any messages haven't even HEARD of Jewel's 1999 film debut in the masterpiece Ride With The Devil. I'm still shocked and saddened by how this film by the great Ang Lee, which features Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, and, of course, Jewel, slipped through the fingers of the American public. USA Films put what could have been at the least a modest box-office success through a crazy marketing strategy (if you can call it that), that saw it reach all of about 23 screens. By contrast, the box office smash of summer 2001, Shrek, reached over 3,500 screens. While no one would expect a release that big, come on! 23 SCREENS?? This $30 million film grossed all of $700,000, if that, in America, and I doubt it did much business in video stores, with a shelf lifespan of maybe 2 1/2 weeks at the local blockbuster in these areas. Ang Lee has all but exploded in popularity with another masterpiece, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, so how much of a risk would it be for USA Films to rerelease and remarket this film to an audience that has probably never heard of it? It's new to them, after all. I say these are pretty strong arguments for a rerelease of Ride With The Devil. If fans alone can get television shows with horrible ratings a renewal, who's to say that we can't get this undeserved sleeper another chance of life. Most people who have seen this film would agree that Jewel's debut deserves to be seen. What do you say? scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME. AMPLIFIED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! Its so pathetic. I only saw the trailor for RWTD once on TV. They didn't even advertise it. Whats up with that? Its such a great movie. I was drawn right into the storyline. Everything about it was excellent. The actors, the acting, the action, the directing... I still can't comprehend how such a great movie goes unnoticed. With all the dough that goes into making a movie, with it not even playing in theaters (Only 23!), they probabaly didn't even make any money back on it. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 09:31:50 -0400 From: "Connell, Michael P" Subject: RE: [EDA] Ride With The Devil -- looking back Kelly lamented: * I agree with Scott. Can't help but wonder how the film would have been treated if then up & coming (and all Hollywood abuzz) Matt Damon hadn't dropped out of the part that ultimately went to Skeet Ulrich. Matt was just beginning to make a name for himself with Good Will Hunting and just before filming began with Ride With The Devil he dropped out of the project. Do you think we have any chance of convincing USA Films to release through a petition, a mailing bombardment, or another method? Tobey Maguire is coming out with the HUGE Spider-Man movie and Jewel's new CD is coming out (which looks like it might be pretty big, with the work with Itaal Shur and the possible inclusion of LMJLMA), so they'd have a good and profitable time area right then, and two huge stars in the limelight right then.. And it could actually help out with Jewel's sales by increased visibility.. We'd have to get on a plan pretty quick, but so what? Nothing major happens without hard work.. We could have a campaign to get people to send letters to the studio, with the major Jewel sites advertising it, mailing lists being emailed to get support, and a lot of other ways.. I'd be willing to put in a LOT of work to get this gem rereleased, but other people would have to do so also.. Is there any way we can find out if Jewel is interested in getting this movie out there? If a major star of the movie asks the studio or joins the campaign, it would be taken a LOT more seriously.. Alan, is there any way you can get Jewel to write a letter in support or anything like that? I know official management doesn't like to get involved too much with fan campaigns, but this is something important that we could really pull off if we all work at it..
