Here's a review from Sept. 2000.. I wanted to post it b/c it's an interesting look back.. And it's nice to see a positive Jewel review :-) Jewel delivers signature folk singing to adoring crowd at the fair Monday, September 25, 2000 By MYKE FOLGER SPECIAL TO THE SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER Watching Jewel timidly deliver her signature folk songs of teenage innocence and then pounce on harder, raunchier and fuller material, it became apparent Saturday night that she is evolving for the better as a performer and songwriter. This was no more evident than with her opening number, George Gershwin's "Summertime." Jewel tackled it with style, at times gruff like Janis Joplin's version, at times sultry as Billie Holiday's. Her five-piece band, including occasional songwriting partner and guitarist Steve Poltz, lulled the attentive Puyallup Fair audience into the pulsing melody as Jewel's voice soared, whispered and scatted above it. The song established the tone for the night, that Jewel was in charge. She strutted across the stage sans guitar, and played with the vocal melody of several songs from CDs "Spirit" and "Pieces of You." She sassed a la Patti LaBelle on "Deep Water," pierced eardrums with "What's Simple is True," and chunked up the soft hit "Hands." She displayed self-effacing wit in between songs. She made fun of her appearance, asking fans if she should get her teeth fixed. She said she was developing a double chin and tucked it into her neck to accentuate it. Blurting out "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "how much wood could a wood chuck chuck," she tested the skills of the woman signing at the side of the stage for hearing-impaired fans. Amazingly, the signer kept up and the crowd loved it. The second highlight came during the encore. Alone and inside a spotlight, Jewel began singing what sounded like an aria from an Italian opera. It was lovely and the audience was held in rapt attention. Poltz opened for Jewel. His acoustic songs and singing were solid. The Seattle a capella band The Trenchcoats, now just The Coats, started the night with its sometimes corny but deft four-part harmonies. The Detlef Schrempf Foundation sponsored the show, and the former SuperSonics basketballer thanked the crowd for coming out. scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME. AMPLIFIED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Hey all, Guess who just finished her last exam!!!!!! Yeah!!!!! I am free for the summer!!!!More time to spend on Jewel!!! (Gosh I love her) I was just reading like five hundred posts and I noticed all the controversy about her new album. Personally, I am counting the days. More like months. I seriously don't care what it is on it, country or whatever. I just love whatever she does. I really don't think it is going to be country, though. I am hoping that it will be more like POY, you know, her beautiful voice and some good acoustic guitar stuff. Spirit was beautiful and really polished but I prefer the more raw, folksy stuff with just her and her guitar. I would really like songs like Rosy and Mick, Sometimes it Be That Way, Carnivore, etc. So that's my take on the album stuff. Really I just want an album. Country music awards: Jewel looked beautiful, of course, very thin, though, which kinda scares me. It was strange not seeing her as the performer but like a backup singer kinda just put in a dark back corner. She only sang for thirty seconds or something. Did anyone notice that at the end she did her little "shy looking timidly up at the audience with a half smile face looking for approval" face? I love it. She's so cute. I wanted her to push the scary country guy offstage and launch into Love Me Just Leave Me Alone. Haha. So, have you guys converted many people into Jewel fans? I feel like I have to for some reason. Whenever people express something negative about Jewel I feel the need to go into a long, drawn out speech telling them why they are wrong. Because they are. I don't understand people who don't like Jewel. Anyways, my one best friend really disliked her, but then I guess my complete obsessivenss had an osmotic effect, because now she is just about as crazy as I am. My other best friend already liked Jewel, (in fact, when I first met her, she was singing Painters and I knew we were destined to be friends), but I turned her into a crazy fan as well. And my other friends have changed their tune about her as well. They may not love her, but they have a healthy respect for her. My sister also converted "I really hate that whiny Jewel" best friend into someone who now dreams of marrying Jewel. She's a girl, but that's okay. Have you guys influenced your friends? In perhaps a bad way? Another question in this extremely long post. What are some of your favourite Jewel song moments? Voice and melody wise? Mine are: 1) Break Me - "kiss me once, well, maybe twice, oh it never felt so nice" (I saw it on the View and she was so coy and sweet looking and so was her voice in that part) 2) Carnivore - all time favourite - "You lit the fire with an ingenious subtlety, and you slipped through the fingers of ambiguity" (Just the way her voice is all raspy and angsty, it gives me chills...) 3) Shadows Play - "but words are in the way, oh oh yeah, oh you know in the darkness, oh I, I know I, oh I feel you baby, when shadows play" (I like the jazzy Jay Leno version - like her mellow voice and all the ohs) 4) Serve the Ego - "Underneath the disco light everybody's feeling alriiiggghhtttt...."(near the end when she draws out the alright part and her voice is all husky - once again, chills) 5) Down So Long - "But I've been down so long, oh, it can't be long still" (end part, climax of song, scratchy voice, love it) It appears that I love her her husky voice. I do. I love when she gets all angsty and anguished sounding and her voice gets all cracky. It makes me happy. And I'm only going to write five because I could write a hundred. Happy summer!!!
