Then people who would not normally listen to someone like Jewel, would suddenly have an interest sparked and may listen to her music on its own. Then, they will maybe get the messages in her music. Those are the people you really want to get listening to her music. Those of us lucky or intelligent enough to enjoy and respect "serious" music already know she's good. It's the rest of the world that needs to listen and if sampling it for pop music will bring more people to pay attention to her music, then I think it's a great idea. Country - most of this music is sung (especially with males) with a slight twangy accent. Another common thing with this music is that many of the artists use songwriters to assist or sometimes completely write their songs. Most of the songs are about the simpler things in life, and there are very few angry songs....a lot of heartbreak, love, and hanging out with friends stuff. 2. Folk - this music is usually songwriters who have very simple instrumentation...either just a voice and a guitar or a very small subtle band. The lyrics and singing are the focus more than the instruments. Lots of songs of social awareness and love. Almost like toned down country with less twang. 3. Rock - this is a broad catagory and can include many of the other styles mentioned as well. It's sort of used as a catch all phrase for music these days along with pop (most stores just have a Rock/Pop section that covers a lot of different music). Much like alternative was used as a catch all in the 90s...before it became cliche. Most rock music is higher energy style bands, with mainly guitar driven music and primarily "electric" sounds. A lot of songs about anger, love, and just about anything else that crosses their minds. Most of the bands in this category write their own music. 4. Pop - These days, this category seems to mean, "We're on MTV". The trend in pop music lately seems to be, cute faces, lots of dancing, and millions of dollars in marketing. Some pop music is good, but most is just an overused beat with very simple, usually shallow lyrics. Most of the bands in this category do not write their songs (especially at first), but attempt to start writing them after establishing themselves in order to try to get some sort of music "credibility". Many of the artists in this category are people that you will be embarassed to say you listened to 10 years from now. (let's hear it for all the New Kids on the Block fans !!!). But many people enjoy it, so there is a place for it. ....still a far cry from the days when the Beatles were considered pop. Now of course, there is still R&B and Rap and all of that, but that's the main ones (many times R&B is considered pop as well and rap is pretty clear). Many bands could qualify for more than one category and I believe any real talented songwriter could write for any of the styles if needed. Well there's my opinion, so there ya go...take that and like it ;-) Matrix - ---The Angel who is exhausted from band rehearsal..... > Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 08:53:55 -0500 > From: "Kristie Biggs" > Subject: [EDA] Country/rock/folk etc. > > Ok, I know I've been posting a lot lately. Sorry =) I'm just curious as to what different peoples views are considering what makes a song either country, folk, pop, rock etc. I think there are some differing views and I want to know if there is anything definitive that distinguishes the genres. > > Thanks! > > Kristie > The Angel in red (today) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 02:19:09 -0500 From: "LH" Subject: RE: [EDA] 7 unreleased songs 1. Both Follish Games and Hands, quite impresivly I'might add. Some people have also said Jupiter was mixed too, I havn't heard it yet. I Have the mp3s if you'd like me to send them, just let me know. Katie & Matrix, I understand your dis-like for techno, I used to be the same. I live in the CA bay area though, and clubing and raves have been the thing here for quite awhile. I've argued the whole meaningfulnis(if thats a word) behind songs. But some people just love to dance, it's their release, and techno just sets nice beats for them. I can't argue with that cause I like to mosh, it's my release at times, and I know most people don't like too. Alot of my friends only really listen to techno, but I showed them the Jewel mixes and they loved them. I think the essence of the songs is still there, just as strong. There are alot of good techno songs and if you have any wish to expierence them check out the Jewel mixes first. Well, I'm not trying to argue anything, everyone is entitled to their owen opinion. - -Billy - ---------- >From: JimboUK999@aol.com >To: jewel@smoe.org >Subject: [EDA] Re: Why hasn't Jewel been remixed or sampled? >Date: Thu, May 31, 2001, 5:40 AM > > > In a message dated 30/05/01 20:04:56 GMT Daylight Time, > owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > > > << > Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 16:24:06 +0100 > From: "Chris Groves" > Subject: [EDA] Why hasn't Jewel been remixed or sampled? > > What Jewel needs to (re)launch her singing career > is a major artist to sample or remix one of her > songs. > > It worked for Dido. Dont post here often, but felt almost obliged to today. ok, im not going to mention all my favourites co there is WAY too many, but right up there at the top (with Jewel and Steve) is Kathryn Williams, and anyone who hasnt heard of her should DEFINETLY check her out. Also thea gilmore and Jont. Im still a huge Carole King fan, and am currently going throught somewhat of a Nancy Sinatra period. K, well thats all. Thanks for readin. Check out Kath Williams! Oh and i Went to see Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter last nite, who were both excellent - is anyone else is the UK going to see them soon?? i recommend it if you are considering it, despite the costly #22.50 (for me) price tag. OOOH, and a bit of trivia here, they (together) performed 'thats the way love goes'! i was soooo excited when they started it. It faired very well in comparison to Jewel/Merle Haggard. brilliant. The also covered 'I'll Be back' by the Beatles, and 'Four seasons In One Day' by Crowded House. Great Night!!!!! While I'm sure a three year old yodeling is a cute sight to behold, many others have recently posted about their obsession with this archaic form of communication with field amimals (ie, sheep and/or goats). Yes, some claim yodeling is a romantic form of musical expression, but combine that argument with the previous sentence, and I am even more disturbed! And THAT is something many on this list never thought was possible... The last time I felt compelled to save this list from itself was when Alan "MrBB" posted of his obsession for roping plywood rodeo animals while touring with Jewel. I warned everyone that "friends don't let friends rope plywood animals", then to illustrate how dangerous it was, I built just such a plywood uber-creature to show EDAs the error in Alan's ways. Woody the Plywood Cow totally backfired. He stole all my press for well over a year, traveled more than I did, made many friends, joined this list, made much better posts than I did, and well, became quite the ladies' man, err, cow. The little smartass has even acquired a domain name and may set up the first successful dot-com to launch since Amazon! (Then again, those plywood hooves are quite the detriment to creating accurate HTML, not to mention his atrocious spelling -- plyonics, I think he calls it). Anyway, here's how we nip this "yodeling" thing in the bud, so to speak. As ambitious EDAs have done in the past, we do another "EDA Cover Tape". A "cover tape" is where EDAs sing various songs by Jewel, then we compile and tree it as angelfood. And no, I am not talking about just covering the yodeling song. I'm talking about ANY of Jewel's songs. Imagine yodeling "Foolish Games!" That also puts to rest the "SOMEONE SHOULD RESAMPLE ONE OF JEWEL'S SONGS AND MAKE IT WILDLY POPULAR" thread. After a yodel-matic (tm) version of "Hands", what self respecting artist would EVER consider doing a Jewel cover?!? This will also identify the truly outrageous Jewel fans among us, then we can write "Jewel" on their foreheads with blue sharpies (as Liz did at Jewelstock -- we can't let her ever live that one down, even if she was only 15 at the time ;-) Of course, this plan could backfire, too. Imagine our surprise when the Atlantic lawyers file a cease and desist order, revealing Jewel's secret plans to release her own CD of "The Honey-Yodel's (tm) Greatest Hits: Yodeling Angels, Volume 1" Stranger things happen...
