[Mike Connell ] Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) ["Charles Gregory" ] Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) ["* Jewel *" Subject: [EDA] Jewel@smoe list back on the air. All please read. OK....we are back on the air. However, I guess I would be remiss if I didn't say a few things. I do of course realize that it was a very few people that let things get out of hand the last few days. Still, these kind of occurrences unfortunately snowball even further and I had to squash it last night before more people joined in, others unsubscribed in droves writing emails to me and/or the list in complaint etc etc. The ugliness potential was very high. I have said it before and I must say it again. For very good reasons (just read the last few digests), certain topics are forbidden on this list, and they the ones where people generally have very passionate opinions on the subject. History has shown time and time again things get quickly out of hand when one of these subjects comes up. The banned topics include: * abortion * politics * the death penalty * religion and now we can include gay and/or lesbian marriages. The #1 reason this list exists is for fans of Jewel and her music to discuss her, and related things. Through the years it also has expanded/evolved to include discussions and events revolving around the list members themselves and events we plan and go to together, whether or not Jewel is any where near the place. (i.e. she quite likely will never make one of our annual Bearsville camp outs). Newcomers, please be aware of this and realize that posts about upcoming and previous list member gatherings are acceptable and desired. Many feel it is the very life giving essence of this list. Yes, off topic posts are acceptable, but you have to use common sense as to what might be best asked or posted elsewhere. There are literally thousands of mailing lists out there for just about every subject you can think of. A good number of them can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com. We even have an offshoot list right here called EDA-Thoughts@smoe.org which is now in its' 4th year. It was formed to help take up the slack when this list went moderated in the summer of 1997 and off-topic posts were limited. Its' main reason for formation was that it was for others to have a forum to post their own creative arts (poetry and whatever), but that list too evolved into something more. Hopefully a longtime member of that list can post here what it is all about and try to recruit new blood. If you do post something here at Jewel@smoe.org that you consider to be off-topic, in the "subject" of your post I ask you to PLEASE use the acronym NJC (which stands for No Jewel Content). Using that acronym clues in others that are here just for Jewel content that they might just want to skip that post. it is not necessary nor desired to use "JC" in the subject of a post that has Jewel Content. The previous list owner of Jewel@smoe.org (who happens to own smoe.org) once decreed that a post is to be assumed Jewel Content unless otherwise noted, and that seems like a wise decree to me. In past years some took to using the acronym SJC (some Jewel content) for posts that the author of the post judged just that, having some Jewel content. Feel free to use SJC where you see fit. Again, please keep in mind this NJC acronym is NOT a free licence to post anything you want. It is probably best that you don't post to the list announcing something way, way off-topic or asking something way off-topic that the answer to which can be easily found elsewhere. Most of you recall this list was moderated for over three years. You would not believe the posts that came in that were never sent on to the list. These included: asking for help on an algebra problem asking for a strawberry-rhubarb pie recipe selling Girl Scout cookies asking for a particular zip code asking for sponsorship in The _____ Walk etc. If we had an "anything goes" policy here, things would get quickly out of hand. I realize it is an impossible task to make the nearly 1,500 people here to all be happy with the list, its' content and what may or may not be proper content for an off topic post. So it is senseless to even try. It is just best to ask all of us to use common sense, utilize other avenues, and hope for the best. One last topic. Name calling. Please do not do it on list. It is a very good way to raise the ire of others and myself and perhaps leading me to ask the name caller to leave for a while, or permanently if multiple offenses occur. Along these lines, the Harris "Sit On It" rule is a good rule of thumb to follow if your passion has been negatively stroked and you feel compelled to post something to the list you likely will regret later. Dennis recently made a post on this subject....just last Wednesday as a matter of fact. Seems like some neglected to read it. For the benefit of all I include it below. Please read it. It makes sense. OK.....were are back on the air. Please play nice :-) Game on! Mike - EDA/Jewel list Grand Poobah :-) _____ Dennis' post: Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 15:12:00 EDT From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Sit On It, Angels! To quote the great philosopher Bill Cosby: "Everyone have a coke and a smile." Spirited arguments are healthy. A diversity of opinions is healthy. A diversity of topics is healthy. If this list DIDN'T piss off a few of us from time to time, it would be "milktoast" BORING. After being on this list for six years, my advice is: 1) Don't take posts personally. 2) Don't get vicious with your replies. 3) Don't panic and run for cover. This activity should be enjoyable, even if you have to ignore some comments to continuing enjoying yourself in the "Jewel List Funhouse". Five years I offered the "Harris Sit On It" Rule: Write your post, then save it as a draft. Come back to it HOURS later and re-read it. If it was written when you were angry or upset, odds are you'll tone it down (or even delete it). Good advice then, good advice now. And above all, have fun. If you feel a need to attack someone, beat on those "Harris Brothers" (they're trained professionals, they can take it! ;-) _____ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 21:18:33 EDT From: Prism14960@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) In a message dated 5/8/01 12:20:23 AM Central Daylight Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: << If Jewel could come to your house and sing one song (only one song) for you and only you, what song would it be? >> ::sigh:: Near You Always :) 'Cilla ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 19:06:52 -0700 (PDT) From: shell Subject: [EDA] re:NJC marriages Dear Angels, Wow, twice in one year I came out of my lurk mode. :) I'm on a roll. :) I'm gonna say now that this really wasn't in response to any one particular message to the list about the whole "alternative" marriage thing... just a disclaimer I myself am bisexual and have had numerous relationships with other females, and although I am now with a guy named Stephen for whom I care a great deal for, I should hope that one day if I meet a girl that I fall for hard, and I want to marry her, then I should be able to without the state sticking it's nose into our relationship and dictating whether or not recognizing it would be legal. I personally believe that the intimate relationships we have amoungst ourselves are not something that the government should tamper with as far as saying what type of marriage you can have. My sexuality has nothing to do with the government and they should have nothing to do with it. If I meet some girl named Sarah and Sarah and I decide to have a "real" wedding *with* a preacher, *not* held in a court house, then we should be able to have that. Maybe it's just me. take care of yourselves and someone else Courtney the erotic, exotic and just a little psychotic angel :) _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 03:04:10 -0000 From: "Charles Gregory" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) << If Jewel could come to your house and sing one song (only one song) for you and only you, what song would it be? >> Foolish games for sure!!! charlie _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 May 2001 23:22:19 -0400 From: Lucas Holt Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) I have to agree with that one. :) Charles Gregory wrote: > << If Jewel could come to your house and sing one song (only one song) for > you > and only you, what song would it be? >> > > Foolish games for sure!!! > > charlie > _________________________________________________________________ > Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - -- Lucas Holt Luke@FoolishGames.com ___________________________________________________ http://www.foolishgames.com/ "for the silent miles of dirt roads Our eyes busy reading the signs (on the days we took the car)" - -- Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 23:21:27 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) she wouldn't sing anything.... she'd just scat for a long time.... a very long time :) cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 23:25:44 -0400 From: "Kerri" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: New thread (jewel singing one song) > << If Jewel could come to your house and sing one song (only one song) for > you > and only you, what song would it be? >> > Wow this is hard, considering I haven't heard a Jewel song that I don't like.
