How about a new thread: You can respond to the list or me and I'll compile all the answers and post the resulting totals: If Jewel could come to your house and sing one song (only one song) for you and only you, what song would it be? For me, sparing you a long post, it would be well, I'd have to think about it for a week or so, I couldn't decide right now. Sorry. But I'd love to hear what you guys and girls would love to hear her sing just for you. This was going to be a new poll on my site, but I am sick of the current gay marriage thread. Do you have a magic time machine that you flew back into time with to divert Christopher Columbus to see what would happen? That's right...I thought not. The truth of the matter is that if Christopher Columbus hadn't "discovered" (and I use that word loosely) America, *everything* would be different. It's a chain reaction. We don't know that it would still be mainly a native american population, you don't know that perhaps maybe the chinese, swedish, spanish...anyone else....wouldn't have "discovered" it and changed the basis for the whole said arguement below. > Do you > really wish you (people on this list!) grew up in the Native American Indian > version of what America would be? Most of the people on this list wouldn't here if Chris hadn't stumbled upon America since the majority of american's are from european descent. As I said before, you can't judge what the world would be like at all, because taking one event away from history would completely change the entire history of the world, for all we know, we would never have had WWII or discovered insulin, or erradicated polio....just because of that one event. You also don't know that the Native American version...had the land and all it's people not been disturbed...of America would be any different or any worse off that it is now. > Do you think the natives would have came up with the idea of a > Democratic Republic with 3 co-equal branches of government with checks and > balances to see to it eventually that the minority would not be oppressed by > the majority? haha...that's funny. Like a democratic government is the best form of government possible. Like a capitalist society is the best society ever.... the government does not make sure the minority is not oppressed by the majority...besides *YOU* are oppressing the minority - gays & lesbians - yourself, by saying they don't deserve equal rights when it comes to marriages.... you have to be kidding yourself if you honestly think that all forms of minority are free from oppression thanks to your government. A capitalist society that balances equality? that's an oxy moron! > Would they have built this nation into the greatest nation on > earth? Where in the world do you get the idea that you can classify America as the greatest nation on the earth? No seriously...this isn't a hit to America here (it would be silly to do that on a list where the majority are Americans) but to claim yourself as being THE greatest nation? Come on. There are many other great nations out there. I could point out many pitfalls that America has such as health care, homelessness etc. that other nations don't have.... no nation is the greatest nation ever, without every single country on this great planet, nothing would be as it is...where does America get the money to become such a "great" nation? by making loans to poorer nations and charging interest, by trading with other countries that can provide things such as oil that the states *needs*...without those other countries, you wouldn't be sitting your little pedestal thinking you were so great. > maybe > one day you can see how truly lucky you are despite your ignorance. I think I can safely say that maybe you don't know how truly lucky *you* are, despite your ignorance. If one tiny little event in history had changed, perhaps you'd be starving in an impoverished country, or run off of YOUR own land because of others, and perhaps then you'd be able to look at this from more than one angle. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 21:40:12 EDT From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Ty and Jewel In a message dated 5/7/01 5:49:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > LOL, I can see it now..... They are no longer the majority. We just act like we are. I truly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Go Gerrit, Go Gerrit, Go Gerrit ...... :-) I'm just going to assume that Joe has simply lived an extremely sheltered life thus far and will hope that as his experiences grow, his mind will open a little. I've always had great respect for marriage, and relationships in general for that matter, and I'm not a Christian myself. Guess I'm 'evil' huh?- funny though, I seem to have more so-called Christian morals than most of the devout Christians I know - Isn't it Ironic? I have nothing against Christianity - it's a beautiful religion in it's own right - it's some of the people who have warped the intentions that I take issue with.... So let's see, Joe has alienated how many 'subgroups' (for lack of a better, all encompassing word here....)? That would be Gay and Lesbian list members (and those of us sympathetic to the cause), anyone who is not a 'good Christian', and the native american list members.... Did I miss anyone? BTW, who wants to take a bet that somewhere in Joe's ancestry there's a bit of native american blood? Anyway, I never was good at putting what I want to say into words for a post, so I'm going to shut-up now..... Hugs all!! This will be popular with many folks and unpopular with many other folks. Plain and simple.....due to the state of the list today, with the ridiculous fighting on a forum where it truly does not belong, I am closing down the list for about 24 hours so things can cool down and this can all just be forgotton so that we can move on. Please do not send ANY posts to the list until I post tomorrow evening that we are back on the air, so to speak. Any posts sent in until then will be discarded no matter what the content.
