I thought that because, first, it looked dangerous and gloomy, and second, becasue she wasn't doing anything. She didn't do anything until the end, right? When speaking about how it made me feel, the video was awesome. But when speaking about the gloominess, it _is_ kinda depressing... What was the Jupiter video like?? What was it about? I tried to watch it online (I don't have cable), but I could only hear the music. You know, choppy connection? But the way she remixed the song was nice. The first time I head it I was like, ewwwwww, what did she do to it? But I forgive her. An electric fan That keeps me company tonight It's nights like this make It easy to forget Why we used to fight Love is an ember Born to burn out Well, I wish it would No, I don't feel that good Lately they blend And blur with the scenery Crowded rooms make it easy To forget I'm lonely The cat puked in my shoe Guess it's fitting it would But I, I don't feel that good Regret's a useless word Usually I try to avoid it But sometimes it gets so quiet That I can't remember the morals But the part I can't admit When you're thinking out loud Is just a whisper That feels like a shout Oh, God, I made a mistake I can't breathe without you The cars driving by They throw their lights Against the wall I should go to bed Get out of this chair And turn the TV off Oh goody! After the tragic shooting in California do you feel as if they're glorifying the shooter with extensive coverage? Here's my quick take on it. I personally think it does, and here's why. When the Columbine shooting happened who was mentioned more than any of the people involved? The shooters and their little misguided gang. I know it might seem insensitive to lessen the coverage on the shooting but what happens afterwards is usually a mimic crime. The kids who were on the edge of a breakdown now are given ideas and want to be glorified while avenging their abuse through the years. Also, the news wants something to report and the news will find people and stories inside the tragedy like the shooters history and his family and his friends. Meanwhile the victims are basically unnoticed, only classified as "2 victims". I can almost guarantee that by next week we'll know more about the shooter than we would about the victims. So what better way for a psycho to go over the edge then to become famous. The next step will be to exploit the tragedy and make it a commercial success. We'll make records about it, sell images and do fundraisers while the memory of the "2 victims" is replaced by a record contract and self-promotion of "some" of the money hungry artists. This is a huge tragedy and if the suggestion that this story is not important enough to cover isn't what I'm saying. I think that unless there is new news it should be limited to only mentioning the victims and what can be done to prevent this again, otherwise don't drudge up bad memories to a child who will probably be in therapy for the next 6 years and give the shooter a "Billy The Kid" fame that he doesn't deserve. Some of you may or may not agree but that's what I think. So what do you think? Keith "We shake our fists and say "Well good golly we're mad, That God kills children with our very own hands". We claim innocence and not to understand, or do we?" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 13:37:45 -0800 From: Gerrit Subject: Re: [EDA] Quick Question for the list. You do realize the reason they cover it, right? Two words: People watch. Don't blame the media cuz they wanna make a buck. For 95% businesses, that is the bottom line. Just observe the sick society and take it with a grain of salt. Life goes on ... for those who don't fall victim. Wish it was fair, but it never has been ... never will be. I couldn't agree more, keith. And let me add to it by saying this... I seriously think that the media should stop making nationwide coverage of these shootings, because its becoming a sick, twisted plague. Its putting ideas into kids' heads. A few years ago, one shooting occured. Then again a few months later. Then again, and again, and again. All of these were highly publicized. Then by publicizing them.... kids get this idea, "hey... my life sucks too.... i have no friends, so i'll just kill everyone at school tomorrow." If they kept the coverage local, it wouldn't be so bad. But once they get it out, nationwide, that's when all the havoc starts. Who does it benefit, anyway by telling the whole world what some twisted 15 year old went to school and did? Nobody, except maybe the kid because he got his 15 minutes of fame. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 15:01:54 -0800 From: Gerrit Subject: Re: [EDA] Quick Question for the list. cymbaline wrote: > I seriously think that the media should stop making nationwide coverage of > these shootings, because its becoming a sick, twisted plague. Now it's rarely even news unless the death was public. It is obvious that media coverage has escalated the problem. Unfortunately the freedoms we have in this country prohibit us from stopping the media from continuing to make this problem even larger than it currently is. I hate the media and how it exposes this stuff. For instance, Dateline NBC had a show the other night about last year, how the media only covers certain events... and reported 25 or so deaths that weren't publicised by the media in one week, yet, they're contridicting themselves by even airing that- we don't see NBC airing every tragic death. The do it when it's a "big" story.... why air it at all? When stories like these air, it makes me so sad. things run through my head like "what if this were to happen in my town?". My two best friends are still in high school... I'm supposed to be, but things change.... anyway... I just think what would happen if this happen to one of my friends. What is this world coming to? Why do these things happen? and is there really anyone to blame? Is it just some twisted kid who wants his 15 minutes of fame? or is it something deeper than that? You know... in four years or so, my daughter will be going to school... what happens then? I don't see things getting any better, and it's scary. I don't want to have to write a eulogy for my best friend any time soon. - ----Original Message Follows---- From: Gerrit Reply-To: amethyst@endor.org To: cymbaline CC: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Re: [EDA] Quick Question for the list.
