'You'll never find me writing a book of poetry,' she declares. 'I think I'd like to be shot if I did something like that.'" As for Beth Orton - I AGREE! And, on another topic, if you're stuck choosing an Ani song... go with 'Gravel' - that's the one that hooked me! I've been a member of this list for about 5 years or so and acquainted with Jewel when she was still performing in Ocean Beach at Joe's. I usually lurk in the background these days, but felt compelled to respond to this rant about Eminem. Personally, I rather enjoy his music. Much like Howard Stern, if you take the time to actually consume all of the lyrics and messages, rather than excerpts that those of us in media (I'm a VP of Marketing) like to clip for higher ratings and user base testing/selling...you will find messages that speak of trials and turmoils very true to our inner city community (as well as other sectors), much like Jewel's music does at times. You have to remember that Eminem is playing a part, much like an actor, and the very fact that he's so successful, makes him quite a good one. Also, with the backing of someone like Dr. Dre - who is noted as a big fan of Jewel's mind you - there holds some quite valid reasons why we should not ignore music just because it's offensive at time. Many find Jewel's "Daddy" just as offensive as "Dear Stan" by Eminem. I am sure you can come up with many valid arguments to defend that these two are different, but I assure you, at the core, they are not. The bottom line is that one of the core issues of Jewel's mailing list, or as she hopes it to deem true, is that we respect all artists and musicians, whether we agree with them or not. I'd say buy his album, and give it a shot - unless you are not a fan of rap and hip-hop at all, in which case, you wouldn't enjoy it at all. Remember, rap is the literature of the black and Hispanic community. The truths ring out that many don't want to hear. Eminem creates his music as a hobby... he hates beng famous! it may be trash to you, but... Jewel is probably trash to some people.
