All I said was that she is a human being, like the rest of us. I don't see her as some sort of super-human being. As a person, she has all my appreciation for her work. No, I'm not a "fan". I don't idolize her. I used to, and after doing some personal reflection, came to my conclusions. I am still on the list, I am still an EDA, but my interpretation to what being an EDA is is just slightly different. I'll be happy to elaborate on that for any of you who might be interested. But I don't think I in any way insulted or bashed. ~Abby. > charlie > > > From: Abigail Greif > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: [EDA] something much more important. > Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 14:00:32 -0800 (PST) > > Ok. That is probably because the look of a person didn't matter as much then as it does today (few people had a tv, videos were very simple...), and also the "standards" in beauty were different. And also, the good looking thing is mostly only true in the pop/soul/r&b/country music business. It is not that strong in other genre. of course, I'm in europe, so things might be different here. I have two words for you guys that think looks makes fans. Janis Joplin. Want two more. Melissa Etheridge. You tell me that their fan base is made up of all guys that are in love with them. Did Janis Joplin make it into the Music Hall Of Fame with her looks? Let's be sensible. "POP" music relies on looks. Not real music. Jewel is real music and will be legendary if it isn't already. Britney, Christina and the Backstreet Boys will be playing at the horse tracks with Debbie Gibson, Tiffany and New Kids on the Block real soon. "Looks do not create legends". In fact, if you look back at some of the most legendary singers and musicians they weren't good looking at all. Was Jimmie Hendrix a sexual icon? Was Jerry Garcia posted on every girls wall? We, as Jewel fans, just happen to get the best of both worlds. She's beautiful and extremely talented but we're not staring at the CD that's playing. It evokes emotion and hits a certain nerve that, regardless of who sang the song and what they looked like, you would listen to. It doesn't take a poster and plastic surgery to make me listen. If the perverted theory were true then I guess men watch football or baseball because we're all sexually repressed homosexuals. Our likes and dislikes may have different bases and it may be true that "some" of you have nothing better to do than stare at Jewels breasts instead of listening to the song so then it would hold true that looks make fans . . . for you. Don't speak for me and tell me I like what I like because I want to have sex with it. I'm a heterosexual male who likes music and perfectly happy in my masculinity that I don't have to use "she's hot" as an excuse to listen to her music so I don't feel like a wimp in front of my big! jock friends. In fact they resp ect the fact that I like what I like and don't make excuses for it. Some of you should try that some day. If somebody asks "what are you listening to" say with all honesty and dignity "Jewel". Don't turn it down or pretend like you don't know how that got on your radio. You like Jewel. It's okay. The bottom line is that sex does not control all of our emotions. Same thing holds true for sexual inadequacy. If you feel like you have a problem there's 800 numbers for that, not the EDA list. Juel does deserve alot of respect. She sure does deserve alot more than some people. Given the recent debate over nude pics and Valentine's Day, I thought maybe we should all discuss how our lives would be different if Jewel had never come into our lives. What if she was never "discovered" at Java Joe's? Then she wouldn't have influenced all of our lives, which means no discussion list, no introductions to good/new music, no email buds to chat with, etc. I personally would never have given female artists a listen if it wasn't for Jewel. She really opened me up to the great songwriting of Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morrisette and Fiona Apple. And the funny thing is that I was turned on to Jewel by listening to her being played over the stereo system at a coffeeshop in La Jolla. I thought that "Pieces of You" was a brave and thought-provoking song, while "Adrian" was a step back to the time that songs actually told stories. Both were good enough to buy the cd and check out her live shows, which are another experience entirely. I'll never forget those sold out shows at Java Joe's that ended up in the parking lot. Long story... I've also been emailing back and forth with a few people on this list since I joined (Hi Steph and Bill!), who've turned out to be very good conversationalists. We go back and forth philsophizing, theorizing and speculating. I can't get this kind of everyday conversation in my industry. As you can see, Jewel's been really influential on my life without actually ever having met her, which I'm sure she has been with all of you. How would your lives be different if it wasn't for Jewel?
