However, in the line from "Kiss the Flame" the more usual meaning of "casualty" is very appropriate: "There are people selling thoughtlessness with such casualty": with such harm and injury, resulting from thoughtlessness. This is a pretty common Jewel theme. But the idea of "casualness" is also there, so she gets both meanings with one word, which gives the phrase greater strength. If there is a question from this song it's the next line: "wherefore art thou Romeo?Where have all the brave men gone?" Does she really mean "wherefore", that is, "why", as Shakespeare did? The following "where" makes me think Jewel might have been thinking "Where are you, Romeo?" rather than "Why are you Romeo?" (Why do you have the name Romeo?). But the Romeo reference is important in the song, as the image of the true lover, one of the brave men who know their own heart to whom she would belong (another Jewel theme: "Own me"). So a bit of poetic licence here is fine. It's a great song, with a strong message. Take care, Barry Howarth PS I don't think "the faceless, the unnamed" is the Devil, although "these pilgrims, these puritans, these thieves" might. . ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 21:02:51 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel-digest V6 #45 In a message dated 2/7/01 6:34:29 PM Eastern Standard Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > Here is the breakdown on the Kurt Loder interview for MTV.
