We do the age/locale sur vey about this time each year. It'll be coming soon. I enjoyed the show, other than the fact of the screaming throughout much of the show. The best part of the actual concert, was when Jewel came out for her encore. She did it acoustic without backup. And there was a much smaller group of people who stuck around. The fans who stuck around were not screaming, and you could actually understand what Jewel was singing at this point. As it was, Chastain Park is not the best place to hold an outdoor concert, the acoustics aren't the greatest. But when everyone gathered in close to the front, at the end, the show actually went up a notch. Because you could hear what she was singing, as well as see what she was doing. You didn't have screaming going on, and you didn't have to many people jumping up and down. Dancing I cann undertstand, but just jumping up and down is not dancing. And that is one thing I am disappointed in. I would >much rather hear the artists than some loud pitched fan screaming at the top >of their lungs the entire way through. I could not agree more with Dan (ya been hiding way too long Danny boy). The last time I saw Jewel in concert was in March of 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. The seats were off to the side in the balcony. Rotten acoustics up there, but it was the two gals behind me that NEVER SHUT UP ONCE during the entire show that prevented me from hearing one damn word Jewel sang. And they were not even screaming, just talking loudly. I mean it, if they had been screaming as I see occurring at many shows, I'd now be known as "The New Boston Strangler". Cheering/screaming at certain concerts are of course expected as they are not distracting and are the norm...even during some Jewel numbers it slightly palatable...but when she's singing an acoustic number that's a quieter song, I do not want to hear some bozo screaming "I LOVE YOU JEWEL!!" at the top of his lungs. Subject: FW: [EDA] EDA Age Range I believe last time we did this the average age was something around 21-22? Does this sound even close Mike? I would venture to say it's gone up slighty since then, mainly since Jewel is a bit older and caters more to an older audience I think than she did say back in 1995...when *she* was 5 years younger as well. Comparing her being 21, to 26 now. My guess would be about 23 now. Anyone else care to make some guess? I think the average *posting* age is much younger, however. I think the older folks tend to lurk more than the younger ones. For regular or semi-regular posting, I'd say 18-19 is the average age. For a high and low age...I'll say 12 is the youngest, 62, the highest. :-) A complete guess of course...haha. Derrick PS...I've been wondering, how does the ages of the list members get discovered? I don't remember putting my age down anywhere when I joined. So how would anyone get this info? Other than volunteering, which of course wouldn't yield an accurate survey. > ---------- > From: EDAngel1014@aol.com[SMTP:EDAngel1014@aol.com] > Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2001 9:55 AM > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: Re: [EDA] EDA Age Range > > i agree! Of course, it is hard to tell from a post how old someone is really. I am 21 yrs old with my birthday in May approximately 11 days before Jewel's. That would just about go along with your hypothesis. Hello everyone, I'm new to the digest and well, this is my first post, here is some thoughts I had while I was reading the digest #19. How can you measure the level of a fan ? the power of it ? the admiration ? or the feelings that person have for the one he/she is fan of ? I think it will be impossible, every single person out there loves Jewel in their own way, every single person have a different way of being a fan, my way of being a fan is simply letting her music into my heart, and feeling every second of it, being a fan of her is admiring the honesty she posses and the most important part of it, sharing it to the world, the power of her words, the sweetness of her voice... Jewel have touched me in so many ways, that sometimes I even feel impressed, she have that gift, to make it all ok, or at least she try, she reached me with her songs, with her powerful sense of honesty in everything she have done, with her books, with her concerts (that I could only see in MuchMusic) since she haven't come here (Venezuela). Yes, I do have every single CD she released, every single CD she released, both books, the video, the promo albums, the calendar, I bought so many items on the auction she did last year, I have posters, I have 21 different versions of my fave song from her (Foolish Games) and I also have 53 Live shows, but how does that qualify me as a fan ? or how does that give me a rank of fan ? It simply can't. We like and share a wonderful thing, jewel itself, I think we will need to enjoy her in every sense, not fight or debate about who is the #1 Fan, cause such thing does not exist, we ALL ARE THE #1 FANS, together, as a group. And I don't need to be recognize for the effort and the following I've done to jewel, because I already know she is oh so very grateful of all her fans, that have kept her going, and I know, I'm included there, and so do you all ! Thanks for the time, and sorry about the english typo's, I'm Latin American and it gets a bit hard :) The Charmed Angel Antonio Miquilena Venezuela ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 10:00:46 -0800 (PST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Hotel=20Angel?= Subject: [EDA] Fans and cheering at Concerts Hi! I can understand the cheering after and before a song... I've never seen Jewel live, but from the tapes I have, I find it cool when there is a huge cheer when she's about to sing a hit song like Foolish Games, but then, very politely, everyone shuts up as Jewel starts to sing... I also find it cool to cheer when Jewel does something amazing with her voice during a song... like the long Breaking my H E A R T......................... in Foolish Games... and I find it cool to cheer because that singing part was so amazing that it needed recognition... And I obviously find it cool to cheer between songs and after a song is finished... BUT I CONSIDER IT RUDE when people start shouting or talking loudly while Jewel is singing, and even more rude when we are talking about a quiet song. The Jewel Rocks the Paradise tape is one of the best examples I can find, for those people who don't have the tape: when Jewel is about to sign Fat Boy (Fragile Flame) she talks about how a guy just killed himself in her hotel, and she's talking about her friend Edward who killed himself because he thought no one could love him because he was fat and she sings Fat Boy as an eulogy for him, obviously this is a very hard time for Jewel, where she is opening up herself and telling very intimate stuff I've never heard other artist tell, and the audience *VERY RUDELY* is shouting "YODEL! YODEL! YODEL!" I mean... how rude is that? Jewel even says: "A guy just killed himself... we'll yodel later". I believe the people shouting "YODEL!" were very selfish and didn't know how to appreciate that special moment, both for Jewel and her fans! She also has to tell people to please shut up as she can't sing! My God! That's so rude from the audience! Also, just before the song Amen (in the same tape) Jewel tells how she had this toll-free number and that she heard one message from a guy that had been locked up in his room for over 6 days because he was trying to leave heroine... the guy continuosly heard Amen and said to himself "my flesh isn't hell", and so Jewel dedicates "Amen" to him... just before Jewel sings 'Amen', after telling the story, there is a pause... and all I could hear are people screaming the names of other songs they want Jewel to sing. That is so rude, so selfish, so stupid and so ignorant (...they even shout "YODEL!" again...), I'm sorry but I strongly believe it is... I mean, Jewel just dedicated the song to a guy, and she hasn't even started singing it, and the audience is shouting the names of other songs... Have they even stop and thought about how Jewel would feel? It's like they are rejecting 'Amen' and the intimate story she told! In her position, I would have felt very hurt! I remember during the Spirit Tour era, a lot of people complaint that Jewel was not as chatty as before, and not chatty at all... Well, if that is what she receives for being chatty and intimate, then guess why she wasn't like that! Maybe she felt that could happen again, as the Spirit Tour gigs were very large... Maybe she feels people care more about her music than herself and her stories... so she shuts up and gives the audience what they want! Maybe people were talking so loud and shouting, that she felt maybe not many would hear her talk... Well... just my thoughts... I hope I didn't piss anyone, but I just can't keep my mouth shut with after what happened at the Jewel Rocks The Paradise... But also, we have to take into consideration that during concerts people are so excited of seeing Jewel that they forget things like the one I've mentioned before... It's natural, it's normal... but it's a big mistake, and I think we should keep that in mind when going to another Jewel concert. Take care, Mirko P.S.- I remember when I went to the 'Shakira' concert, that when she sang a song that was not in any of her albums, and I think it wasn't even hers (...it made me remind me of Jewel singing Per La Gloria De L'adorarvi... which I love), people start shouting and shouting and telling her to sing another song... I really felt sorry for her... Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
