NY DAILY NEWS/MITCHELL FINK.... One of Jewel's big hits was titled "Hands" b and now it turns out she's actually hand-y. In a recent appearance on Bill Maher's ABC-TV late-night show, "Politically Incorrect," the pop singer overcame her anxiety about debating politics in a unique way b she used her hands as crib sheets. Jewel was on the show Nov. 8, the night after the presidential election. She joined panelists Laura Innes from "ER," Jason Alexander of "Seinfeld" fame and conservative radio host Dennis Prager. During the taping, the pop singer remained relatively quiet, according to Mark Boal, who wrote a profile of Maher for the February issue of Brill's Content. But, reported Boal, when the conversation turned to the issue of African-Americans and values, Jewel perked up. "Jewel is looking at her hands," wrote Boal, "and from the audience, where I'm standing next to a security guard, I see a black blur, the suggestion of ink on flesh, but I can't be sure. Later, I review the tape over and over and finally it becomes clear: Jewel had notes written on her hand." Boal used Jewel's cheat sheet as a jumping-off point to discuss the potential danger of celebrities moonlighting as political commentators. A rep for Jewel had no comment. Boal did praise Maher for being able to bridge the gap between celebrities and politics, a skill that makes "Politically Incorrect" successful. Maher never commented or joked about the writing on Jewel's hands. Concluded Boal: Maher "is gentle with celebrities." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2001 15:31:19 -0500 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: [EDA] [OAC] top CDs of 2000 Stuff that's damned good: 9. (pink is her favorite color ya know!);) today i am going to put a white layette on her with little animals all over it. with some yellow fluffy socks. i think she like her fluffy socks!! well dr. walsman started putting compreesion(very gentle) on olivias arm with the vascular malformatio and her blood results were better!!!!! so God is answereing our prayers. the only pediatric dermatologist in indy is coming today to look at her arm. and tomorrow a surgeon is coming to look. the docotr said they might not want to do anything because of olivias size. which is unbeleivable, because if somethinig tis not done soon, my daughter could die. the temporary fixes wil not last long. so please, if you have any resources for this, hELP!! does anyone know any pediatric surgeons who specialize in removal of vascular malformations on infants? ANTHING or ANYONE would be graet comfort. my sweet angel has progressed so much, and i am in shock that this has come up. they were just taalking about us being able to ake her home soon. then the net day, theyre telling us her bloodwrk is falling, and her birthmark could be fatal. i pray my litle stinker keeps fighting!! she has fought so long already!! shes not going anywhere but to mommys arms!! i thank all of you for your support and prayers, and hope we can all just even give a little xtra effort in prayer for our angel. it is by far the greatest gift i can ask for. we love you aLL< AND APPRECIATE YOUR HELP GREATLY!!!!!!!!!see ya soon, love michelle and olivia Go Pacers!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2001 12:35:21 -0500 (EST) From: "Amy C. Phillips" Subject: [EDA] the inevitable sellout question on this list... I just have a comment to make......aside from all the Christianity discussions (which makes me wonder, those who somehow oppse whatever Jewel believes in, why do you even think you have the right to comment about her religious beliefs? I'm sorry, I thought that was a personal thing...). Anways, Jewel a sell out? Let's not get into the Spirit-like discussion again. In recent times, did she not write things such as Violet Eyes, Break Me, Stephenville, Shadows Play, and Serve the Ego? In MY eyes, these songs aren't exactly conforming to what "sell-out" criteria would be...and gosh darn it, I like all the songs! To everyone who still appreciates Jewel's faithfulness to her music and courage not not necessarily stay with the exact same thing all the time...yea for you! amy *the raindrop angel* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2001 17:58:21 -0800 (PST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Hotel=20Angel?= Subject: [EDA] Jewel's Present Hi! I've been an EDA about one year ago, and I've never participated in the Jewel present thing... so I wanted to know a little more about it. I was wondering if any of you was kind enough to answer me these questions: Where do you send the present? How do you make the EDAs agree on what it is going to be? How are you sure that Jewel gets the present? Do you get any answer from Jewel thanking the EDAs for the present? Thanks, Mirko *the angel from miraflores, lima, peru, south america* Yahoo! Hi angels! I was watching the 'A Life Uncommon' video, and I noticed that in the "Home Life" section, they start filming Jewel while singing "Gloria" in her San Diego House in 1996 (that's what the video says...). What got me confused was that in Joy: A Holiday Collection, the credits for Gloria say that the song was written in 1999... so... what do you think? Another funny thing, I don't know if you've noticed, but I thought it was funny, when Jewel is singing Summer Home In Your Arms in the tour bus with Atz & Steve, she starts singing the lyrics of Studies in Love #12, she says "The doorway frames" but with the melody of Summer home in your arms... she keeps singing, but then she realises that the lyrics don't match the melody and then she starts singing the REAL lyrics of Summer Home in Your Arms ("You take your coat off and put it on the floor"...). Has anyone else noticed that? // I'm writing in response to the Jewel sell out discussion post by Lucas Holt, the guy who said that he misses the old Jewel and her raw sound... ...I agree that Spirit lacked that... but you can't expect JOY to have a raw sound because IT'S A CHRISTMAS ALBUM!!!! It's not Jewel stuff!!!! An orchestra was an excellent way to portray the Christmas Spirit, and I think if the album was wholy acoustic, the feeling would not have been the same... THAT'S HOW CHRISTMAS MUSIC IS... you can't expect it to sound raw as Jewel! Also, Jewel is not a sell out by doing JOY... she always said she LOVED singing Christmas songs... so why not release a CHRISTMAS RECORD... it sounds good, doesn't it? Jewel was just having fun, and not exploiting Christmas to get some money as some of you say... ...Also, about the "old" Jewel stuff... I think we have to wait until the next record to make our own judgements... we all know Jewel is playing more folky and more acoustic, unlike the Spirit era... so just wait... and BTW... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Foolish Games Radio Edit!!! ...Also, I think that seeing or hearing Jewel live is so great, and we can expect the live version of songs to be the same as her album versions... it would be boring that way! I like the way she changes the way she sings the song in her live performances! ...and I agree with Charlie... Mirko *the angel from miraflores, lima, peru, south america* Yahoo!
