AND I agree that many people simply dislike her because it's fashionable to immediately discredit anyone who tries to crossover. Although some people really should stick to what they do best :o) Anyhow, even I agree with all those things I just stated. I understand that maybe if this is one person they may have something against her. But I think it's really ridicules to get angry whenever someone gives Jewel a bad review. Not everyone likes her type of writing. Not everyone is going to find her drawings artistic. Just because she gets a bad review does NOT mean they didn't read her work or it's personal or they just hate crossovers. Perhaps (and maybe I'm going out on a limb here) they just did not like her work. Bad reviews are a part of the industry that she is in. Jewel knows that, other authors and artists know that. Everyone will get a bad review by someone, at some time. WHO CARES? It's one opinion. And it's only as valid as the public or fans make it. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 19:51:06 -0800 From: "Ronald I. Geez! Guess it could've been worse! Anyway, a few weeks ago, Ah was in the supermarket with my mom, and Ah could've sworn Ah saw our beloved Jewel on the cover of that magazine Jane! Pieces Of You by you-know-who. The very first album that really hit me, and made me listen to the lyrics. Jewel was the most original, passionate, beautiful and inspirational songstress around. And in some aspects, she still is. 2. To Venus And Back by Tori Amos. The very first album I ever bought of Tori's, and I was hooked, straight away. She has the most original sound I have ever heard. Plus she writes and produces her own work, and I love that in a musician. 3. From The Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos. Admittedly, the least of my favourites at first. But as I started listening to the music, I fell in love. It has more piano than TVAB, but still a big rock edge. I love it! 4. Throwing Copper by Live. I think this was one of the very first CDs I ever bought. My very first rock CD, anyway. Of course, I loved 'Lightning Crashes' before I bought the album, it always made me cry. But then I grew to love every other single song on the album. It's an addictive record! 5. Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrissette. I was a very angry person when I bought this record. I hated life and everyone in it (I still do, a bit) and her lyrics and hard rock sound were enough to make me hate it even more. It sort of let some of my frustration out at the world. It's become symbolic. 6. Empire Records (soundtrack). My favourite movie and one of my favourite soundtracks. For some reason I always forget to mention ER when I list my fave. movies. 7. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. I fell in love with Sarah after hearing 'Building A Mystery' on Channel [V] and literally raced out to buy the single. I wanted to buy the album, so I looked in every record store and none of them had FTE. I was about to give up and spend my money on Paula Cole, when my sister said we were going to another CD store. And there FTE was. So I immediately bought it. 8. Growing Pains by Bille Myers. My [ex] flatmate had this CD and she was always playing it. I adore the first three songs, then it sort of gets boring (but not much!). Anyway, turns out I stole the CD unknowingly. Yay! 9. The Globe Sessions by Sheryl Crow. Now, I'm not usually one for country, but I make every exception for Sheryl. I own all her CDs, but Globe Sessions is the only one that can be played over and over again. I absolutely love it! I love her voice, I love the music, everything! 10. Great Expectations (soundtrack). I mainly bought this for Tori Amos, but every other song on there is just beautiful, some haunting. Except for 'here comes success'. But anyway, the others are always repeated consistently. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 11:01:48 EST From: Jdstock0628@aol.com Subject: [EDA] John Tesh Show Did anyone hear Jewel on The John Tesh radio show...I was driving to work and switched from NPR to a music station and heard Hands. That was taken a tiny bit out of context, what I meant by that was that Jewel writes her own song lyrics, and like I said lyrics aren't that much different from poetry. Britney Spears *sings* she doesn't write her own songs, therefore it would be more laughable if Britney Spears did it, then for Jewel to do it. That's not being close-minded at all....I'm not saying Britney Spears writing would suck - that wasn't the point of my statement. I'm not judging her writing, because I haven't read anything she's written - if she has written anything that is available to be read, right now. Also, this isn't about people enjoying Jewel's music, or whether not not her writing is good - it's about the fact that it's more plausible for Jewel to write than Britney Spears considering the differences in their careers, and the fact that people *do* feel the same way about both Jewel and Britney without considering the major differences in their careers. That was what I was trying to say. > > The statement you made above (and I am sure other people have thought it, > including myself) is narrow minded. A lot of people think this : "it is a > laugh Jewel tried writing a book of prose about her life (And I heard there > are some really stupid pictures in it too!)." Like I said, it's not narrow minded, it's narrow minded of you to *assume* that's what I meant, and then come here and subtly insult me. I also think it's rather assumptious for you to speak for "a lot of people", regarding whether or not they believe what I said was narrow minded *or* about what th ey think about he book, when you can only speak for yourself. > > SO...I guess the bottom line is WHO CARES if someone gave her a bad reveiw, > sometimes they are ligit...for example...when people reviewed Spirit and said > it was over produced compared to Peices of You. Was it not over produced > compared to POY? But OH NO! Someone said something "bad" about Jewel, so we > all have to rush to her aid. I was not rushing to her aid, and not *once* did I make a statement that said I cared a great deal about the bad review, or that I thought the review was wrong, I only gave reasons as to why some people *might* give bad reviews in that specific magazine *continuously*, and on that point, (and please note the sarcasm here) WHO CARES about whether not you think something is legit, or if someone is being narrow minded. It's not up to you to judge, and last time I checked this was a JEWEL DISCUSSION list, therefore, I don't think you should go around criticizing my comments, and labelling me, when I have just as much right to my opinion as to whether or not it's right for people to criticize Jewel (which I wasn't doing in the first place as I pointed out) as you do. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #456 ***************************
