I think "but" would be > better. I don't see " I could only laugh in yellow" as a consequence > ("so") of "Lavender haunted you". I can see in a way what you mean, but I don't understand why you would come to that conclusion (not that I have to!). In my opinion, I could laugh in yellow *is* a consequence of lavender haunting him, that is why she could only laugh in yellow - because lavender haunted him, therefore it is a consequence of the lavender haunting him. To me, "but" makes less sense than "so" just because I thought she was saying for whatever reason that "Lavender haunted him" (I've enjoyed everyone else's interpretations and agree with a lot of them, so I'm not going to analyse that) "so" she could only laugh in yellow, she's saying that because lavender haunted him, she was forced to laugh in yellow as a consequence of that, I see that "so" leads to this place, whereas "but" would be a contradiction - lavender haunted you "but" I could only laugh in yellow would be a contradicting to her earlier statement, since she was saying she only laughed in yellow because the lavender haunted him, and "but" is in most cases followed by something that contradicts the aforementioned, whereas I dont' see her trying to contradict, but rather tell of the consequence of lavender haunting him. For example of the two: My mother hates blue vests, so I had to buy her a purple one. *or* My mother hates blue vests, but I had to buy her a purple one. That's a contradiction since since we know her mother hates blue vests - so "but" doesn't fit in, because she would naturally choose a different colour. "So" leads to the consequence of her mother hating blue vests - buying her a purple one, instead. I see but fitting in a sentence more like: My mother hates blue, but I love it. (She's contradicting her mom) or My mother hates blue, but her bathroom is done completely in that colour! (Her mother contradicting herself) or in a completely different situation: My boyfriend is a jerk, but I still love him. Being as those are "contradicting" what was said before the but. >Jewel is a spontaneous writer and > has such incredible talent but this means she sometimes is sloppy in > her composition and this is probably an example (and there are lots > of others: for example, in "Marital Carnival" she clearly means > "carousel", not carnival; and in "Life is a Great Big Mystery Show", > "movie show" would make better sense, I think). This is her main > problem as a poet for me. I'm sorry, but I don't see how that can be a problem as a poet for you. I'm a published poet myself, and I *love* the way that Jewel chooses to word her lyrics in most of her songs. I don't find it sloppy at all. It's as if you are looking at poetry as some kind of text-book way of writing, and not as an expression of herself/yourself. I see her expressing herself in her songs, and although it may not always make sense to you or me, I think she's very particular in how she words things, and it's an expression of her that doesn't necessarily have to fit what you are I would think "makes more sense", or fit into some kind of text book idea of the way poetry and lyrics should be written. I don't think you can honestly say she clearly means anything else in her songs and lyrics other than what she's written, because it's all a matter of what she wants to express, and it whatever words or manner she chooses to use to make that expression, not what would make more sense, in a lyrical or actual way, but what she's choosing to say from the heart . I know sometimes when I wrote poetry, I find that things just "come" out of me, and don't have to make sense in a written way - but are metaphorical, symbolic, or just an expression of the way I feel, which other people may not understand, but the beauty of poetry to me, is that it doesn't have to fit into some sort of mold that everyone can understand - sometimes I'd rather not have it "make sense", or have it explained to me, I'd like to just enjoy it, and use those words in whatever way I wish - whether or not my interpretation is right, it's something for thought. I mean, who wants to read (or hear in this case) something that's so straight forward you don't have to put any thought into trying to understand it, or can't choose to take what you what from it, and enjoy it in your own way? Anyways, those are just my thoughts :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 18:04:20 -0500 From: "Scott Evans" Subject: [EDA] jewel on rosie I just caught a great video of Jewel's recent appearance on Rosie.. I must say that even though the performance of Face of Love was kind of sucky, she was great and looked more beautiful than I've seen in a long time.. She looks great with her hair pulled back.. So if you can find a copy from someone, get it.. (Don't ask me... I don't have it..) If you have a high-speed internet line, you can get the video from piecesofjewel.com.. Most of you will have to download a plug-in first though.. scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME. I discovered most of them from my sister in the past couple of years.. Seeing as I'm 14 (15 on Jan. 12), these could also be counted as my favorite all-time CDs =) ANI DIFRANCO - Living In Clip: Okay, it's technically a double live CD, but we'll count it as one.. Shhhh ;-).. All of her best stuff up to that point is included in mindblowing versions that ususally surpass the studio albums.. "Gravel" rocks the house, "Untouchable Face" is amazing.. Hopefully Ani will release another live album soon, seeing as how she has had many gems created since then.. "Fuel," "Jukebox," "Soft Shoulder," "To The Teeth".. The list is endless.. TORI AMOS - To Venus And Back: Another live CD, packaged in a two-CD set with a disc full of new tracks.. I was trying to decide which album to use, but I settled on this one because not only does it include live versions of her best songs, like "Precious Things" and "Cornflake Girl," but also great new tracks like "Bliss" and "1000 Oceans".. MELISSA ETHERIDGE - Your Little Secret: Melissa, Melissa, Melissa.. She can do no wrong.. Every song on every CD by her has been amazing.. This CD includes the mind-blowing title track (which was my favorite for months), the captivating "Nowhere To Go," and the heart-wrenching "I Want To Come Over".. These among a ptach of other great songs.. JEWEL - Spirit: While Pieces of You had great tracks, I feel that Jewel's voice and the arrangements didn't mature enough, which is why I always prefer live versions of the songs to the album.. I really feel that Spirit is an underappreciated gem.. Fans scream that its too polished, too poppy, and I don't see that at all.. The songs are great, her voice is superb.. It's an amazing album.. THE INDIGO GIRLS - 1200 Curfews: All of the IGs best songs are included on this record, which is saying a lot.. They have the most amazing, unique sound of any group out there.. Folky, catchy, every song is amazingly listenable.. "Least Complicated," Joni Mitchell's "River," and, of course, the perfect "Galileo" and "Closer To Fine".. SHERYL CROW - The Globe Sessions: This album made me OBSESSED with Sheryl for a good long while, and I still love her and it.. It's pure country-folk-rock perfection.. Every song on this record is perfect.. Every song.. "Anything But Down," with its soul-baring lyrics and her pain-laced voice.. "My Favorite Mistake," with its beautiful guitar.. "The Difficult Kind," with her honey-dripping voice flowing over light, pretty guitar.. "It Don't Hurt," probably the most unique breakup song ever.. FIONA APPLE - When The Pawn: This CD blew my mind.. It had me worshipping at the feet of Fiona.. Her piano playing is unrivaled by most modern artists, her sultry voice comparable to Billie Holiday.. "Limp" was a huge captivating ball of energy.. "Get Gone" is a great blow-off song.. "On The Bound" is a deep, catchy song.. Definitely recommended.. POE - Hello: This is probably one of the best slightly-alternative rock albums of the decade.. Every song is a beautiful multi-layered piece of heaven".. "Trigger Happy Jack," "Angry Johnny," the title track.. And every track is very, very catchy.. SARAH MCLACHLAN - Mirrorball: I chose Sarah's live album because it includes the better songs from both Surfacing and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.. "Adia," "Possession," "Ice Cream," "Building A Mystery," "Angel".. They're all here.. JOAN OSBORNE - Relish: I overlooked this one for a while.. Got it for "One Of Us" when I was 9 or so and set it aside for years.. It's great.. "One Of Us" is still a great, refreshing song.. "St. Theresa" is beautiful, with the mandolin making a great impression on the song.. (Anyone remember the video for "St. Theresa"? It was AMAZING).. Joan is great.. So's the album.. Pick it up.. Whew.. There they are.. =) scott.evans [[crazy is just YOU and ME.
