Howdy from Dixie, Now, it seems to me that there has been this one same problem popping up time and time again...some of you people on this list forget that Jewel isn't doing the things she does to please you. True, she DOES enjoy touching our lives with her music and such, but it is NOT her dedication. We owe it to her to encourage and SUPPORT her in what she does. Why do we owe her? For giving us such a wonderful gift, time and time again. Hell, she gives more than most I've ever known. So let's get one thing straight...the obligation isn't her's, it's ours. I know I owe her a good bit. "Craziness that is you!" -- JS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 20:32:27 -0700 From: "Scholastic Angel" <70030.225@compuserve.com> Subject: [EDA] Christmas songs I want to weigh in on the seasonal question of Jewel doing Christmas songs. On the standard numbers, I had the mixed reactions of "why bother (there are so many finely crafted versions out there, and so many unpublished Jewel originals)" and "what a treat to have an experience similar to having someone who is like a family friend coming over to sing familiar tunes, some straight & some with twists". The latter has prevailed, here is what solidified it for me: my mother has sung "O, Holy Night" solo in various church settings, indoors & out, many Christmases during my youth and later. She has a beautiful clear voice, the song is melodic and dramatic, and the many experiences have melded into one, etched in my memory as the quintessential Christmas family moments. And there, on this tape of Jewel's, is this voice that, in this one anyway, is singing just like my mother this achingly beautiful song. I can barely keep the car driving straight the first time hearing it. Everyone will have their own experience of it, born of their temperament and their past. Perhaps others will identify with this. Not to give the wrong impression, my mother is quite alive, vibrant and active, as is my father. She is not young anymore (with which she has not fully made her peace, hardly daring to acknowledge that she has a 21 year old grandson). I am not, either, reconciled to their inevitable and too too soon deaths. "The young may die, the old must die." I think I will look them up this week, they are not far . . . One other reflection on the standard fare. I have surmised (but do not know) that Jewel sings these traditional songs to please an audience and because they're fun or beautiful, and perhaps because she wants people to think on spiritual things in general, but not because her faith is literally mirrored by them. Is this likely correct? It has bothered me, for a reason different than might be expected. I have neither the faith proposed in these songs nor that which Jewel appears to allude to in her own work. But I am often looking. When the author of the latter sings the former, it muddies the waters for me. Finally, I'm truly pleased she put some works of her own composition on. Back when, not so long ago, her commercial work was all I knew, it was good to have her visible repertoire expand some. Overall, I'm glad she did the album. "God is watching us, from a distance." While it's not uncommon for artists to produce -- Sheryl Crow did, Sophie B. Hawkins did it, Emm Gryner did it -- Jewel seems to do the singing, songwriting and guitar playing and leave the producing and engineering to others. The production credits on _Spirit_ go to Peter Collins and Patrick Leonard. Well I thought I would share my Jewel anecdote thing. First of all I was at a Girl Scout Camp and one of the counseler's played guitar. These 2 girls requested her to play YWMFM. The same song was requested 20 other times the whole week and everyone got sick of it besides me and those girls. Also I remember my English teacher playing Spirit before class, but that's not really an intresting story. On another note, I just want to share a little something here. A couple days back my mom and I were watching the local news on t.v. The news team was joking around and my mother made the comment that they must be like family. Well my mom also commented her TOPS club (a weight loss program) was her second family. I chirped in, "Mom, just kinda like the EDA's are my second family too!" I mean I knew it was most likely wasn't Jewel, but it was worth a shot.... could easily delete the song if I hate it. So Anyway, I d/led the song and I fell in love with it... Its called "Wild Horses" and its a RollingStones cover.... its sung w/ a chick and a piano..... and its beautiful. Who's singing? Anyone know?
