(us poor New Zealander's had to wait to the 3rd week of November for it's release... *sniff sniff*) Wow, I was just blown away... I absolutely LOVED it! It's rare to read an autobiography that gets as personal as Jewel's does.. I love how her insights and perspectives on live and people are so unique! She really let you into her head ya know? I can't wait to read it again.. Oooh and I've been really into Jewel's country songs at the moment.. and it gave me an idea: It'd be really great to create a series of angelfood that concentrated on just one genre... like a tape or cd of all her Country songs (eg Don't wanna be loved by anybody but you; Have a little faith in me; Sweet sweet Angel (cowboy waltz) etc..) ... or Rock songs (LMJLMA, Everybody needs someone sometime, Down, etc) ... or Blues Songs (I got the blues more than you do blues; Let your tears fall baby, St. Louis Blues.. etc) ... or even a tape full of her sappiest love songs! What do ya think? I'd love to take on the job myself.. but I don't have any of the technology to do it :( Not to mention my computer is a bit behind the times now... it's a little ancient. Any thoughts or offers? And if they say Jewel is an 11x platinum that is by Their standards, and by selling that many cd's. They have a whole breakdown on how they do the figures, so check it out. kevin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 09:23:38 -0500 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] CDTD / Idea for new angelfood >It'd be really great to create a series of angelfood that > concentrated on just one genre... like a tape or cd of all her Country > songs (eg Don't wanna be loved by anybody but you; Have a little faith in > me; Sweet sweet Angel (cowboy waltz) etc..) > > ... or Rock songs (LMJLMA, Everybody needs someone sometime, Down, etc) Speaking of which.... I had started compiling a tape like that some time ago for a friend of mine, but never finished. I titled it "Rocker Girl".... I can keep working on it though if anyone is interested..... cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 08:07:33 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel-digest V5 #434 chris > > I'm afraid your figures are not quite correct. Pieces > Of You having gone 11-times platinum in the US > would probably have sold around 8 to 9 million > copies. it doesn't make any difference. when a store orders copies of an album they pay for it... that's why if you special order something from a store, often you have to pay a deposit. if it's a big store (HMV) you don't, because likely they'll sell it anyway.. but the reason record companies work in shipments and not actual sales is because the records they ship = the records THEY sell. > > Also her two previous releases Pieces Of You (1995) > > and Spirit (1998) have sold over 19 million copies > > combined! > > I'd dispute this figure, possibly somebody confusing > shipped versus sold cds and confusing the figures > for platinum in international markets. I wouldn't dispute this figure. Jewel has officially sold 20 million records worldwide. Record companies count in certifications, not in soundscan sales.. but it's certifications that show how much money they've made. It's an official figure released by Atlantic records and confirmed by Jewel. They gave her that huge diamond ring because she achieved such a huge feat. I don't know HOW you would dispute this figure.. but it's absolutely true.... and not only that, it makes sense. This about it. In the states (at the time this figure was announced) Pieces of You had sold 11 million and Spirit 3. That's 14 million. Joy had sold 1 million.. that's 15 million. Therefore Pieces and Spirit would had to have sold a COMBINED 5 million overseas. That's very possible. And since Spirit has since gone 4x platinum, the official figure is now 21 million. steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 12:57:23 -0800 (PST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Hotel=20Angel?= Subject: [EDA] Jewel anecdote Hi angels! As an anecdote, I can tell you a funny story. A friend just told me that in her old school they were doing an English Listening Exercise. They were given the lyrics to a song with some blank spaces, and the exercise consisted of filling those blank spaces by listening to the song. The task was done in groups and each group listened to a different song. My friend was set with a very pretty song called 'You Were Meant For Me' sung by a very nice girl with an angelic voice called Jewel! How funny, right? I just wish to hear Jewel songs in my English classes... it'll be kinda cool... but I'll kinda miss the Literature study for a while. Anyone of you has any more Jewel anecdotes to share? I was going to post this anyway tonight, since I just read the part about Jaque in Chasing Down The Dawn... Last year, my school's auditorium was being remodeled, so the drama department had to use the choir room. I was looking for something on the piano when I stumbled across the "Life Uncommon" lyrics. I screeched and went "Which choir is doing this?!" Mrs. Parker, our choir teacher, calmly explained to me that the teachers would be performing the song at our Equity con. The entire staff sang it, and it was lovely. Though they changed some of the lyrics, it was still very good. I must've been the only one in the audience singing along and knowing every word!:P Annyway.......... ~*Missy ~*The Film Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #435 ***************************
