Do you think Atlantic haven't already made a KILLING off Jewel!!!!!!! 20 million records worldwide isn't peanuts you know. Sure they've spent a lot promoting jewel.. but not all of it comes right out of their pocket. she's expected to make back half of what she spends making records.. if she doesn't it comes out of her pocket. but to be quite honest, they spend money on jewel because she generally makes it back. i mean we all know jewel isn't on a huge upswing right now... but people unfairly label Spirit a failure because it didn't sell 10 million copies. don't forget 10 million copies is not a NORMAL sales figure. that's absolutely HUGE. 4 million is also amazing. and 1 million for a christmas album is also really good. i mean look at the sort of average US sales figures for most established artists. Madonna averages like 3 million per record (although she has released records that have only gone platinum). people only sell 10 million when their style of music is "in". pieces of you happened during a sort of "women in music" lilith fad... and britney is selling huge now because we're in a whole pop thing (which is slowly being taken over by rap... which is a huge disaster in my view). Jewel hasn't made it mainstream in Europe.. but that's because Jewel doesn't write BRITPOP.... the majority of the artists that do well in Europe are crappy pop bands.. and like.. Radiohead. that's it. Jewel should continue to release whatever she wants to release, however uncommercial it may be. The likelihood is if she keeps doing that her fanbase will grow and she won't have to worry about being labelled a fad. if she establishes a large fanbase (which she's well on the way to doing) she'll always sell records. If Jewel releases a crappy pop album just so she can appeal to the an audience of predominantly bad taste (not you.. but judging from the charts in europe... musical QUALITY is not a concern for the average consumer).. she's going against everything she preaches (honestly, integrity etc etc). not that i'm arguing that jewel should quit atlantic and start her own label... i think atlantic has been good to her.. and i think it's been worth their while. but i think we needn't worry.. I don't think Jewel has any intentions of leaving atlantic.. she constantly expresses how much she appreciates the freedom they've given her. i just definitely think if she releases a generic pop album it'll be a huge step in the wrong direction. i mean WHO is going to accept jewel as a "pop star".... she's actually making some headway in that "respected artist with large fanbase so they don't have to rely on being 'the thing' and having radio hits" area.. and she should continue that. i mean look at dave matthews. he sells out 40 000 seat arenas every year simply because he has such a large fanbase. he doesn't do well on the radio... but he has a very devoted fan base. taht's what jewel should be striving for.. not pop superstardom that's completley fleeting anyway. steve steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 11:40:10 -0500 (EST) From: Cody26@webtv.net (Michelle Cody) Subject: [EDA] NJC: olivia-4 WEEKS OLD!!!!
