I think she was doing that with her hands not only b/c she is expressional, but she didn't have a guitar to play, so she still used them!!! All commercial. That's the reason those are the singles they pulled of POY and "commercialized" them. >and > I expect they'll now want to generate some profit from her after > spending millions promoting her. You don't think they've generated any profit off of her yet? Come on! She may not be the #1 best selling artist of all times, but she's sure as hell sold enough records to make Atlantic a lot of money. >Hopefully they'll release the > first Jewel pop record, I hope to god they don't. I don't want another Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, I don't want Jewel to resemble them in ANY way. I want more Jewel - and Jewel isn't about commercial pop like that stuff. I hear people complaining that Jewel's sold out - the biggest sell out would be for her to release some pop peice of crap just to get record sales - that's not what she's about, and that's not what she wants from what I can tell. She hated that part of the industry so why would she get on her hands and knees and and worship the industry now? She's got more than enough money (which just goes to prove that if *SHE* made that much money off her other records, so did Atlantic), so she doesn't need to sell her soul to the record executive pimps just to get rich. >so all the world will be able to enjoy > Jewel's fabulous voice. They already can without a pop release. You want her to release a peice of crap record just so she can get recognition from people that, frankly, I'm sure she doesn't WANT recognition from? If people aren't going to like her for who she is already, and her equisite talent that's already portrayed in her *own* style of music, why should she change just so more people can hear her? If she started singing pop crap like "Oops I did it again" I'd puke, and then I'd throw the CD out the window. There is *so* much stuff like that out there already, we don't need more, and especially not from someone like Jewel who shouldn't waste her talent trying to bribe 10 year old girls into liking her so she and her record company can make more money. Jewel has a lot of self-respect, and dignity, and I sure as hell doubt she'd throw that away just to attract more mindless pop-freaks to her music. So, hello all... Well, the only reading she actually did was to read about how Jacque (which I thought was pronounced Jack but apparently is said as Jackie) died. How morbid, I almost wanted to cry! Almost. After the performance I was waiting on line to get my copy of the book signed and I overheard the people in front saying, "I can't believe someone asked her to read that, I mean, it must have been pretty hard to print it on the book" and I was surprised, because I hadn't thought of it that way. But I was surprised by how composed she was reading the selection, not breaking down. I was amazed. She even helf-joked, "Thanks for giving me an easy thing to read". The interview was by a man from Rolling Stone. That enough was a big deal to me. I muttered "damn" as he was introduced. "Rolling Stone" is a big deal to me. He seemed to know a lot of the things in the book, so it wasn't like, "So, you lived in a van when you were eighteen? You lived in Alaska?" Actually, he did ask about Alaska, but it was much deeper into it, and she'd talk about gigs and everything. And there was talk about her relationship with her dad because we always hear Nedra this, Nedra that, not that I don't mind, but wouldn't her Dad feel left out? What else? Well, Noo Yawkers as we are, we refused to turn off our cell phones and not to take pictures. So the person next to me, well the one after, took a pic of Juel and the usher came and was like "If you do that one more time we'll take the camera" and then some man came and just asked for it right then and the person was like "No" (great...). So they got some high position lady to come and the person was like "I don't have anything" so they left the person alone. Behind me, were these really nice people who laughed heartily and were loud kinda but weren't too bad. Juel said something funny, and this little girl giggled and Juel asks who laughed so cutely, and the people behind are laughing, waiting for a response, so that makes her laugh which makes everyone laugh. (Did you get that?) Juel said her favorite song right now was Rosie and Mick and the person behind me said "Oh, YEAH" in approval and Juel thinks it's funny, "Oh YEAH, I haven't even released it". Hm. Also, Juel was talking about how she'd gotten 100,000 bucks and rented an expensive $1300/ month apartment, and the interviewer was like, "It's not to New Yorkers!" (especially that neighborhood, they're pretty rich on that side) Everyone laughs, haha, hoho, so funny. Anyway, she had been worried about saving money and everything and had been talking to her friend, and he was like, "What are you talking about, there'll be more coming" and she asked him "You mean there's more where that came from?" Then people were able to ask questions and someone brought up the Clearwater project and fundraising and raising awareness. So Nedra talked to us a little. Before everything started Nedra came and everyone was just staring like, "Omigod is that Nedra?" and I whispered (actually, I was pretty loud, my dad kept telling me to quiet down) "Dad, I think that's her mom" and he's like, naw, so I said "I told you!" I thought the HGH people had only worked in Honduras but Nedra was naming so many more places where they'd made a difference, so I was real happy. One girl was called on to ask a question and she's like, "Me?" Her voice trembled and she was sobbing and had to catch a breath while she asked her question, so Juel said "God I'm sorry to do this to you, but could you ask me the question again?" I didn't have a copy of the book, and the interview had ended and there were copies of the book, and my dad's like, "I'll buy you one", when just a few weeks ago he hadn't wanted to because it was 24 bucks. It was 50% off, but he denied that wasn't the reason. I was like, whatever. And then I wanted to go home, but my dad's like "get it signed!" So I sighed and I waited on line. I got there and I said hi, and she signed it so fast I only said thank you and left. She didn't even say hi back, I don't think. (Don't start fighting again though, she had already said she didn't have much time.) I wish I could have told her, "Guess what? I graduated in that interview hall. I've been on that stage too." My name is David. I live in the Denver area, am married with two children, one grown and one not, both at home. I work at a university doing and managing computer support, and sometimes as a mathematician or educator. With that background, and thinking way back to some years in a catholic seminary, I will take the nom de plume "The Scholastic Angel" (think scholasticism and Thomas Aquinas, the "Angelic Doctor", or, if you must, "How many angels can dance on the point of a very fine needle, without jostling one another?"). I find myself here because a year ago I read the Reader's Digest article (9-99) on Jewel. I was intrigued, and found a copy of "Pieces of You". And it grew on me. I liked the tunes, the voice(s), the lyrics as poetry and as statements or explorations. I found passion, hope & humanity there. So I've worked up to listening fairly regularly to what has been mass marketed: "Pieces of You", "Spirit", "Joy"; and more recently the nonmusical works: "A Night Without Armor", and "Chasing Down the Dawn". The only time and place usually available to me to listen is during a twice daily 30 minute commute, and, very lately, walking my daughter's dog, the snow crunching underneath as he tracks fox or prairie dog. I have taken up the habit of alternating an audio book (my tastes vary, the last two have been set on death row: Grisham's "The Chamber" and King's "The Green Mile"; coming up are a Rex Stout Nero Wolf mystery and Steinbeck's "Cannery Road") with works of Jewel. I drive an elderly Buick, 1981, with a low-fidelity cassette player (but I always buy Jewel's CDs as well as her tapes, looking toward the future). I read here recently that estimates of the current body of songs that Jewel has written range from 500 to 750 performed, and perhaps a thousand all together. This is both exhilarating and disheartening. I have access to only the 30 or so songs on her published albums. I do find myself hoping this group will have pointers to other resources. And indeed, since I wrote the above the EDA list has mentioned web sites where there are files of many other songs. Thank you! This too is both exciting for the wealth of new material, and sometimes disappointing in the technical quality of the sound (something like listening over a noisy phone line). Even under good conditions I need multiple hearings most times to parse musical sounds. I would urge those with a part in the process to do whatever is appropriate to not lose fidelity. And the just mentioned possibility of her releasing a CD next year is also good news. I am also interested in (although I might write a different list after I digest more of her work): - -Various arcana: What is an "impartial vow"? - -Mishearings: I certainly heard "they thought blue birds were too sad so they made them yellow" on the initial many listenings, not being much of a carpenter. And humorous, deliberate mishearings. And lyrics she changes. - -Philosophy: What does Jewel likely make of life in the face of certain death? What is the nature, basis and role of the faith she frequently refers to? Although this latter may be verboten on this list. - -Personality: Is Jewel a lusty wild thing or a sensitive & thoughtful angel - or some of both, as perhaps some of us are? - -Media: I suppose it's just a job to many, but insightful reviews of her artistic output seem rare. On a positive note, some of the items referenced on this list recently have shown some discernment - -Personal: How have her works moved me? Changed or grounded me? You? She brings me to tears. She lets me keep a song in my head. - -Related folks: Who is this Steve Polz? What about her father's music? - -Band: I like her accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. I also like piano. I generally don't need special effects. But, after working through the fan recordings, I do have a greater appreciation for production values, and for what her musicians bring to the experience. - -Live: Rumor is she's pretty exciting live, and sensitive to the audience. But I don't expect to ever see her in live performance, much less be able to offer her a decaf herbal tea. So I wish she would tilt more toward releasing additional recorded material. And I hope she continues sometimes playing small venues. - -Themes: Various imagery reappears in her work, such as rooms in a heart waiting for lightning. - -Consistency: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" (Thoreau, 1841), but still it can be worth pursuing. Can the author of "Let's run with the hunted, the untamed" feel no pang at participating in the butchering of cattle? - -Nitpicking: "Wherefore art thou, Romeo . . . " asks _why_ of the man, not "where". - -Philanthropy: I have contributed to the EDA/HGH/CW Christmas gift. But some of the HGH affiliates seem on the edge of irrational new age fuzziness (citing an example without reference, one alliance member wants to "to show how energy can be used to change DNA frequency toward a futuristic path of energy medicine that integrates science and spirit"). - -Ego: And I don't mean as a performer or artist per se, but rather the observation that a number of her lyrics are imbued with either an "I am right" or a "My needs are central" tint. I've been the one at the doorway "with nothing to say", and often I don't think "it'll be just fine". All fascinating. I want to watch her develop musically, and in other ways. Even though in one way I'm 20 years late in beginning, one does what can. And perhaps one can "find some rhythm in the madness". It's pleasant to join you for a while.
