She certain has enough cash to pay for the studio time and a big enough name to score a distribution deal, should she desire one. That'll mean no delays because her style of music isn't selling now, no arguing over obscure instruments she wants included, no worrying about singles and avoidance of all that general weasel sleaziness. Emm Gryner's had great success with Dead Daisy; I read recently that _Science Fair_ outsold her major-label release _Public_ (but don't have any numbers). The scene in 2000 is far different than it was in 1994; the Internet has had (and is having) a dramatic effect on the music industry. She can self-promote, distribute -- sell digital music, even. Wow, I haven't written here in a long time. Just saw Jewel sing Face Of Love on Rosie! I was surprised to hear that she wrote it specifically for the old Romeo & Juliet movie with Leonardo. When was that? 1995? I did a search for "Face Of Love" on lycos and see it's on the JewelStock tapes from 1996. Was that the first time she sang Face Of Love in public? Anyone know? Mike? MrBB? When at JewelStock and listening to the tapes, I always got the impression that she debuted it at JewelStock, but I am now very doubtful. MrBB can be the only true source of that info. I did an electronic search of the digests archives for "face of love" and found a post from 6 weeks before JewelStock from James Reach (talk about a name from the past) saying he had gotten a call from Lenedra asking him to post looking for lyrics......a heck, here's his post: >From: reach@fishnet.net (James Reach) >Date: Tue, 11 Jun 96 14:24:06 PDT >Subject: Lyrics Needed-Urgent! > >Jewel's Mom called me today. Jewel would like the lyrics to >the following songs for consideration on her new album, in >addition to the ones already in the archive. Thank you for >all your contributions, you are the greatest! Please >consider transcribing the below list right away. Thank you. > >Sometimes I'll Let Go >Love's a Hard Habit to Break >Money >Tough Girl >Fading Away >Face of Love Seems to me then that she must have debuted it live at some shows from early 1996. (none of my angelfood from that era has it on it) Yo Alan! Can ya help out with this one? Mike :-) P.S. The JewelStock version of Face Of Love is by far my favorite of it, then again, I've only heard maybe 6 versions, including today's on Rosie. None the less, something about it puts it heads above any other version I've heard, with the version from the Olivia Newton-John breast cancer special from the fall of 1996 being a run-away second place. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 11:42:58 -0500 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel on Rosie! Jewel debuted an earlier version of "Face Of Love", with a slightly different arrangement and an extra verse, on May 5th, 1996 at The Bomb Factory in Dallas, TX. (She was the support act for Jeff Buckley, which was another question asked recently.) That's the only concert performance of it prior to Jewelstock. And i went to the Steve Poltz show at the Casbah on Friday, it was so AWESOME!! Steve is just the Best! he is funny, cool, down to earth, and a great guy and musican. He told us he would come out after his set (he got pretty buzzed, not totally drunk, but a good buzz going...) and so he came out side to the dozen or more people that waited for him, gave every one a Hug, signed autographs posed for pictures, kissed the girls and a couple guys on the cheek, and just chatted with every one. This was so cool! Oh yeah and Doug Pettibone was there also with Steve! you all know him, he plays in the Jewel band. I rapped with him for a while too, Very cool people. Well if you all get a chance to see Steve, GO for it!!! i recored the show, and it was just wonderful! he will also be playing with his Band the Rugburns in Jan, down in San Diego. If they hadn't the majority of people on this list would never have heard of her, especially those of us in Europe. She'd probably still be playing coffee houses in San Diego. She'd never have got MTV/VH1 exposure or appeared on Letterman or Leno etc. Up to now they've let Jewel release uncommercial records and I expect they'll now want to generate some profit from her after spending millions promoting her. Hopefully they'll release the first Jewel pop record, so all the world will be able to enjoy Jewel's fabulous voice. Wow. I haven't written for a long time because I was in exams... but now I've finished and my summer holidays have just started (...mmm... I'm from the southern hemisphere by the way...). I loved Jewel appearance on Rosie today. I almost missed it. I thought it was going to be aired at arounf 4 or 5 o'clock. I swore myself I wouldn't miss this show, because I've missed a lot of Jewel shows recently, but, lucky enough, a friend called me at 10.30 and told me Jewel was going to sing. I couldn't believe it! Fortunately, I GOT TO TAPE THE SHOW! Jewel looked lovely and sang beautifully... this one was one of my favourite Jewel appearances. I like the way Rosie interviews Jewel... she's not like Leno or anyone of those... she knows about Jewel and you can tell they are friends! Rosie's shows is so amusing. That Michael guy was very funny... is he on this list? Well, maybe he is not a Jewel fan, but I figured maybe he was on the show to see Jewel... anyway... I'm so excited about the next CD. Do you think Jewel will consider any of the songs from the recordings of Bearsville? Wouldn't that be nice? I don't know about you guys, but I have a good feeling about this CD, she seems so much relaxed and confident than when Spirit came out. I WANT ANGELFOOD? DOES ANYONE HAVE, OR COULD ANYONE GIVE A VIDEO TAPE WITH JEWEL'S VIDEO CLIPS (WWSYS, YWMFM, FOOLISH GAMES, HANDS, DOWN SO LONG, JUPITER, WISIT) OR WITH MOST OF THEM... ALSO... DOES ANYONE HAVE THE JEWEL FANATIC AND THE JEWEL: BEHIND THE MUSIC? IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE, PLEASE CONTACT ME SO THAT WE CAN MAKE AN EXCHANGE! See you angels, Mirko *the peruvian angel* Yahoo!
