Well, as far as underrated artists go, I feel that (besides Jewel) Sarah McLachlan is extremely underrated. She is a brilliant song writer, she has an amazingly gorgeous voice, she is a talented musician, and she is a wonderful woman all around. HELLO! She "founded" the Lillith Fair! She's amazing! And, it saddens me to see her wonderful work and enormous accomplishments go unrecognized and unnoticed. Well I was wondering why we couldn't say the N-word. You know, the word that starts in N and ends with apster. Or am I just being confused here unnecessarily (I spelled the word correctly!)? Because, we can talk incessantly how Juel asked if she and Ty wanted to you-know-what, but we can't write or say or whatever this certain word. Oh yeah, hi. Whatever. Have a good day. (fiona, sarah m, harry connick, letters to cleo..etc) but i think they are a lot like jewel..and artists like Phish who although they are not commercial, they do have A LOT of support from MANY fans. I know that Phish was at one point the website with the most visitors..they do not get their recognition on the radio.. but they get it while touring. They tour alll over all the time and have tremendous turn out at their shows. I think it is people like us (the EDAs) who keep these underrated bands alive. Also, it seems to me like when these artist to get played on the radio.. it is never the best work they have. Dave Matthews Band, for example has soo many awesome songs, and the radio only plays Crash, Stay, Under The Table and Dreaming, Ants Marching, Satellite, and i heard Crush once. He has tons of better work. WE just have to keep appreciating these artists..and let bands like NSYNC and Christina, Britney, BSB rule the radio and commercial market. kat *the sarcastic angel* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 12:54:22 -0600 From: "ERIC W LEVENCHUCK" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: How come we can't say _that_ word? Hi Angels, Eric is not the only one who has had posts blocked because they mentioned politics, though some political posts have got through on occasions. Mike has explained to me that the main taboos are religion and politics because they can cause major fights on the list - -- passions can run very hot on these subjects because they are so integral to each person's being. For those who are only interested in Jewel as a pop singer and musician and have no real interest in her lyrics or her books I can see that arguments over religion and politics would be boring and a real put-off. Further, as we have seen in recent times, fights on the list can degenerate into childish name-calling. So I appreciate Mike's point of view and acknowledge his right as the list-owner not to forward certain posts. But this is really unfortunate because both religion and politics are integral to any discussion of Jewel's writing and thinking. She is a religious (in the widest sense) person and a political one as well. Her recent endorsement of Gore and her encouraging young people to get involved in politics show that clearly. I would strongly endorse Jewel's encouragement of young people (all people) to participate in politics - -- it's vital to democracy. However, serious discussion of the religious and political aspects of Jewel's work has to be restricted to taking place off the list. I do this with very good friends from the list and we get to know Jewel, and each other, better through our discussions. So, Eric, don't be too hard on Mike. By the way, I see you're a libertarian angel. Now libertarianism is a broad church. My variety is similar to that of Kropotkin and Goldman. And one of the slogans of the libertarian students in Paris in 1968 always reminds me of Jewel. They said (translated) : Be realistic: demand the impossible! None of the radio stations around me play her, except WWSYS, YWMFM, and sometimes FG. Oh yeah... SOMETIMES they play Hands. I heard DSL a few times, LAST MAY (1999). I heard Jupiter ONCE (when they play new music at midnight, 2 songs are played, and callers choose which one is the better song, thus the winning song will get radio play, and the losing one will get shelved.) I never heard WSIT. And wasn't LU a single? or was that just a single for sale, and not for radio? Radio Stations just play that teeny bopper crap. and some R&B crap which I hate. They never play anything good anymore.... like real music (with real instruments... not electronic samples) cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Saturday, November 04, 2000 9:48 AM Subject: [EDA] NJC: Underrated Bands > Not to sound redundant (but of course I will) I agree about Fiona Apple. This means that posts that diidn't have a chance in hell of going through before (i.e. "wanna f*ck?") now get through quite easily. However, certain topics abortion religion politics are very restricted for reasons others have already expressed very well, and topics like ebay napster are FORBIDDEN for various reasons that I am not prepared at this time to explain because it would take a long time to come up with a post that would make the reasons clear. If you do not like these five basic limitations, you know where the door is.
