one of my favorite, and very underrated imho, bands is
the badlees.  they're from central pa and have been
together for over a decade.  they've released 4 cds
independently and one on atlas/a&m.  they received
some national airplay a few years ago, but lost their
record deal after the universal merger.  but they
continue to make a name for themselves through their
live shows, which are absolutely awesome.  if you're
interested, check out www.badlees.com (their sound is
similar to bands like train and edwin mccain).

Lit (Toured with No Doubt, awesome live bands)
Black Lab (Had a top forty hit - #40 for a week)
Fishbone (Been around a long time pretty big in O.C. I think)
Squirrel Nut Zippers
Violent Femmes
Rusted Root (Jewel introduced me to them)
Suicide Machines (Toured with No Doubt, very talented)
Fionna Apple (Even though everyone knows who she is, she doesn't seem to get
much recognition)
Letters to Cleo
Save Ferris
Travis (Although they are gaining popularity right now)

P.S. The Spice Girls have a new cd out, what?!

not really a band... I think that Mark Knopfler's latest album 'Sailing to
Philadelphia' is totally underrated in the US.
The album has really nice melodies and the lyrics are really nice. Of
course, it's not really something I would call 'music for young' and his
Dire Straits era is gone... Knopfler's music is not just about guitar solos.
