And some of them are from the US! Some of these are individuals, rather than bands though. Hurricane #1 (a brit-pop band... think Oasis) Rialto David Poe (love him!! he's awesome!) David Rice Mary Lou Lord (her last album, Got No Shadow was actually on a semi-major label, but still she goes un noticed) then there are some other small bands that I heard through CMJ New Music Monthly... I personally think they should get recognized: Wheat Dump (I love the song "Clarity") there were some others, but i can';t think of them right now. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus - ----- Original Message ----- From: Matthew Willcourt To: Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2000 1:08 AM Subject: [EDA] NJC: Underrated bands > A few months ago I bought the Corr new album "In Blue" which I think is > a great album. Does anyone else have favorite bands that haven't had huge >commercial success that they want others to know about? Who do you think >are underrated artists? > > I think that a lot of Canadian bands dont really get that much play, because we have to first make it in Canada, then start completely over in the USA. For example. The Barenaked Ladies. They were in Canada for 10 years before they even started in teh stated. I remember going to one of their concerts when i was 9, im now 18. Another Canadian Band, that not too many people are knowing about are the Tragically Hip. They are an amazing band.. but they dont get any states play. There is this website i have been checking out called www.garageband.com and it has a competition for new bands to get a $250,000 dollar recording contract. and it doesnt matter where they are from.. its a good expirience for them because their song gets put on there, and people listen to it in a competition against another band of the same genre, and they move there way up in the rankings through this method. Its completely up to the listeners who gets the recording contract, and you cant specifically listen to one band over and over to get them to win. This is a really good idea. its a good way to get unknown up into the mainstream. Jess angel with broken wings who wants everyone to hear of GREAT BIG SEA cause they are a really really good Canadian East Coast band. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. How is everyone doing? I just got CDTD in the mail yesterday and it's beautiful! I was so careful with it, like a prized possession. =) I have only read about 3 stories, but they are very descriptive, interesting, and they give me a view into her personal life. It's very good, I believe. I got it right before I had to go to work; I thought about calling in sick! It's very addicting. From all the stories I've read so far, she is homesick. She talks of home alot! I want to sing and play guitar like her, but I hope that I don't become famous. Ya know? It would be just too hard to be away from a warm place like home. Plus, I'm kinda feelin her when she says that she would rather be out in the vast country than in a crowded city. I grew up in the suburbs, but I have always wanted to grow up on a farm and live off the land. Today while watching VH1 Before They Were Rock Stars Home Video, Jewel appeared on my screen. It was great. She was I guess auditioning for a record deal, but before she did, she slapped her ass and started sponsering some drink in her hand. You all should look out for it. It's pretty funny. I'm sure they'll play it over again. Now, I have a question for everyone. Does anyone have guitar tabs for Need A Piece Of Your Love Machine? I'm infatuated with that song...it's great. Anyway, I thought you all should know. Have a lovely day! I used to go to a local radio station's "Party In The Park" and they would be there all the time, so I had their CD years before my friends did. Also, remember "All Saints?" They were huge in Canada, where they are from I think, or England, but anyway, my dad went to Canada for a business trip, and got the CD for me, and then almost a year later, I heard their song on the radio.
