Short and sweet post ....... Simply, my computer crashed Thursday morning and I JUST got it back up and running this evening. There were 1,300 emails waiting for me, and I have to go through most of them. (Many are "behind the scenes" administrative emails dealing with this list) As to why some of your posts have not gone through, many unmoderated lists like this one have some form of control, and many of those use filters/taboos as the control devices. If a submitted post hits one of the taboos, it bounces for approval. About 33 posts sent in since Thursday morning bounced to me for approval, and of course I just now have gotten to them. So, unless a post of yours violates one of the reasons for it hitting a certain taboo, it should be getting sent on somewhat soon. Sorry for any inconvenience. I lose track of time, i only know time in relation to Santa Claus day and Easter Bunny day, y'know. First off, i think it's been abundantly established that the majority of the readers and writers of this post, silent or otherwise, are ANTI-AGGRESSION. Wonderful. After reading about five or six posts EVERY SINGLE DIGEST i'd say this is a pretty much given fact. No more needless pounding this into the brain, thank you. As was said, let us move on and speak of other topics, and presume that if you're not part of the fight, you're more than likely against it, or at least indifferent, which i'm sure will cause you to be held in high regard amongst our civilized angels. In other words, please cease with the somewhat tiresome solicitation of your self-pronounced pacifism, we get the picture. The other junk i have to spew is in relation to some other posts i read. For instance, Jessica Parks' little soliloquoy, which i thought was great. <> I just wanna say i think that's entirely too cool. I know if i was a filmmaker i would love to hear that said about my creation. That's how movies SHOULD make you feel, dammit! Speaking of that particular film, i've heard nothing but positive comments about it (although i'm a little skeptical because the whole concept was oozing CHEESE). I have to say that Almost Famous gave me the same sensations though. <> That's what this list, this ideal, is all about, man: intelligent optimism. Hopes. Go for it. And no, a well-crafted film doesn't NEED to "manipulate" anyone, because a well crafted film only directs you, only points out to you that you do indeed yearn for something of substance. A film that has to "trick" you into liking it isn't well crafted, it's well produced, and there's an obvious difference. I don't think a film has the power to trick you into being so profoundly affected as you seemed to have been, that has to be something real. > Some Non-AngelFood for thought. > > Top 10 best selling albums of all time (as of OCT2000) > > 1.) They had talent, style, tightness, and (well Eagles not so much) super duper originality. Michael Jackson and Fleetwood Mac, while not quite being the amazing artists the above mentioned were, were still intelligent and original. AC/DC is a highly influential and, within its genre, unique band. As for the rest (Billy Joel, Shania Twain, Whitney Houston, Alanis Morrissette), modest talent backed by heavy heavy rotation, promotion and hype, coupled with simple-minded accessibility. Blah. Oh yeah, not to mention these guys are in the top ten as opposed to BRAND NEW Brittney Spears, Nsync and whomever else because they've had, some of them at least, DECADES to rack up sales. Musical greatness, IMHO, is the ability to stay true to oneself and yet be interchangeable... to start a vibe or a feeling and be able to sustain it throughout an entire music career. Few bands can do that now, which has been true of all periods of time, but there are some out there. Radiohead is the first example i can think of. Jewel is as well, actually, but she's still a little fresh for me to say for sure. And finally, damn... <> Hehe... it's "calling people names and picking fights IS wrong" i believe... <> This i do believe is a good suggestion. I'm all for establishing a policy along these lines. Good thinking. And god knows that to us, the true fans, she will always be-the one and only-Jewel." guess who wrote this beautiful description on the 21st of july, 1996? it followed one of the most beautiful well-written letters i have ever read. and, hinting of what was to come: "Hopefully she doesn't become popular and her next album, though I'm sure it will be even more radio-friendly than Pieces of You(which was basically not at all except for WWSYS, not that it was a sell out song or anything), does not sell with really big numbers, because this is how I will remember Jewel, this is the way should be seen, the venue and audience respect will never be like that again if gets big and famous. Here's a quick way to put a cup of food in a fellow human being's mouth each and every day at no cost to you, other than the time it takes to click on a few web site buttons! Just go to: http://www.thehungersite.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/HungerSite ...and click on the "Donate Free Food/Click Here" link. And yes, it is legitimate. Corporate sponsors donate funds daily to the effort based on how many web users register a "hit" on the link. The program also rewards recipient education and work effort, and has resulted in as much as 3 million pounds of food being distributed in a single month. Read some of the statistics while you are there as they are pretty sobering (ie, every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger... 75% of them are children). If you are so inclined, please bookmark the page, and make it a habit to click it once a day while you're casually surfing the web (repeat clicks don't count, unfortunately). If half of the EDAs on the Jewel list did so, it would result in a thousand cups of food a day getting to hungry people. If you send silly jokes and chain letters to your friends' email accounts, you might as well send them this useful web site link, too. Thanks for the listen, and what must seem like an obsession with the "hunger thing". I promise I'll post something lighter soon. I'm really not that serious of a person. Honestly, I'm not. That's a GREAT idea! Last winter out in Southern California, Jason Vierling coordinated an EDAF project he called "Project Warmth", where local musicians played a Living Room Concert for EDA blanket and coat donations, which were then distributed to folks needing them. Every day, there are many people in "at risk" situations who need food, clothing and shelter to survive. While each of us can't necessarily save the world, we can make one hell of a difference in a single person's life -- and it can usually be accomplished with a pretty simple gesture. *** Kris wrote: >I think this is a great idea, I think some EDA's have forgotten that they >are EVERYDAY ANGELS! > Anyhoo, I live in Mass now and I was wondering if the EDA's here are >thinking about doing a food pantry x-mas thing. As I live in southern Massachusetts, I plan on calling the foodbank affiliates of Boston, Worcester and Providence and seeing what their needs are for December. There are quite a few EDAs in this area, and I'm sure we'll do at least one or two volunteer Saturdays, and have an EDA gathering as part of the day. Ditto for southern California and the NY/NJ area. I've also heard from a Chicago area EDA, and of course our Texas EDAs Luna and Rowdy... come to think of it, Luna and Rowdy were out there helping the EDAF at Jewel's concert food drives sponsored by "Rock and Wrap It Up" and Ms. Kilcher last summer. :-) *** Barry from Australia wrote: >Dennis has come up with a very good idea when he said we should be >channelling good intentions and energies through the EDAF and "doing >something a bit more personal that might produce more immediate, >measureable results". Then come to a >decision about what we'll do for Jewel to finish of the century/ >millennium. Actually Barry, I'm sure there are hungry folks in Australia, and many volunteering opportunities there as well. In our "everyday acts of kindness" project, Australian EDAs were very well represented in a variety of activities! I personally know of one Aussie EDA who has expressed an interest in seeing even more of an EDAF presence in your fair country, and is willing to help kickstart it if there are enough EDAs downunder who feel the same way... The primary reason I advocate hands-on help more than donating money is that it personally involves the individual, and gives them the opportunity to learn a little, meet other people and enrich their own life though the experience. I do both donations and volunteer work, but find the hands-on part of it much more satisfying. Insofar as EDAs donating to Clearwater again this year, the EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF) strongly endorses Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH) and the Clearwater Project. In fact, half of the proceeds from last fall's SLAMFEST Connecticut concert to benefit the EDAF were donated directly to HGH in a show of support. The foodbank volunteer project is happening, we just need to know who wants to be involved. I'd like to see EDAs from all over the world working together on this. I think it would make a wonderful statement, and expand our EDA community beyond the confines of the internet yet again. The key thing is to do SOMETHING, and enjoy doing it! :-) Dennis Harris ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #368 ***************************
