While reading about her in Jewel's book I began to wonder if this was who "Face of Love" was written about. Then when I read that she was suffering from cancer I thought that was probably the case. Shadows Play even sounds to me a bit like "Bossa nova" (I just love Brazilian music) - and Serve The Ego is quite exotic and has great lyrics. Jewel masters a great voice which adapts itself to whichever type of music she decides to perform. I can't wait for her next album! I have 30 or so different shows on cassette (audio) of Jewel, dating back from 3-96 to last summer! Most of them are REALLY good quality! I also took pictures of her when I was at Storytellers that I am willing to trade and i have different videos and cds (woodstock '99, bits & baubles, etc.) If there is ANYONE looking for something, just email me and i will see if i have it. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading everyone's details about Jewel's readings at Narnes and Bobels on Saturday! It sounds like everyone had a really good time! See, I told you that Jewel is kewl! Hopefully she'll come by this way soon and do a reading! But even though I couldn't go, I had a really good time at my friend's Barmittsfah! We had so much fun! All ya'll should go to one someday! I just had myself the best time! AND I got to kiss a boy for the first time! He was really cute! And he was really shy, but his lips were really soft! It made me feel SO happy to kiss him. I wonder if Jewel felt the same way the first time she kissed a boy?!? She should write a poem or song or short story about that! Shouldn't she?!? I think so. Well everyone, see you! Hi Angels, I really enjoyed Cymbie's post, and agreed with what was said. I haven't heard "Shadows Play" -- we don't get the show Jewel sang it on here in Australia -- but I did see her sing "Serve the Ego" on Letterman. It's certainly not "new-age". I'll take Cymbie's word on "Shadows Play" as being jazz. Jazz is a really great form of music -- my favorite form actually -- and Jewel is, I think, a great, natural jazz singer. I just wish she sang more jazz and blues. She certainly has been stereotyped as a "folky" and that's a great pity, because it diminishes her talent. She said once that she didn't do much jazz and blues because she couldn't play jazz guitar, so she limited herself to what she could play herself. But now she doesn't have to limit herself; she's free to really experiment and develop herself to her full potential. And as Morgan said: "I think they["Serve the Ego and Shadows Play] are totally awesome... if this is considered 'Jewel going in a new direction' then I guess I'll be following right along with her...". Jewel said in an interview in New Zealand last year that she hoped her fans would follow along with her in whatever direction she takes and I'll be with Morgan and others doing just that.
