Hi all, Firstly can I ask on Letterman did Jewel just sing or did she also do some reading from CDTD? I only ask because sometimes in Australia Letterman is edited and last night it kinda looked like it was. Jewel didnt look trashy. She look classy and sexy. For crying out loud she is a beautiful women do we want her to come out in a pair of daggy trackies with her hair looking like a horse has just mistaken it for a budle of hay and taken a chomp out of it? Aye. The song was ok. I thought that during the chorus the back up singer sorta drowned jewel out but it was nice to hear something new. There have been a lot of jewel performances and sightings lately with her promoting her book and all. Its great to see her back. Will anyone be posting any photo's either from the TV or some photo's they have taken themselves from her recent appearances? It would be nice to see some....anyways, stay safe Jeremy. **The Scorpion Angel** ICQ# 4287279 _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 05:57:52 EDT From: ZoeMonroe@aol.com Subject: [EDA] I missed the Early Show! =( Hi guys, I was wondering if someone would be able to send me the Early Show appearance for a trade.. Jewel loves irony and this one is loaded with it. Not picking up on the irony has often meant people misunderstand Jewel and her sense of humour: I'm sure there will be those who see this song as urging women to be subservient to the great male ego, as the Bible teaches. Of course, she means the very opposite. This song also works on multiple levels. This is something I have noticed Jewel experimenting with more over the past couple of years: the beginning of "Hands", "Do You" (another song loaded with irony), "Stephenville" (there's irony there too) and now "Serve the Ego". At one level it's a song about relationships and women's attitude to men- don't be subservient to the man, don't just satisfy his pleasure, don't be what you think he wants you to be. This is a pretty common theme in Jewel's songs and it makes me think that Jewel herself has a great deal of difficulty in her own life taking this advice: maybe it's a constant struggle she has against an inclination to be dependent and to want to please her man. But then she has to tell herself, "Everything's temporary given enough time" (Stephenville) and he'll soon be "yesterday's lover". This really saddens me - and may explain the sad look she so often has in her pictures/posters - as it makes it very hard for her to find the lasting happiness of a stable relationship that I feel she seeks. I'll be interested to read "Chasing Down the Dawn" to see if this theme appears. So the song offers general advice but has a personal side as well. Then there is the more philosophical level: don't serve the ego, don't be subservient to selfishness, cast off the ego as "yesterday's lover". This is another common thread in Jewel's writing and, of course, is a common theme of most religious, ethical and philosophical traditions, but one which needs reiterating in our society where we are subject to constant brainwashing through the commercial media that that greed is good, selfishness is a virtue. Selfishness is, in fact, the root of all evil. So, I think "Serving the Ego" is a really great new song. It's musically experimental for Jewel too, but then she's always experimenting. And I thought she looked great, though the guitar didn't really go with the beautiful dress. She may have been better to just sing without the guitar. How she looks is, I think, integral to the total performance and, therefore, a proper topic of discussion. I'm sure Jewel dresses for effect when she's performing. Remember the very short mini-skirt she wore singing "Hands" on one TV show? Was she making a statement that you can be sexy and spiritual at the same time? I think so. So, i have some sad news and some even saddder news but i can't decide which is which. Last week my "jewel rocks the paradice" tape passed away. I was cleaning my car and had not noticed that my cousin put the tape in my arm rest ... when i stuck the vacuum in to get the dirt out i noticed tape quickly flying into the vacuum i tried to stop it as best i could i must have fought with the vacuum for at least 10 mins before i finally got the sence to turn off the vacuum .. it was too late.. my cousin though it was hilarious ...first my face when i realized what tape was being murdered and then my desprate struggle with the vacuum... i'm sure my neighbours liked it too. We had a funeral service but i just couln't bare to go .. i didn't wan't to see the tape in that condition. The nightmares are only comming everyother night now and i can finally leave the house ... once in a while.. and only for short periods of time. The other sad news is that i missed jewel on everything this week because it was bithday and my graduation on the 6th and my cousins bithday on the 4th (not the same cousin who aided in the death of my tape)i can see letterman on my tv stations but i was at a gradution party with my friends and there was no one left to tape it for me (we should have a "designated taper" who has to stay home all the time and tape stuff...) The things on the amrican stations i usually get taped by my friend Dee, but we were getting ready for graduation and weren't able to do it. The good news is i have already seen break me preformed and yes it is amazing. well, take care guys and always remember ... never stick the vacuum places you haven't investigated first. p.s i haven't gotten the new book yet but my cousin (yes the murderer) plans on getting it for me tuesday as a late birthday girt. ttfn shawna "faith's angel" _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hi Angels! I can't believe I missed TWO EXCELLENT SHOWS AND TWO NEW SONGS!!! I've been so busy in exams that I haven't had the chance to check my calendar. But now that I am on vacations, I will certainly not miss Jewel on Jay Leno! BTW: it is posted in jeweljk.com's calendar! As I've missed these shows, is anyone willing to trade Angelfood... As in late November I finish my exams, I've decided to buil up my collection considerably. However, it will be able to do it only from late November. Anyone interested? I have been hiding for a while.... but I was looking at the Late Show site... all it could tell me about the track Jewel played, was that its title is "Serve The Ego". After searching on a few websites I have come to the conclusion that the track is an original and this was confirmed by the latest Jewel Link newsletter. As for the Jewel's attire during the said performance: Since the song alluded to Disco's and the like... she was wearing a dress reminiscent of the 70's disco era... look at "saturday night fever" or recent films like "54" or "boogie nights" and i am sure you would agree.... my verdict though: AWESOME! bye for now Phil. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 23:18:14 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] recent shows I didn't know Jewel performed on the View. I just saw her 6 minute interview, then they thanked her, etc, etc., so I thought that was it and stopped taping. I also didn't get her interview on the Daily Show. I also missed her on CBS this morning. So, if anyone has all 3 of these appearances in their entirety on a good quality tape, with a good copy, could you please e-mail me? As for the Letterman show, I thought it was ok. But I agree with Sean in that it made no sense at all to promote her book, AND the year old Christmas CD (before Halloween!), then to have Jewel play a song, not on the CD, and that had nothing to do with her book. I didn't "get it" either. She needs to fire her marketing person though. That's about all I can suggest. Jewel is so amazing and i've never imagined stories more than I did hers. I just finished her boo, obviously. My favorite was definitley the one about Jacque.. her best friend.. for whom im guessing she wrote "Violet Eyes." If you haven't read that story yet it is on page 113--read it. I cried like my mom was dying. You all have to get it. I payed $24.56 for it, although most people got it cheaper.. it is so worth it.. geez! She also had a quote in the book from the brand new song "Serve The Ego".. the tut tut, yesterdays lover.. and i also saw Where does love go when it cant find a home in her book. anyway, great read.. amzing imagery.. love it! katie *the theater angel* :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 00:45:18 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Serve the Ego and Shadows Play Hello I have high quality MP3 versions of both Serve the Ego and Shadows Play.
