Cause I never used to see stuff quite like that. I think he always supported free speech and tried not edit anything unless it was completely necasarry. However there was that one post a few months ago, where a guy was talking about how like him and Jewel were ..(I dont know how to put it cause I dont remember exactly) But it boiled down to being one with the cosmos and soulmates type stuff. So it was over the top and was edited out. If I remember correctly, when I joined it said the list was moderated, and Mike was the list moderator. If he's not moderating it anymore I respect his decision, but I think someone needs to moderate it. I can't speak for Amanda Ghost, as I'm not familiar with her music... but I am passingly familiar with Sarah Harmer (http://www.sarahharmer.com), as she played a house concert at my place with Sarah Slean (http://www.sarahslean.com) & Leslie Feist (http://listentofeist.com) a few months back. All three were VERY cool, and I'd highly recommend checking all of them out. That was the first time I had heard Sarah Harmer, and she was really great. Hard to characterize her music, but I'd class it as country-tinged folk-rock, if that helps. :) As for her songs, I'd recommend "Basement Apartment", or "Around The Corner," if you want to hear her more rock-flavored stuff... "Trouble In The Fields" (originally done by Nanci Griffith, I believe) or "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" (I'm pretty sure this one's originally a "traditional" gospel number) will give you a pretty good idea of her country-ish stuff... and "Uniform Grey" or "You Were Here" are more folky. Other artists worth checking out: Sarah Slean http://www.sarahslean.com Mentioned her already, but she's worth a re-mention. Best description I can think of is, "Tori Amos-ish." Stunningly good. If you can find a copy of them anywhere, check out her song "Last Year's War," "Sweet Ones," or "Duncan" -- they're not on either of her 2 cd's, as they're reasonably new, but fantastic songs all the same. Tory Cassis http://www.torycassis.com Saw him play last January with Sarah Slean @ MIT... very good show... for the most part, kind of "broody" music, but quite good. My personal favorites "It Never Hurts to Ask," "As The Days Are Long," and "Things I would Say." Richard Shindell http://www.richardshindell.com One of the best "story-teller" songwriters I've ever come across. Very nice, James-Taylor-ish voice. Anyway. Check them out, they're worth looking at. It was broadcast on the show "Austin City Limits". It was an hour long, but it was a real treat since I'd never seen any of her live performances before (and probably will have a very difficult time ever seeing her in concert). Did anyone else catch this concert? How recently was it taped? And could someone please e-mail me (offlist) the names of the songs she sang? I own Pieces of You and Spirit, but there were several songs I did not recognize. Midway through the show she did a duet with Steve Poltz I believe, and they harmonized quite well. EDA's, Hello everyone. Oh man.....the concert last night was UNBELIEVABLE. I can't even describe how awesome it was, I was soooo close! (some of my pictures are from like 3 feet away...hehe). She played a few songs that I didn't expect her to.........she ended up playing Violet Eyes, Stephensville, and this other new one I didn't recognize.......but Jewel said they were "all new stuff", and she also said it was the 2nd time she's ever played them in public! So it was awesome. My only complaint is that I was too slow in getting my ANWA book out when she asked for it........i was so closed i could have handed it to her....but some other lady got it first. Oh well. This was the greatest thing I've ever been to!! I wish I would have gotten there earlier for the EDA gathering......but what I thought would take me 20 minutes to get to the Puyallup, it took me an hour and a half! It was a dead stop on the freeway! Well, when I get my pictures developed, i'll post em somewhere! -John *the angel who loves the new jewel poster* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 19:48:07 +0200 From: "michiel van gorkum" Subject: [EDA] I will think of the european fans not going to America hello Jewelfans, Only a couple of hours ahead for me and than i am flying to America to see Jewel. As a matter of fact I think it was the best concert I’ve seen her do. She came out singing “summer time” from Porgy & Bess then went into some of her standards finishing up the first part of the concert with acoustic Violet eyes, Stephensville and a poem. When the band rejoined her she “nailed” A Life Uncommon. I mean she had us on out feet shouting and clapping and that was just the beginning. Jewel kept the momentum going with one high-energy song after another clear through to the end of the concert! The crowd was really into it and she was obviously enjoying it too. Well I could go on and on but I’m just plum worn out, we drove back up to Portland and didn’t get home till 3:30 (would have been home sooner but we had to go on that “sling shot” ride).
