I am writing to beg you for a prayer. My younger sister Candice, who is a huge Jewel fan, is seriously ill and really needs help, which the state's social services department is failing to provide her with. Candice, who is now 23, was born with cerebral palsy and has never been able to walk, read, or write. She has always made the best of it, attending a day program with other folks like her and trying to find joy in things like music. Up until a few months ago, she could crawl all over the house and keep herself entertained, she could come out to my shows with my mom to hear me sing, she could go to the mall with her day program, and she could live pretty peacefully. But a few months ago she stopped moving. She just fell over while crawling one day and said she was too weak. She's always had excellent stamina despite her disabilities, and knew something was drastically wrong. Since then her condition has progressed and she is now paralyzed on her entire left side. Last week we found out that on top of all the struggles she'd been given to deal with, she has contracted Lyme Disease. The doctors think it is in the advanced stages and the damages may be permanent. Now she sits home all day, every day. The van that used to pick her up for her day program is not equipped with a wheelchair lift and since she can no longer climb into the van, she can no longer go. We've been trying for two months to get a wheelchair equipped van, but the social worker either tells us we're still on the waiting list or doesn't return our calls for weeks. The state funded caretakers that the disabled are granted as governmental benefits are no where to be found and my mother stays home and cares for her all day, then goes to the office 'til all hours of the night after my dad gets home. I live pretty far, but go over and see her as much as I can. Unfortunately, I think my mom is losing her faith. She's been caring for her like a baby for 23 years and now this. Today when I got there my mom said the social worker still won't return her calls, and she started to cry and wouldn't stop. Now my sister's crying, too. She has medicine, which is supposed to work eventually, but in the meanwhile the only thing that has worked is music. Jewel is her favorite artist, of course, and "Jewel Unplugged" is her favorite CD. She especially likes the duets with Jewel's dad and Steve Poltz. Angels, those of you who already know me know how much my sister means to me. I am devastated by her condition and am deeply worried about my mother's health now, too. It seems like nobody wants to help us and nobody understands. Sometimes I wonder if those social workers know how it feels to have to carry a 100 lb. girl back and forth from the bathroom to the couch all day and try to convince her that someday soon her life will be better than this. I wonder if these social workers know how it feels to be poor, living in a trailer, and having to pay $12 an hour just to get someone to care for your disabled child so you can run to the grocery store. If they can't help us, I don't know who will. In the meantime I ask for your prayers. And if anyone would be kind enough to send some kind favors (letters, Jewel tapes, stickers, whatever) to my sister, it would make her day. Life on the couch for three months can be devastating for a girl who can't read or watch television. Please send words of encouragement or care packages to: Candice Bellany 36 Melody Road Plainville, MA 02762 Thank you for your love and your prayers, Christie Leigh Bellany ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 22:42:34 -0400 (EDT) From: AngelStandinBy@webtv.net (*~!AnastasiA!~*) Subject: * jewel smokes? - -hi angels- i have a question that ive been puzzled on for the past few days: in *daddy*, she goes *and i smoke like a chiney* so does she really smoke or is she talkin about someone else because i remember the thing with the purple lollipop and she said she didnt smoke but i was just wondering on this... - -thanks- - -AnastasiA - --The confussed and depressed angeL-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 07:23:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Quattrini Subject: * NJC: Mailbox filtering of list messages Just curious... I'd like to filter all of the posts from the Jewel mailing list into their own folder. I figured I could just put an asterix in the "begins with" subject filter (in Yahoo mail), but as I found out, this just makes every message I get that starts with anything get put in there. How do you guys (and gals) have your filters set up (if you do)? And is there any possibility that we could get the Jewel List designation character changed to something else that would filter better, or would it just be too much hassle? No, "Daddy" is a fictional story Jewel wrote after seeing how racist her neighbors' father was.. Just like it's not really from her point of view about her father, she doesn't really smoke.. Please remember that when an artist or a writer uses the word "I" it's usually incorrect to make the assumption that they are speaking of themselves. Also, Jewel has noted many times that most of her songs are NOT autobiographical in nature. I believe (although this is purely from memory and I may be wrong) that Daddy was written for childhood friends of Jewel's whose father wouldn't let them watch The Jeffersons because they couldn't watch black people on television. Jewel found that absurd and I suppose wrote a song about a controlling, hypocritcical and racist father. You don't have to wait for me to send it, and I don't think that there's anything wrong with it. Go to my link: http://www.chickpages.com/treehuggers/blueguitar/ on the left side there is a drop-down menu and under the heading "Jewel" you will see a mini heading that says "Theme" just go to that link and download it from there. Please e-mail me if there are problems or for comments. It is the only Jewel theme that I know of that strictly uses angelfood for its sound clips.
