(Thank you Jenni) Jenni and Matzzy both made excelent points, which I would like to expound upon a little. In my oppinion, Ang Lee does a superb job of making long boring books into long boring movies that are well done. (Remember The Ice Storm) Watch for how he uses the medium of film to tell the story in a way only film can do. (Listen to the music adding to drama, the size of what's in a camera shot, the regularity of switching views in action sceens, and keep in mind that it is all very deliberate.) If you are wondering exactly why Ang Lee even chose to make this story into a movie, I suggest going to the official website, where he has written what he was trying to capture. (I'd suggest going by links through www.jeweljk.com, most combinations of www.ridewiththedevil.com will bring you to porn sites.) List Moderator Added Note - the films' OFFICIAL web site is at: http://www.ride-with-the-devil.com Don't get me wrong. I was dissapointed overall. With all of Jewel's talk about how she didn't want to take an easy/predictable romantic comedy role, I don't think she chose a real chanllenging one. She was cast well however, she really fits the part. I'm glad she didn't actually get nekkid, but the supposedly 'tastefully done' breastfeeding sceen seemed more gratuitous than anything to me. The line "have you ever bedded a woman," probably wasn't meant to be funny, but it made me laugh pretty hard. Anyway, I bought the DVD. If I had to find a weekness about Jewel, it would be her more recent music videos. WSIT started out with that cool shot of her with that owl. And then it gets very lame. Pretty much as bad as jupiter. I liked the Neruda influence on the song, but there is a reason that poetry is the chosen medium for it, it loses it's essence when you try to make it visual. (Though I could see how it would be a tempting challenge to try as a filmmaker.) Thanks for reading, and I mean no offence to anyone's oppinions thus far stated. :) Charles. The sullen, pensive angel. And please don't think of me as 'not a real Jewel fan' just because I don't like her music videos. A: She doesn't write, design sets, or film the videos, and B: I'm a freeky big Jewel fan, I promise you. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 12:43:09 -0400 From: "Alex MacPhee" Subject: * Re: Stand And Be Counted Hi, well, I recorded this program- not because jewel was on it, hell I only knew she was on because I switched over just as she started talking- but because of the subject matter. IMO, this is something that we should all watch. It gives us a good perspective on what's going on in the world, and at the same time, you get to see great musicians performing. Of course, who am I to tell you what to watch? But would it do you any harm to set aside some time to learn about this topic and be grateful that you aren't in the position of the less fortunate? So, you would only have to watch for 2 more hours then! One thing I was surprised about was that they didn't show more of Rage Against the Machine, or talk to them. I mean, when I think of musicians politcally and socially active in society, the first person that comes to mind is Rage. I also expected to see more of Jewel. At first, after I saw her perform, I thought that would be all they showed of her altogether, but then they showed Tracy Chapman again, and she had already been on at the beginning, so it might be beneficial to keep an eye out. I ended up just taping the part where Jewel was on, because I didn't have four hours of tape to spare, and I missed the beginning the second time anyways. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, August 22, 2000 12:07 AM Subject: * Stand And Be Counted > hi y'all, > i saw the show tonight and they showed jewel singing at FarmAid. it was > not even a minute total. i was just wondering, is that all that they are > showing of jewel? like that one time? cuz that's what i'm thinking and i > don't want to sit through the whole 4 hours ... thanks > > ~elizabeth ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 15:11:57 -0700 From: "Sandy" Subject: * Has Jewel Inspired You? Hey Everyone; I got hitched on to an idea that Chuck/Charles had a while ago about making a website about how Jewel has inspired us, and others. I thought it was a great idea, so when the person who had volunteered to do the html/programming before was unable to, I volunteered to do it. Right now, the site is under construction, and in order for it to actually BE a site about how Jewel has inspired us, I need your help! If anyone has a story they would like to share of how Jewel has inspired them, to help out at a homeless shelter, or to donate time and money, or anything at all, any writing (poetry, stories, songs, anything that you feel Jewel inspired you to write!), voice clips of songs welcome also, anything at all that she has inspired in you, please, PLEASE, submit them to me, so I can share it on the page! I really need input here, otherwise, this isin't going to work. This is a really good chance for you to let others know how Jewel inspired you. Even if it's only so much as hearing one of her songs, that inspired you to treat someone kindly, or becoming an EDA! Let me know the way Jewel makes you feel, and how she helps you to be a better person. This is a real plea here, please submit! Feel free to attach pictures, or song files as I mentioned, anything that helps others to understand what Jewel has done for you! As soon as I get enough submissions, and finish the page, I'll let you know where you can see it :) Once again, I can't say this enough, PLEASE submit. If Jewel has ever inspired you, this is a way to pay her back, by letting everyone know, and inspiring others by your story! Thanks again, and oh, did I mention PLEASE?!?!?!?! ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 21:24:15 +0200 From: "michiel - the dutch jewelfan - van gorkum" Subject: * Fans going to the Jewel concert in Saratoga Hello jewelfans, Are there any american eda's living in CA going to see Jewel in Concert in Saratoga ? On August 8th, when Gore announced Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, Jewel was on hand to sing "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant For Me." "I believe in the Gore campaign and what it stands for," she says. "And I like to encourage kids to get involved in the democratic process." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 17:09:29 EDT From: "Devin Starr" Subject: * stick around.. were not done yet how can angels be anything but positive.. i mean.. look at me.. broken wings and i still carry my smile. people will come, people will go. time marches on, and we will carry it with us. and as for those who signed on for one song.. it started with one song, give them a reason to stick around.. give them break me, give them boy needs a bike, give them i hate valentines day and last dance rodeo.. people surprize you when you let them. Hey Angels, we all know how much Jewel does for our planet and it's people, and now we might be able to help her get the recognition she deserves for it! VH1 is doing a My VH1 Music Awards, where fans pick the categories and nominees. I am in the Jewel fan club, and so I entered the category "Most Underappreciated Artist" and entered Jewel's name. If a lot of EDAs do this, they would have to seriously consider this, don't you think? Here is the link to the webpage: My Music Awards: VH1.com Let's do this!
