Hi everyone, I have two questions. First why doesn't anyone ever mention the rap band that Jewel was in called Le Creme? Are there any existing recordings for this? I'd love to hear it. Also I was just thinking about how at some concerts you can get special recorders tickets and they let you bring equipment for recording good quality shows. I was just wondering if Jewel's management has ever concidered this. Obviously Jewel Is not opposed to the recording and trading of her live shows. It's just a shame that the onlyu recordings we can get are made on a little hand recorder. Just a thought... By the way, don't forget to check for my post in a little less than two weeks when I'll be listing all the branches for the Rare Jewels tape tree. Jodi The Rare Jewel Mining Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 22:27:35 EDT From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: * Jewel: Political Puppet? Since when did Jewel become a card-holding member of the Democratic party? Performing at Gore's announcement of his running mate? Is this the same person who, at Jewelstock, spoke of being rather uninterested in the voting process and whom, though she has her own agenda somewhere I'm sure, never came across to me as someone who followed politics in any sort of partisan way. Yeah, she covered the convention for MTV last time but that was more as an impartial voice of the media. I am curious if this appearance is just her using it for attention, or if she has been manipulated(as usual) by those surrounding her(Atlantic, the "J Team," etcetera) who have political ties to the Gore campaign and/or the Democratic party. Just something I'm throwing out there to see what people think. In my opinion, it's not that big of a deal. It's just that if she's gonna support someone it should be because she knows and respects their policies and not because those around her have a political agenda and are telling her that it is "good for her" to associate with such people. I've commented on Jewel being a pawn in the past, my apologies if I'm being repetitive, I'd just really like to know. Is she a strong, independent, business-savvy young woman; or just a pretty girl with a little talent who has had the right people push her career along? Later, Sean Hooks Expose, explore, and explain. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 02:15:14 EDT From: "Shana Ward" Subject: * Starbucks Hi angels...... hope that you are all doing well. I was in Starbucks yesterday, when "Life Uncommon" comes on loud and clear, as I'm waiting in line for my cafe' mocha =) I asked the guy working there if that was a cd that they were playing, wondering if it was one of those only made to play in stores or if it was Spirit. He said that it was a compilation of artists with similar music, but that it was only made for them to play in Starbucks. However, he did say that it might become available to the public and sold there. So, I was kind of curious to see if any of you work at Starbucks and if so, do you know anything about this? Thanks.... ~Shana (the undecided angel) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 00:16:21 -0700 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: * Re: democrat? Maybe someone in San Diego county can check voter registration. >most artists are neutral about politics.. [there's Jewel content here, read on...] Please justify that sweeping generalization; you're pretty far from the truth. Numerous artists are politically active. Now, we'll ignore the rest of the world here, just for your sake, and talk US politics. A group called "rock the vote" has made noise in recent elections; they encouraged young people to go out and vote. [1] It features the words of poltically active artists Wyclef Jean and Sting. David Silveria of Korn is a republican. [2] Sting and Bono received awards for their political activism. [3] So did Neil Young and Wyclef Jean. [4] Emm Gryner supports the Free Tibet campaign. [5] According to TurnLeft [6], dozens are artists have "left-leaning" lyrics and Dave Mustaine (the original lead guitarist for Metallica) was MTV's representative to the 1992 Democratic Party Convention. The pages also describes Jimmy Buffet as "a flaming democrat." Don't forget the abortion-rights-supporting Rock For Choice [7, 8, 10] whose supporters include L7, Nirvana, Hole, Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Then there's Rock For Life [9] and its list of bands [11] I don't know. They list Jewel as being "pro-abortion." One can't forget Artists Against Racism [12]. They list Bush, The Barenaked Ladies, the Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young and dozens more [13]. So, in conclusion, most artists are not neutral about politics. As many of you know, Jewel descends from a long line of talented singers and songwriters. The Kilcher family has always been one filled with original music. Many of you who caught Jewel's performance on VH1's "Hard Rock Live" several years ago also caught a rare glimpse into Jewel's early years, when she brought her dad Atz Kilcher up on stage and they performed together on a humorous favorite of Jewel's called "Yo." Over the years, many have asked if Atz Kilcher's recordings were available and if so, where best to get them. Well, we are very happy to add Atz Kilcher's first solo album, "You Are What You Are" and his brand new CD, "Spirit Filled Air" to the JMerch online catalogue, now making it much easier to find and enjoy his recordings. Personally, being one who enjoys following the "influence path" of favorite musicians, I've been interested in and have enjoyed various Kilcher Family recordings for several years. One of the things that makes Jewel so unique is the fact that early on, she was strongly influenced by the music of family; more so than popular music of the time. Atz Kilcher's new CD has been on heavy rotation here lately, but rather than express my enjoyment, here's what others have to say about Atz Kilcher's two solo albums: "Spirit Filled Air" Thirteen songs considered the very best of Atz Kilcher's songwriting and performing. Even for those familiar with it, the style is very difficult to describe. Think of a camp fire in a beautiful valley. Think of friends singing and telling stories. Close your eyes and think of love and intimacy. See the horses grazing beneath cottonwood trees, and hear the breeze through the leaves. Feel the air, heavy with the spirits of all those who have traveled this valley and sat around many evening fires. The Fox River runs silently by. The coyotes cry to the night. You are snug in your sleeping bag on soft saddle blankets in an old cabin. You might hear violin or fiddle, soft strains of mandolin and piano from the next valley. The bass you hear may only be the pulse of the waves on the not-so-distant beaches. You will feel the drumming of hoofbeats. Most clearly shining through will be the voice and guitar of Atz Kilcher, as he sings his stories of love, life and land. Most strongly your will feel the spirit-filled air that is giving shape to this stretch of the trail that Atz is journeying on. We say it is a unique Atz-Alaska style! "You Are What You Are": Atz Kilcher's first solo album was recorded in Switzerland, in the small town of Zuchville. This is where Atz's father Yule grew up. All the songs on this CD were written while he was touring Switzerland and Germany. There are songs of meeting new people, and seeing new places; songs of love and friendship; songs of reflecting back on Alaska where he was raised, and reflecting on being a dual citizen and being back in the land of his birth. "Fox River Grass," a song reflecting back on a beautiful valley where he grew up, and "Woodland Rockabye," a song about his mother teaching him music, are two of the strongest songs. Another favorite is "Not To Do What I Have Done," about a Viet Nam veteran friend committing suicide, is also a favorite which received the most air play in Alaska. It is truly a wonderfully written chapter in this Swiss/Alaskan balladeer's life. It gives you a rare glimpse into his heart and heritage. This CD has a country rock feel, containing 20 songs. Atz does lead vocals and acoustic electric guitar. His Swiss friend and producer Willie Ruefer plays all other instruments. The accordion and one Swiss dialect song give this 1996 release a nice Swiss-Alaskan country rock folk blend. Please visit our jeweljk.com website store, where you'll find both of Atz Kilcher's recordings are now available in our "CD and Video" department. For your convenience, the website store now offers several CDs by some of our previously featured guest artists, along with Jewel's album and video releases. While you educate yourself about our current guest artist Rickie Lee Jones, you may enjoy knowing that Atz Kilcher is our "on deck" guest artist. You can look forward to his feature next month. Speaking of Jewel's influences, those of you in the New York City area who are also fans of Jewel's friend, occasional collaborator (and acoustic guitarist in her band) Steve Poltz, he will be participating in a special "In Their Own Words" songwriter series at The Bottom Line in NYC tomorrow night, Friday August 12th. This series has featured an impressive list of the world's most talented songwriters and has been running very successfully for many years now. I've been to several of them and they always have four (usually very diverse) songwriters participate in each one. Usually, the way it works is that the host asks interesting questions and the artists take turns answering them and performing a song that relates to the question. It rotates between the four guests throughout the show, with each taking turns playing songs and answering questions. Occasionally, unusual collaborations happen and the interview and songwriting dialogue aspects of these shows can be really fascinating. (I went to one years ago that featured John Cale of Velvet Underground fame, Joan Baez, Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes and Natalie Merchant. Quite a strange combination, but very engaging!) These "In Their Own Words" shows usually last approximately 2 hours and there is both an early and late show. While they won't be typical marathon Steve shows, it should be extremely interesting to anyone interested in various approaches to the songwriting process. The other three songwriters tomorrow night are Robbie Fulks, Don Dixon and Marti Jones. Doors open at 6:00 PM for the 7:30 Show and 10:00 PM for the 10:30 Show. The Bottom Line is located on 15 West 4th Street, on the corner of West 4th and Mercer in NYC. You can call the box office at (212) 228-6300 or buy tickets at the club, which is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 11:00 PM. Quite a bit is going on at the moment, so we may send you additional communications over the next few days.
