I almost couldn't wait till the end of the show to come and share this with everyone! Jewel (a cartoon version of course) was on Spy Groove (the New Mtv cartoon) tonight! She was on at the very begining. this Episode took place in Las Vegas, and Jewel was performing as part of the "Zigfred and Roy" act. An annoucner announced her, and she appeared in a large cage wearing a lavender shirt and black pants, and a guitar. They had her yodeling. Then they place a tigar in the cage beside her and covered the entire cage. The the curtain was raised, "Wow Jewel Completely disappeared!". There was a little bit of lavender cloth hanging out of the tiger's mouth. Moments later the show changed locations to back stage, We find that it wasn't Jewel at all, a military person wearing Jewel suit! It was very groovy baby,...Spy groovy! have a good night! So i was wondering, what is everyone else's take on this song? I just read in a magazine, (my boyfriends maxim, mind you) something that would concern this whole venus/shell deal. Although it may have been in a less than desired article, it pointed out something I thought was quite interesting: Oysters The word aphrodisiac comes from Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love, who emerged from the sea in an oyster shell. (then it goes on to talk about how oysters are aphrodisiacs, named so partly because of the oyster shell-emersion of Aphrodite, and apparently they boost testosterone levels, and a single one supplies one days worth of zinc!) Someone said it was Venus who emerged in a shell, and although this magazine may not be the most reputible source, I do believe it was Aphrodite, and not Venus. Although I realize their relation, expecially regarding the statue, it would be a different matter in this case. Anyways, when she talks about venus demilo in her half baked shell, I think she is referring to the painting, and possibly just mixed the name's up. (It is possible for her to make a tiny mistake) I'm not so sure she meant to combine the two, but then again I could be wrong. I think this is a question that only Jewel could answer. Please, do not get offended and argue with me about my comment regarding her mixing them up. I would like to avoid persecution for my opinion, like I said, I'm willing to believe I could be wrong, so you don't need to prove it to me, it's just a thought :) I get things like that mixed up all the time! This "statement of facts" is totally wrong. The reality is that much of the book is written about experiences from last year's tour and her current perceptions here in the year 2000. The true fact is that Jewel finished her manuscript less than three weeks ago. Sorry it's not in stores quite yet. ;-) More info on book status in the next JeweLink. Guide Rating ***** One for the Library **** Watch More Than Once *** A Satisfying Rental ** At Your Own Risk * Better You Should View A Test Pattern Ride with the Devil **** (four stars out of 5) Period drama; staring Tobey Maguire, Jewel, and Jeffrey Wright; directed by Ang Lee (Universal Studios Home Video) After an extremely limited release and a miserable ad campaign by Universal, which made the movie look like a Jewel video, 'Ride' took in less than a million dollars. But Lee's study of Cival War-era moral ambiguity was an unseen gem. The story-- filmed in an epic style that recalls John Ford -- follows Maguire as a Missouri teen who joins a band of southern guerrillas known as Bushwhackers. Maguire's charecter struggles to come of age in a country that is itself in a period of adolescence. - -A.L. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 16:42:05 EDT From: "Joshua Wolf" Subject: * Re: Aphrodite Hi everyone... And those times chatting to Letterman > and Leno must be so tiring. Perhaps she should have > stuck with waitressing. > > Do all Americans seem to have such a distorted view of reality?>>> > *** I just had to reply...... Jewel is not a high-energy superhuman that can pop straight out of a tour and hand you a new album; sheesh between dabbling in movies, writing and touring, she's already doing far *more* than the average performer. 90 shows may not seem like a lot to you, but I'm *sure* all of that travelling was exhausting-- i'm sure that would get to anyone, regardless of whether they are age 25, age 60, or 12. What's *wrong* with wanting a little rest and relaxation these days? is that such a crime? Personally I would rather Jewel take some time to herself to rejuvinate before getting into another album. Why rush the creative process? Normal day to day Americans (the ones you clam have a distorted reality) look forward to annual vacations, right? So why should "Millionaire Jewel " (who, by the way, donates 40% of her earnings to charity) , be any different? Just because she's in the public light, she shouldn't have the need to just get away for a bit and take a rest? She's given you a Christmas album *just* half a year ago, and her book will be out soon..how much more do you want? Don't expect someone to be superhuman just because they're a celebrity. She has the same needs and wants as us, and I bet even you get tired of everything once in a while and just need some time to yourself. You can't assume that a 25 yr old shouldn't be feeling the weight of a tour, how many world tours have you been on, that qualifies you to decide it's not enough to burn a person out? And talking to Letterman may not seem like much to you, but all of that moving around and not being grounded in one place for a while, must take it's toll on a person. Everyone needs a little down time, probably even you. 'Give me another album now, forget about your rejuvination time' seems like a very selfish message to be sending out... Sorry for the response, I'm just annoyed with the fixation on "why isn't jewel giving me a new album" *whine*.... Seriously, when *she* is ready to give you one, she will.... she knows what she needs better than anyone else, obviously. Do you think she'd like to read all of this stuff about how people are upset that she's taking time to herself? She'd likely feel rushed to write songs, and that would definately show in terms of quality.. and she'd feel like people didn't appreciate everything she *has* given us. This wasn't meant to be rude, and please don't take offence (I come in *peace* , I swear..hehe), but to just make blanket statements like americans have a distorted reality, is way off base. Go on a world tour, dabble in film and writing, and then you have a basis to say whether or not jewel should be tired. I'm done (finally).. sorry to clutter the list with this stuff , but it just gets me frustrated. I say we all hug and make up and focus on the *music* Lori ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #217 ***************************
