I was driving down the street with my Ex boyfriend, and I believe it was Foolish Games that came on the radio (maybe it was YWMFM) at either rate, i had listened to her before, and I most likely had her CD, but it was 4 or so years ago, and i dont have a great memory. and i was sort of... whispering as I was singing with the song. and every word she said was so.. clear... and i looked at him and said "She has such a crystal sound... she even puts her T's on the ends of words perfectly. " H ekinds laughed, since that didnt mean squat to him... he just thought she was hot. HAHA anyway, ever since then i have been a fan of jewel and her music. So, back to the SUBJECT Back in Aug, at the CIncinnati Spirit TOur Concert, i was curious as to how many EDA;s were there. At the time I was not an EDA, although , that night is when i subscribed :o) But there was a couple, sitting behind me, roughly the 13th row from stage, and they were talking about Jewel, Steve, and a lot of other things about Jewel, that was a tiny bit mor personal than any average jewel fan would know. (ex: someone who owns one cd, and just enjoys her music) but the lady offered to go down to the front of the stage, and take some pictures, and stuff for me, which is how i got some good photos. And we chatted quite a bit. Anyway, i was wondering if either one of them were EDA's and if so, could you email me privately? thanks guys, night ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 01:28:39 EDT From: PENNY16161@aol.com Subject: * Covers Hey. Is there a list out there that has all the songs that Jewel has covered over the years, whether it be live or in the studio (if there has been any studio covers - other than songs off of Joy)? Mr. BB? Anyone? Let me know. Thanks a lot in advance. First off I just want to say that the angel in need is in my prayers as hopefully in everyone elses. I think it's great that everyone is pulling together and praying for an eda in need. Hope everything is going well. Second, I don't know, this is kind of a weird question/comment. anyways, people have lately been telling me that when jewel got started, that whole homeless, van, eating carrots and peanut butter was all a big cry for fame. I don't know, I thought I knew everything about it, but they were challeging me and putting anti-jewel thoughts in my head. Ahhhh, help me out, could someone please explain this to me. Thanx guys, Patti (the angel who needs some explaining!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 15:46:43 +1100 From: Dung Nguyen Subject: * What's with the lyrics Many EDA's on this site ask for lyrics and i'm not really sure why. When i listen to any song i'm usually singing it in the next few days and usually get the words wrong, but i don't really care . I remember singing WWSYS one day to myself and a close friend corrected me and provided me with the right lyrics. Even though he had the best intentions, i feel it's important for us to interpret each song to our own definitions. This is a basic philosophy behind Mazzy Star who don't provide lyric sheets and encourage their fans to sing their songs however they like. I feel many EDA's here are pretty much lazy (no offense). Is it not more worthwhile to listen to a song and transcribe it yourself? You get much more satisfaction and anyway other EDA's interpretations are not always correct. In the end only money matters (JEWEL - Hands) PS. i know it's meant to be kindness but i feel this more appropriate in our money hungry world. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 10:40:22 EDT From: KNicky3116@aol.com Subject: * Re: What's with the lyrics In a message dated 7/5/00 4:18:41 AM Eastern Daylight Time, dtnguyen@alphalink.com.au writes: << I feel many EDA's here are pretty much lazy (no offense). I mean, there's nothing wrong with providing your own meaning for the song, but how can one do so if he or she has all the words wrong? And why/how is wanting to know lyrics lazy? - -Nicole angel on horseback http://www.fumblergal.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 07:28:51 EDT From: "Devin Starr" Subject: * Re: What's with the lyrics An EDA Wrote: ******************************************************************* >Many EDA's on this site ask for lyrics and i'm not really sure why. The yesterday I was listening to the album "Pretty Hate Machine" by NIN. Then as it finished, the cd player, being a multidisc player, promply switched discs and all of a sudden..."Joy to the World" came blaring out of the speakers. I was knocked backwards by the irony of the situation and then remembered that I had been playing Jewel's Christmas cd the other day. Once back into reality I proceed to play the full Christmas cd. Viva Christmas in July! I just can't get over it! I find it so funny to go from NIN "Pretty Hate Machine" to Jewel Christmas! Okay, I must admit that I haven't yet had the opprotunity to see Jewel in concert. Thus, I have yet to see Steve Poltz in concert, Thus I am very unfamliar with his music. However after viewing ACL and hearing the song "I thought I saw You" I would be very interested in possibly buying some of his material. I searched Cdnow and was able to find that they have the album One Left Shoe. They had it there for $10.98. I was wondering if this is his only album, and if this is a good price for it. And if it is readily avilable off-line in regular music stores. If anyone has any advice for me, let me know! thank you and have a very angelic day! Sara the Angel with a paintbrush. - --- I tried to forget you but you tied bells to your name ~Jewel "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" http://homepages.go.com/~mysteriousraven/door.html List Moderator Note: newer subscribers to this list may not realize this, but Steve Poltz is an integral part of Jewel music, both creatively and in performance. He took Jewel under his wing when she was just starting, has co-written many of her songs (including You Were Meant For Me) and has toured with her as an opening act (solo and with his former band, The Rugburns) and a member of Jewel's band on the recent Spirit tour. Posts about Steve, while in most cases are NJC (No Jewel Content), from this point on will be allowed, as long as they are about his music and/or his professional relationship with Jewel, and as long as it does not get out of hand. - Mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 14:11:06 EDT From: ZinzyGurl@aol.com Subject: * Re: What's with the lyrics Okay, that was pretty rude to call most EDAs lazy. Maybe the reason the lyrics are asked for is to put it in a collection (I have a whole book with the lyrics of Jewel's songs and poetry inlaid into my artwork), or for performance. A person can still draw their own meaning from a song even when singing the correct words. Don't you think that by changing the word "kindness" to "money" you defeat Jewel's whole purpose of the song? I mean, look at the whole song, she is mainly saying that money doesn't matter, and material possessions don't matter ("poverty stole your golden shoes, but it didn't steal your laughter"). I know for a fact that just because I want the lyrics to her songs that I am not lazy. I volunteer with the physically and developmentally handicapped population, I babysit free of charge for single mothers in poor areas so they can go to work and earn money for their children. So I take it quite offensively that you would call EDAs lazy, when every single one of us is a WONDERFUL person who helps their fellow people and environment, just like Jewel. It's based in New Orleans this time. Well, out of all the new cast members, there is one that goes by the name of Julie. I think you guys should really check her out, because on the first episode, she was playing guitar and singing just like Jewel! I was like,"whoa, she must be influenced like Jewel". And another thing, regarding The Real World, on Entertainment Weekly's web site, when they were stating facts about the cast members, on Julie, they said,"Most Annoying Habit:That whole Jewel-like guitar playing". I thought that was kinda funny. One of the three most popular questions asked by EDA's to Lenedra in Jewel Link (which is cool by the way) was when/if she would be releasing any of these tracks. I guess my main question is WHY? The greatness of having these songs available to us through the generosity and savvy of Jewel and the dedication of EDA's and the angelfoodbank.org is that we get to hear Jewel prior to her being produced for the masses. At her richest period of song writing to date. You know, a lot of people take Jewel completely the wrong way. I liked her music before - but now she is one of my favourite artists. Why? Because I heard the genius in POY which was further compounded with these unreleased tracks. Do we really want absolute jewels (pun intended) such as Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone and Sometimes it be that way and Carnivore and Life's A Great Big Mystery Show and Chime Bells etc etc etc. to be re-released and most probably be under appreciated just to give the hardcore fans one more thing to collect. Or is it so that Jewel can make more money. Or to give Jewel another dimension to people who more then likely wouldn't well, for lack of a better expression, get it. We all know Jewel's irreverent and versatile nature - it's right there in those songs. But if other people don't realise, well I don't particularly care. They miss out don't they? That said, I have had the opportunity to expose some friends and family to Jewel's unreleased recordings. And you know what? They LOVE IT! None can suppress a giggle at the pure sass of My Own Private God's Gift to Women, or the sadness of 1000 Miles Away, or the cuteness of Cold Song, the sheer vocal delight that is Too Darn Hot, Chime Bells "She makes yodelling sound cool". I could go on all day. Perhaps this last comment suggests that Jewel should churn out these songs for the masses. But to me, it's so pleasurable to stumble on things of worth ($$ or otherwise) that I wasn't expecting. I like surprises & Jewel sure was a good one!! I believe that Jewel should return her focus to writing and performing with honesty (Sounds like she's getting back to this with Stevensville & Violet Eyes - where can I get MP3 or RA's of these files? Can anyone help me out?) What makes many of her songs so great is the humanness, her perceptions of people, emotions that she conveys that we are all experiencing all over the world on a daily basis, love gone wrong, love that's right etc. etc. Fire Patrick Leonard & get Poltzie to produce it! I liked Spirit, but found it rather lacking in integrity. It was produced far too much to serve a public that makes squillionaires out of Aqua, Britney & NSYNC and unfortunately the goodness of her lyrics sounded a little.... well... trite. Sorry guys, but I think many of you agree.... Sean Hooks WHERE ARE YOU? Anyway, something to think about. I must say that it helps that I have my angelfood on CD, in terms of sound quality & ease (tapes are getting to be dinosaurs really). Someone said that putting Angelfood on CD is missing the point of Angelfood, but my question is how? Buy yourself a burner or if that's out of the question get someone to burn them for you. At this point I will offer to make CD's for anyone who does not have access to a burner for the price of their postage and handling. I do live in Australia though.... So may not be the cheapest price for postage. Dani ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #208 ***************************
