A few points to add to Mike's recent reply to the above post: 1) WE haven't sunk to any depth, although obviously SOMEONE has. Don't judge ALL of us on the (lack of) merits of one person. 2) Hate mail (and hate crimes) exist because someone is insecure, and they feel that they must focus hatred toward something to validate themself. It is sad and far too common, but all we can do is deal with it, try to NOT reward those who utilize it to gain attention, and consider how we can help these misguided souls into expressing their cries for validation in a more acceptable (and less destructive) manner. If anyone feels like acting like a total sh*t on this list, get in touch with me. I will try to get your skinny butt over to the annual Bearsville campout next month, where five dozen EDAs will undoubtedly gently attempt to enlighten you and get your tin halo back on straight... 3) No one should BRAG about the random acts of kindness they commit, and when they do commit these deeds they should preferrably do them in THEIR OWN NAME (I do believe that Jewel's is already taken ;-) 4) TERRIFY angels, yes (I've been happily doing it since 1996 ;-)... but to the point of being afraid to express opinions? No, to the point of HAVING opinions, and CARING enough to speak up about them. 5) What is going on here? Well, I've personally seen a community built, and have made hundreds of friends over the years. And while a lot of the original neighbors have moved on and I haven't actively posted like I used to, I've kept an eye this list. Frankly, the content is largely depressing. It's not that they are bad posts, just that they are mediocre posts with little substance or inspiration. This is one music fan discussion list that should transcend the usual celebrity blather -- if not, please drop the "everyday angels" moniker, because the concept of those words is far too important to trivialize with celebrity worship and thoughtless use! I'd like to see more discussion of what personality traits and aspirations attracted us to Jewel (and where we are individually headed), and less about the trivial stuff that is often deleted before it is read, and if it is read, will certainly be forgotten by the next day (if the reader bothers to finish it). Historically, what has seperated this list from the rest of Jewel's admirers is the depth of our purpose, not our neediness and fanaticism. I strongly suspect Jewel would be perfectly happy to NEVER be hounded or told "I'm your biggest fan" again. She has inspired the majority of the people on this list, so return the favor to her! Show Jewel that you get the philosophy behind her art by elevating yourselves and living your lives to their fullest potential. As I understand it, that is the primary goal of Nedra and Jewel's Higher Ground for Humanity effort. Don't make the mistake of fixating on the DESTINATION (ie, Jewel -- whether it is meeting her, or accumulating enough peripheral "stuff" to feel a connection to her). Celebrate the JOURNEY, where your interest in Jewel has serendipidiously brought you down a path where you find yourself with very special traveling partners. You are surrounded by some of the best potential friends you could possibly imagine, please don't pass up the opportunity! By the way, enjoying the journey and not obsessing on the destination works well as a general metaphor for life, too... :-) That said, someone PLEASE inspire me with some thoughtful posts, filled with humor, insight and/or intelligent controversy. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 04:16:37 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Re: women's clothing at Jeweljk Lavender Hazed Angel asked: >I am thinking about purchasing one of those ITSUS shirts from JewelJK.com. >Does anyone know how long the sleeves are on those, esp. the >sunburst/mango one? thanks. As per beemers request, a fresh controversial which many may find associable to their mindset, perhaps it shall spark understanding from the more bigoted or intolerant members. At what line is devotion made obsession? I have followed Jewel on tour, much to the chargrin and enjoyment of the involved parties i hope. I hitchhiked when i could not afford bussing and made money selling poetry, i know this is how she would have preferred it, yet in giving my time to what i consider a more than worthy cause, sharing stories of travels, various viewpoints particular to region (gee the bible belt is so interesting in a repetive sort of way,) And made many friends whom I hope remember me fondly, I must wonder. By graces of charm I got in to meet Jewel my first show, and, in finding her as I anticipated having the greatest heart I have ever known, resolved to spread the wisdom inherent in her words in all my travels. You see, I also believe it is beautiful to worship someone you love, and the best way of worship is to sing thier heartsong (obscure pun intended.) So I ask, though I move foward in life with fufillments based in knowing of her, taking my movements in extremity to be in her presence as far as concerts go, am I obsessed? I hope to see her homestead, it would be a pilgrimage to me, as well as her house, both from as far as she wishes it. Never could I bear to know she was without comforts in my presence...What I call devotion, another calls obsessive, though I have a full life, made diverse in many forms of philosophy and general intellectuality, is having more than one autograph obsessive? I suppose it is in the eye of the beholder, so behold me then, and tell me if this term so oft used harshly applys. Ok,like a YEAR ago I was tired and watched Jewel on TV (I think maybe it was the CMA's) and I couldn't remember seeing her look quite so voluptious. I NEVER said she did not look good, she looked beautiful. It was just an observation. And in the places she was voluptious it looked like maybe she could have been in the very early stages of pregnancy. Maybe she just put on weight, maybe I just never looked close enough. Whatever,it doesnt matter if she did. It wouldnt matter if she was pregnant,in fact I think it'd be outright beautiful. But I'm sick of being thought of as like a villan cause of that post a YEAR ago! people totally misunderstood that.I've already apoligized but just to make everyone happy "I'm sorry". I have a ton to go through still but I saw a few with Bearsville in it. If someone could fill me in, I'd like to go this year(This will be the 3rd time I've tried to go...3rd time's a charm!). Problems I see are: lack of my transportation and lack of camping gear. If someone sees ways around this, that's fine...Otherwise hehe :) I can(and have) slept on the bare ground before(if I'm tired enough)(it's just not my idea of a Holiday inn). About the transportation though, I thought Tom Miles did Angel needs a ride last year or the year before. If you're still on the list(or are someone who knows this answer), Is Tom still doing it? hehe :) I guess that would be it. I do need also the dates, times, etc. I'm sorry to bug you when chances are it's in my email but I am like 300 to go yet. Thank you very much! Take cares and Have a Great Day!! :o) Seth D. I am happy to report that I am almost finished with the rarities tape. I am waiting for Violet Eyes and Stephenville (both are in the mail), and then I will begin compiling. I expect to begin the tape tree within two weeks. Thanks so much to everyone who has helped me so far. You will be hearing from me soon. I would like to include the dates of each song so I need your help on a few of them. Does anyone know when the Exhale show was recorded? What about Austin City Limits (I know it was sometime in February). When was the show for Radio Shack recorded? Finally, does anyone know when Jewel sang I Shall Be Released with Bob Dylan or 6th Avenue Heartache with the Wallflowers? If know any of these dates, please email me privately. Thanks again for everyone who has helped make this compilation possible. Be watching for my posts and I will let everyone know how they can get a copy.
