MARK: I like that Jewel song--you know the video Jewel where is walking through some house on fire? I get all choked up whenever I hear that song. I bought the CD and brought it in to play, and they totally laughed at me. I totally back that song. I think it's a good song. ALSO... Jewel is in Teen Magazine TWICE! For a while Austin City Limits & Sessions @ West 54th had been taken off the national satellite feed for reasons I still don't understand. Thankfully, they are again back! It was a great show and I of course loved hearing the new Stephenville and Break Me in superb quality. Boy I sure do hope Oxygen replays that episode with Jewel later in the summer as well. I'd like to see that. Break Me is definetly my new Jewel song! It's one of those that you always have with ya, you know? Way to go Jewel and I love her new internet list. Even when there aren't huge Jewel happenings there is still reasons to celebrate! Hope everyone enjoyed Austin! :-) Nite! Very obvious spoilers, including Stephenville lyrics and all the dialogue.. I was worried.. Was this going to suck? I thought about how long Jewel had been out of the spotlight, and thought that might have hurt her.. But it turned out to be the exact opposite; Jewel's little time out has so tremendously improved her that sometimes I wish she's pull a Celine Dion and take a two-year hiatus...but not really. What I just saw was a happy woman, genuinely happy, unlike the times she had the flu and still was under obligation to endlessly promote her Christmas album or the times where she had to sing the exact same songs on the exact same late-night shows to a stiff audience who really didn't care.. Her voice was great (check out those Janis Joplin-esque screams, they've improved greatly since she started), she looked serene, and there was just a great vibe. I remembered why I love Jewel so much, and, not too sound too horribly corny, it's like she says in Stephenville: 'I'm 25 years old.. It ain't the end, but it sure ain't where I began'... Let's start at the beginning Jewel's wearing a simple black outfit, looking very comfy indeed.. She starts playing the guitar for Stephenville and talks to the crowd.. "Hello you guys.. If y'all haven't heard, I was raised by wolves in the Alaskan wilderness, and then I was crucified in a van, for which the press will never let me forget.. [laughter] ..but it has been really, really, really, really, really really weird to get famous.. I mean, it's a weird trip, right? I mean, it's hard to imagine.. I never thought it would happen to me.. And it's a weird thing to deal with.. I've had kind of a hard time with it.. I mean, I guess it's hard for anybody.. [puts on a fake "survivor" voice] but I'm doing pretty good.. I just keep doing heroin everyday and I don't think about it.. [laughter] [fake New Age trendy voice] ..no, but it's been really hard, I've been meditating a lot to handle it and I'm taking an extended trip to India and I'm going to quit eating meat .....[normal voice again] So I've been living in Texas for awhile here [loud applause from crowd and Jewel laughs] If I mention like your local football team will you freak out? [raises arms] Texas, whoo! It's been great, [playfully] I mean I never thought like being in Alaska I would live in Texas, because we're so much bigger we're so much bigger than your state [big laughs -- some "hey!" reactions].. *Jewel starts into Stephenville, a nice acoustic rambling autobiograpical-type song* Housewives trying to recapture their youth by wearing floral print and suede Fixing their hairdos with PC, chemical-free hairspray Martha Stewart taught them to make on TV I was raised a farmgirl I'm too far from home, all alone on the road Trying to figure out who I am now the the stardust has turned to sand And the sand has turned to stone on the starmaking machine I'm 25 years old That ain't the end but it sure ain't where I began And my daddy, he wrote songs and he broke colts[?] And he went back to school to get a degree Now he teached music to kids, he taught music to me And this Alaskan girl was living in Stephenville, Texas Yes, you guess it, I moved here because I fell in love with a man And I moved his ex-old lady's things out of the closet The same closet I had to move my things back in It didn't make me feel that great, as if to demonstrate Everything's temporary given enough time But hey, I've got nothing to lose I'm a singer for crowds, I'm a writer of songs Hey Mom, look, I'm an entertainer I'm a modern day troubadour trying to find justice with six strings Trying to make the world make sense out of me Trying to be loved completely, trying to love honestly Trying to find a decent high noon cup of tea In another shitty hotel I'm trying to listen to the leaves speak Trying to steal secrets from fishes in the creek Trying to figure out who I am A singer, a pretty bad cook, maybe a good mom What will it be? And I'm 25 years old That ain't the end but it sure ain't where I began I'm trying to figure out who I am But there's no hand to hold, no Doctor Martin Luther King There's just syncophants And the mindlessness on TV or in the magazines On the latest ways to behave So why not follow me, the blond bombshell deity? I'll sell you neat ideas without big words And a little bit of cleavage to help wash it all down Hey everybody thought ? was a clown And that ain't gonna be me And I'm 25 years old That ain't the end but it sure ain't where I began And I'm 25 years old That ain't the end but it sure ain't where I began Guess that just means I'm in Texas And then she played.. Break Me Sometimes It Be That Way "I'd like to invite my band out.." (w/ band) Hands Deep Water "So this is sorta the first time I've had a band.. I traveled solo forever.. And uh, let's see, you guys know Steve Poltz? [clapping] Well, know you do.. [to Steve] You wanna play another song we wrote together, besides You Were Meant For Me?" [Steve] "Okay, how about 'I Thought I Saw You'?" [Jewel nods] (w/ Steve) I Thought I Saw You (solo) You Were Meant For Me "I wrote this song for a very dear friend of mine named Jacqueline Synder who passed away about a year ago.. [to Doug] Go ahead.." (w/ band) Life Uncommon (very moving performance!) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone (got to LOVE those throat screams!) Who Will Save Your Soul (gets better every time she tweaks it) "Thanks you, have a good night.. Thank you.." [Jewel exits, song ends, cuts to part of a Jewel interview conducted by ACL while credits are rolling] "I love singing acoustic in front of an audience that's quiet like that, it's probably one of my favorite things.. But, I mean, the chance to be able to get up there and rock and lay your groove on is really, really, fun, but it doesn't feel like two personalities or anything.." [cut] "Um, I was a big fan of Ella Fitzgerald when I was a kid.. Yeah, I used to do a scat yodel when I was a kid.. I thought I was like gonna be the first scat yodeller, but it wasn't actually that good sounding [laughs]" [cut] [scat yodels] The end! Hope you liked, it took two whole hours to transcribe.. (help needed making an adio file so all can hear it) Hey guys, Hope you all are well, I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while, my wrist has been bothering me, making it difficult to type (lol, I realized how much I go on the computer, since I haven't been able to go on :) ). But anyways I am writing to say that I tape the ACL show, which sadly :( the quality of the video came out terribly, PBS doesn't come in all the way. But the audio is fine, and I guess that's what is really important. But I was wondering, I have the capability to put the audio on the internet (like I did for Break Me) but I would like to do it, in Real Audio form, so if anyone knows how to do that, and can help me out, email me, it would be greatly appreciated. And I'm sure all the other EDAs who didn't get a chance to see ACL would appreciate it as well. Or if it is easier for one person who has the same capabilities to do it themselves, (maybe this will inspire you :) ) they can do it, I'm just trying to get something started to get "Stephenville" out onto the internet, and into EDAs ears! So contact me if you can help! :) Thanks, Juliet the new song angel P.S. Scott if you want to email me, maybe you could help me or we could do something like we did for 'break me', if you want to, but don't feel obligated :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jun 2000 17:14:42 EDT From: QTPYSK8R2@aol.com Subject: * Graduation/Jewel song hey angels~ well i did it!! i graduated high school!! at graduation i got to sing the national anthem and Angel Standing By. I also want to say how much I have enjoyed reading everyones posts for the last couple of years. I post very rarely but now that its summer, I would like to get to know everyone better. I have also spent the last couple years trying to come up with a creative angel name. im a quadriplegic so I was trying to relate it to that but unfortunately im not very creative.
