I've seen her live once, and it was one of the happiest times of my life. I was just so glad I managed to see her that one time, because it's a day I'll never forget. If I manage to see her again though, that's cool too :). The reason Jewel is concentrating on America is because that's where she sells records! In Europe, she's done two huge tours in the last 3 years, and how many albums has she sold? Not a fraction of what she's sold in the US. Maybe Jewel finds it a bit disheartening to come to Europe, get such a great reaction from the crowds (most of the time!), and then still not sell as many records as she deserves to. Jewel will come back to Europe when she's ready and I hope it's soon, but if it isn't then so be it. I know of course that the Auction benefits a good cause and i am very happy that this plan has been able by the Jewelteam. When i told the prizes were going high i only wanted to tell that i was outbidded on two items, and that was a pity as i didn't *lol* anticipated for it... As far as Cymbaline & Tom were speaking am i happy very delighted that i could see Jewel so many times last year!!!! Those concerts are still a great memory to me and i am grateful what beautiful concerts I attended and what special personal message Jewel wrote on a postcard for me. I will never forgot that. So eda's please understand that i never wanted to argue about auctions in the way i tried to tell this list.... There's always good news on this list for us!! For example the great Jewel Austin City Limits concert and the new project Alan told us about in a previous statement.. So we will see what happen in Europe in the future concerning Jewel concerts... i only hope that we will hear something..that's all! In the end we can enjoy new concerts i know for sure.. And Jewel never did Leaving on a Jet Plane either. That one was done by Chantal Kreviazuk (I know of a time where someone mistook Chantal for Jewel...weird) and I think the original song was by John Denver. So to answer your question, Jewel did not make either of those songs. Hope that helps! If you need more info on Emm, you can check out her website at http://www.emmgryner.com Here's the scoop on the show: Where: Tiverton, RI When: Thursday, August 10 What time: TBA (I think it will be later in the day/early evening since Emm has a NYC show the night before) Cost: $0.00--that's right, it's FREE but we encourage you to buy Emm's albums at the show :) I think that covers it all, but I need to tell you that space is VERY limited. My living room isn't that big, so I can only reserve so many spots. If you would like to come and you know you can make it, then please RSVP ASAP to ensure yourself a spot. Although I would love to fit everyone in my living room, I may have to turn the late RSVP-ers down if space is taken. Thanks! Peace, Cymbaline - ------ Multi-platinum selling pop star Jewel is mesmerizing in an hour-long performance of her finest folk-rock June 3, 2000, on PBS (check local listings for exact date and time). There could be something cosmic in the timing of pop sensation Jewel's debut appearance on Austin City Limits. After all, the celebrated musician and the award-winning television program both entered the new millennium celebrating a glorious 25 years of existence. Rather than unseen forces, however, it is more likely that Jewel's Austin City Limits debut is simply due to the fact that her star has risen so spectacularly - and with comet-like velocity - to rank her among the premier young artists of the day. Her road to fame is a rags-to-riches story - so fascinating it might have been hatched out of a Hollywood dream factory. While still an infant, her free-spirited parents Alz and Nedra moved her to a massive homestead in Homer, Alaska, in 1974 (the very year Willie Nelson & Family taped the Austin City Limits pilot episode). With few of the standard diversions taken for granted by most kids - no television or telephones, for starters - Jewel relied on her own creative and artistic instincts to keep life interesting. By the time she was a junior in high school, she had polished her musical and literary skills enough to earn a scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. She moved to San Diego after graduation to join her mother - by this time divorced from her father - and plunged-in earnestly to help make ends meet. But she found that working left her little time to pursue her twin passions of writing and playing music so she decided to take a bold step: quit her job and move into a '69 Volkswagen bus to be free to focus her energies entirely on songwriting. Life remained a struggle, but her faith and perseverance soon paid off when she landed a modest weekly gig at a local coffeehouse called the Innerchange. Word-of-mouth led to increasingly larger audiences and a growing buzz that eventually reached all the way to Atlantic Records. Label representatives who caught her show were blown away by her versatile voice, charming stage persona, and VW-penned songs with themes of hope and human virtue. She signed her first record contract with Atlantic shortly thereafter. Pieces of You, released in early 1995, stalled right out of the blocks. The first single "Who Will Save Your Soul?" also failed to dent the charts. Undaunted, Jewel set off on a marathon tour which saw her criss-crossing the country playing hundreds of shows in a year's time. As she gained momentum from the breakneck touring, Atlantic re-released "Who will Save Your Soul?" igniting a Jewel frenzy. The album became a smash hit, and in the words of USA Today " ... established Jewel as the reigning diva of hippie folk/rock." Pieces, consisting of songs she wrote as a teenager, would eventually climb into the ranks of the most successful debuts in history by selling in excess of 10 million copies. Before getting around to a follow-up record, Jewel published a best-selling book of poetry called A Night Without Armor, and toured as a Lilith Fair headliner. With understandably high expectations, her second album Spirit was released in 1998 to solid reviews. Of the record, that went triple-platinum two months after its release, Time wrote, "On Spirit, Jewel is once again firmly rooted in pop-folk, but her vocals are richer, and her songwriting is sharper." After her Austin City Limits debut, Jewel spoke about the pleasure of performing in such an intimate setting: "I pick my songs according to how (the crowd) is feeling. That's easier to do in a room like this where you can see people's faces. When it gets really big and you can't see people's faces, it's hard to keep the energy going. In rooms like this, I really enjoy it." The Austin City Limits audience was clearly thrilled with her choice of songs. The talented singer's set list included newer material such as the Texas-themed "Stephenville" as well as her blockbuster hits "Hands," and "Who Will Save Your Soul?" Austin City Limits is a production of KLRU/Austin, the Capital of Texas Public Telecommunications Council. Funding is provided in part by Agillion, Chevrolet, Mars Music, and The Texas Department of Economic Development Tourism Division. Additional funding is provided by public television stations and viewers. You saw, what? >11... 12 concerts of Jewel in, like a month? Isn't that enough? Most fans >would be satisfied seeing her once. Thank you Thank you Thank you. I'm so sick of the complaining on the list. Some people will never be satisfied. While I don't have the money to spend, any extra money needs to be saved for grad school, I'm happy that money is being raised for charity. And another thing, I've been a Jewel fan for almost 4 years, and I've seen Jewel 3x. 3x in 4 years. I know there are lots of fans who haven't even seen her once. I would love to be able to see her more, but school and work kind of limit the amount of traveling I can do. I guess my point is, you can't have everything you want, so be grateful for what you do have. There are lots of people who have even less. And I can say that when someone who's seen Jewel so often complains about wanting to see her more, it upsets me. I consider myself lucky that I've seen her 3 times. Fortunate that there was a Jewel concert at my school, one close to where I lived, and that a generous EDA had a contest to win his 2nd ticket to Sessions and even more fortunate that he chose to bring me. Please, let's use this list to share our thoughts and memories, and not as a forum for complaining about all that Jewel doesn't do. She's one woman, she can't be everywhere and please everyone. And I worry that when she feels like she's being pulled in hundreds of directions, everyone wanting something different form her, then she'll just stop altogether, decide that it isn't worth it. - -Kerri my homepage: We Are EveryDay Angels check out my angelfood page, there's a link from my main page "But don't wander too far, My one constant star, Darkness exists, except where you are, My feet are filled with wandering, They follow your own, 'Cause everywhere you are feels like home." -Jewel, Last Dance Rodeo ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 May 2000 16:08:47 EDT From: "Melanie Wilson" Subject: * internet show???
